Maraudeur Announce Flaschentrager

Firstly, I’d like to apologize for the lack of appropriate punctuation to our German friends in Maraudeur; we’re too cheap to pay for the WordPress bonus package! But, in terms of the incredible announcement about Flaschentrager hitting overseas in a month, I’d love to celebrate the group’s ability to sound familiar, unique, and totally like very little else out there. As much as I love covering new music, it can grow stale, but then you hit the refresh button and you hit across a group who don’t care about rules or expectations; they play with a spritely innocence, content to stutter into melody then spring right away. It’s absurdist pop music at its most brilliant, and I’m totally here for it. The LP drops via Feel It Records on November 14th.

Don’t Get Lemon Share Paid Holiday

There’s a lot of new wave revisiting over the last several decades, but very few acts are really diving back into the original blend of bold pop with electronic foundations, at least not in the way Don’t Get Lemon do! The Austin outfit begin their with a twinkling synth line, it’s got a synthetic percussive snap too, giving just enough pace to let the vocals come in and off a classic pop croon. Thrown all together, the tune blossoms into this beautiful chorus that seems fitting for a dance scene in a John Hughes movie. They take their time to let the tune move off into a mid-track excursion, which I certainly appreciate, then swing for the fences as they bring the bold pop sound home. Go back to the future with this jam!

Adults Share Flag Single

Through the first two singles from their forthcoming album, Adults have been delivering energetic pop-punk with a nod to their fellow UK friends. This new single, however, works with the vocal interplay and a bit more of a slow-burning stomp. At times, it seems like the vocals are working against each other, such is the nature of the tones; they collide eventually, providing a nice little melodic hook that reminds us of the joys of listening to their craft. Be sure to take a breath, as the band does just beyond the 2 minute mark, and wait for them to sail back in with big hooks! The Seeds We Sow Are Growing Buds Nonetheless drops on October 31st via Fika Recordings.

Thin Lear Shares My Old Friend

Matt Longo seems to have the capability to drop in on any moment of musical history with his Thin Lear project, and his newest single affirms that skillset. You’ll certainly hear a nostalgic bent on this one, sort of a post White Album affinity, taking sort of pastoral pop songs and elevating them to pop masterpieces. The studio mastery of producer Sam Cohen certainly adds some excellent moments of depth that open the song up into the modern era; you can hear faint little washes of guitar creeping as the song progresses, layering behind the light piano and acoustic strum. What a special song to kick off the day.

Gus Baldwin Drops the Pesticide Song

Through the first few singles and his album with the Sketch last year, Gus Baldwin has brought us gasoline fueled jams, bringing a garage rock sensibility with a dose of his own flair. But, the newest single from his forthcoming solo LP illustrates the artist beneath the surface; it’s a delicate bit of Casio-induced psychedelia, with the synthetic notes operating to create this dense cavern of anti-melody that stretches across the tune. Baldwin works his voice in a funhouse style, creeping around the notes with care in a way you’d expect from the ghost of Ozzy; it’s harrowing and dangerous, but dedicated to the faintest little hook. Think you’re really going to enjoy Gus’ solo record; it drops on October 24th via Permanent Teeth.

Sister Ray Davies Deliver Big Ships

If you’ve not jumped onto the Sister Ray Davies track as of yet, you’re missing out on some of the more striking gems awaiting those in the dream pop/shoegaze circles. Their latest tune has these cascading guitar lines; they rain upon the listener, drenching your ears in beautiful noise. This go round, while the disorienting beauty of noise grabbed me, it was the quiet whisper of the vocals that pulled me into the tune. At times, they are quiet and gentle, barely above a slight note, then they soar and for an instant, I thought I heard the influence of Kip Berman in there. It’s nice to see the group has more up their sleeves as we prepare to indulge in Holy Island, dropping November 14th via Sonic Cathedral.

Gran Moreno Premiere Hikuri Single

The brothers running the show in Austin’s Gran Moreno are here to continue bridging the gaps between psychedelia and mass audiences, as you’ll hear in their brand new single, “Hikuri.” This track operates with two sides of the storytelling coin, one operating with pop sensibility and hooks, while the other toys with smoky psychedelia and bombast. Initially, the toy with the listener, utilizing a catchy bluesy ballad to seduce the listener, riding on the power of the vocals, then unleashing a crashing psychedelic stomp through the speakers; they dive band and forth, back and forth, ultimately letting their primal urges take control as they embrace the fury! They’ll be dropping their El Sol LP this coming January, so keep your ears ready!

Lala Lala Signs to Sub Pop

Sub Pop has a knack for signing artists on their way up the indie rock ladder, and Lillie West’s project, Lala Lala, should be no different. Today we get news that the artist has signed on with the legendary indie label, with the first single dropping today. Akin to most of the pieces coming out lately, you get some Melina Duterte production work, working with this nostalgic groove that lets West bop and crest atop the percussive snaps going through. The tune is reflection from Lillie as she looks back on the last two years of her life living mostly out of storage and bouncing around the globe; it’s all about coming to terms with huge decisions, and it never sounded so fun.

Spiky Punk from Combobox

Portland’s Combobox are here to press refresh on all the stale post-punk we’ve got running amok as of late. They enter the fray with their own frantic, angular knife cuts, slashing and stabbing with such speed and bounce that you’ll find yourself struggling to keep up with all the ruckus. But, they do playfully adopt the fashionable spoken word phenomena, though they’re operating it in their own sort of call-and-response format, building it into something more fitting for their own sound. They break the song’s latter half down, letting the tune crawl to its explosive close. Have a blast and hit refresh!

A New Jam from Faded Cassettes

I’ve only discovered Faded Cassettes this year, but the artist has quickly slid into my constant rotation, bobbing along to the ups and downs of the quieted dreamscapes being created. This new jam is definitely a slow burn, working the same riff as the backbone; the tune opens up with some tonal changes, letting the sharpness of the notes sparkle a bit in the forefront before receding for a touch. I like the nice little backing vocals that swirl around the 2 minute mark, layering in an additional melody that highlights the continuous growth of the songwriting for the project.
