French outfit Wavepool are offering their own take on the modern shoegaze/dreampop genre, and while the lineage is clear, they bring a slightly different vibe, which I’m always appreciative of on my end. As the track begins, it comes across as one would expect, but something in the way the vocals hit just comes across completely softened, using backing vocals to create a silkier delivery. Then, what caught me was the brightness of the guitars as they shot off into the ether; they take a sunnier tone, contrasting to the genre’s penchant for walls of noise; it’s not a huge digression but one that allowed for the depth in the band’s process to rise to the surface. Trash Man Share Cool Until It’s Not

Tony Molina better watch his back, as Trash Man are sliding into that 1 minute power-pop territory; I think there’s both as long as they keep cranking out infectious earworms for us all. “Cool Until It’s Not” jumps right in with a grinding guitar swells, met my Alex Majaverian’s voice. Those vocals seem to climb the stairs along the way, tip-toeing along the melody as the song rises to meet your ears. The fade out into the refrain of “cool until it’s not” is met with some swollen keys too, buoying the hook and making sure you come back for more. This is the title track to the new Cool Until It’s Not LP, which is out this Friday via YK Records.

Dedstrange Sign Sunset Images

Today we bring you news that two of our favorite things are uniting: Mexico City and Dedstrange Records. RayRay and I love DF, and we’re really excited that the the label has picked up industrial noise makers, Sunset Images. Below you’ll find a new single, which is a remix from A Place to Bury Strangers. The drum work bites at your heels, forcing you to run through a shadowy hallway filled with reverberating riffs of noise; those moments get an emphatic punctuation from time to time, highlighting the intensity of the sound coming from the group. Their new album Oscilador will be out in January of next year, so expect more noise coming your way soon!

Right back at it after three days of Levitation, I spent last weekend out shooting Austin City Limits 2025 Weekend One. Admittedly, the lineups don’t suit our norms around here, but there are some throwbacks, a few locals and a some new names to create eye candy. After all, how can I turn down a chance to photograph Empire of the Sun?

New Jay Som Single featuring Hayley Williams

While the pop world has their Taylor Swift album, the indie world will get their equivalent this Friday when the new record from Jay Som drops. Melina Duterte has spent the past several years working in the studio, bringing other people’s crafts the special touch her ear can bring. But, as we turn to her work and latest single, it’s clear that she’s mastered the balance that makes indie folks listen into her work. This song begins in a benign fashion, sampled drum beats and a trickling guitar while the vocals embrace a bedroom pop fashion. When the live drums come into play, you can feel the craft begin to build, though Duterte holds it back, letting the listener sort of thirst for more. They’ll get that in the latter half of the tune where the heaviness is unleashed, backed by Hayley Williams joining in to lend her own vocal strengths to the Jay Som project. Belong is out this Friday via Polyvinyl Records.

A New Bee Bee Sea Single

The Italian scene is one I like to circle back to, unearthing some gems that probably skip the masses here in the States, like this new single from Bee Bee Sea. It’s a sloppy bit of frantic garage rock, the sort that would have made Thee Oh Sees really proud. The drum work gives the song this steady beat, while the guitars provide this jittery energy that shakes the tune and the listener to the core. As a band, they flirt with the song’s edge and energy, while also getting in just a bit of playfulness that makes the whole thing a joy. I’ve included the 7″ link, as the B-Side is a power pop gem you’ll want to also spend a minute or three with! It’s out now via Wild Honey Records.

Ted Bunny Share My Dear Darling

For some reason, this morning felt like it was geared especially for a swaying ballad, albeit one that falls just a little left of the dial, thus why I’m here cranking the new Ted Bunny single. At times, the group offer a soul tune for your ears, with quick little drum snaps and guitar licks playing up the energy; I think the chorus is where I found the charm. When the line “oh it feels like love” comes in, there’s a tonal switch that completely overwhelms with melody and it will crush your heart perfectly. Give the tune a listen and tell me your day didn’t start off on the right foot!

Another New Joel Cusumano Tune

When Joel Cusumano announced Waxworld, the opening single seemed like a side-step to his work in various San Francisco outfits. But, “Death-Wax Girl” feels like he’s pushing towards a bit of a broader sound, albeit one with breadcrumbs to his pop roots. The heaviness of his voice is omnipresent in this song, providing an almost melancholic melody that works in between the ethereal vocal notes that carry it from the background. While it operates in the ballad format, some of the sonics of the mix give it sort of a post-punk vibe, like if JaMC wanted to play an acoustic set in your living room…and I’m totally here for it. Waxworld is out October 24th via Dandy Boy Records.

Another Radioactivity Track

We found out recently that there’d be a new Radioactivity record on the horizon, and there’s another rush of energy to get you stoked for Time Won’t Bring Me Down. The band don’t waste any time on this single, hitting you instantly with smashing drums and a rush of guitars that refuse to let up as the song pushes through 98 seconds of furious power pop. There’s a slight chorus in the track, but the musical style doesn’t really get altered, pushing you across the finish line with a hook-laden knife’s edge rocker that’ll have you excited to hear the whole record; Time Won’t Bring Me Down is out on October 31st via Dirtnap Records.

Rusty Santos Announces Psycho Horses

You might find Rusty Santos‘ name in the lines notes of some of your favorite records, but today the producer announces his own new record, Psycho Horses. This new single is all about the approach to fleshing out a demo, or at least that’s how I hear it. The central melody and charm is created on the softened strum of guitars, but Rusty’s expertise is how to take that base and build upon it to create something special. In the vocals, there’s this cavernous effect, whether it sounds like being underwater or just a drifting note, fluttering like a helium filled balloon, it adds a textural melody that’ll soothe. You’ll even get a light bit of drum work in the dying moments too. Psycho Horses is out early next year!
