I love the approach Pynch are taking to their new album, Beautiful Noise, straddling a modern lo-fi rock mentality and a late 70s punk aura. You can hear a little bit of both on this new single, with the fuzz of distortion hanging like a curtain in the song’s background. Throughout the track, the drumming operates like a possessed metronome, keeping the pace fast and furious, letting the vocals wrap themselves around each corner with these nostalgic melodies. You can sense their yearning for answers in their songwriting, which is a theme that runs through the track and their new LP; they release Beautiful Noise via their own Chillburn Recordings on October 3rd.

Sharp Pins Release I Don’t Have the Heart

Any time that Kai Slater releases a song you better believe that everyone’s going to turn their attention towards it, and today with a new Sharp Pins track, our ears are enjoying the sweet sounds. There’s a definite leaning towards an old school garage jangle here, though he throws in some creative moments where the tune takes a little discursion, like near the 1:35 mark where he goes almost pure pop, or at least as far towards pop as Slater’s willing to go; it’s these little twists and turns that make him so unique as a songwriter, as he seems to pull from a wealth of musical allusions while building a soundscape all his own. His new effort, Balloon Balloon Balloon will be out on November 21st via K Records/Perennial.

Ghost Party Share Floating Kiss

Houstonian outfit Ghost Party have something afoot, with this being their second song in as many months. I love the Texas swagger in the song, as it’s a definite reminder of the balladry that many of us grew up enjoying with our parents. The drum work plays really lightly throughout, brushed across the gentle strum of the acoustic guitar as pianos build in a powerful texture. Softened backing vocals further the texturizing of the tune, giving an accompanying melody that lifts the tune’s spirits as the bass walks us through until the end. Looking forward to hearing if there’s a new EP or LP on the way, so we’ll keep you posted there!

Did You Hear Piggietails Self-Titled LP

I know for a fact there is at least one person in the world that comes to this site to see what we’re unearthing from the Australian scene, as we love to cover the region’s sound. Piggietails popped up on our radar a few weeks back with a single from their self-titled LP; it reminded me of the the sort of disinterested pop that was coming out of Melbourne in the mid-2010 era. Their album fulfills on all those promises, with various members taking over the role of vocalist, so while the sound might be subtle, the charms change in and out, leaving you with a lasting impression that’ll have you coming back. Personally, I’ve been digging “And I’m Alright” and its circular craft, but that’s just me! Check out Piggietails, courtesy of Spoilsport Records.

Adults Share Crying Single

If you’re in need from some good old fashioned pop punk from the UK, might we suggest you dive into this new single from Adults. After hitting us hard with “Patterns,” the group are offering a more subtle blast of rock n’ roll this time, choosing to use the power of dual vocals. Those vocals overlap, building a hook that encourages pop fans to swoon; they mix it up, working against one another as the track progresses, keeping up just enough differentiation to keep it interesting. Behind it all is this shooting distorted guitar, providing the proper edge that makes you feel alive. The Seeds We Sow Are Sprouting Buds Nonetheless is out on October 31st via Fika Recordings.

Toriyama Share Like a Dream

As you awaken today, maybe it’s hard to get out of bed and maybe its hard to rub the sleep from your eyes and maybe the outline of the world is bleak. So, settle into this Toriyama track, first thing. It’s a mellowed bit of slowcore magic, drifting carefully with this warped texture surrounding the craft as a whole; it allows for the vocal work to kind of reverberate and swallow you whole as it rings again and again. At a certain point, you’ll find yourself completely lost in the whole of the structure, circulating over and over, much in the same fashion as the tune itself.

Joel Cusumano Announces Waxworld LP

The Bay Area music scene is better because of the presence of Joel Cusumano, as he’s played in acts such as Sob Stories and R.E. Seraphin. But, he’s out on his own with his first solo LP, a record which came after Cusumano dealt with debilitating OCD. That process informed the writing process, at least in terms of the subject matter, where the record deals more with Joel’s “growing unease in a world of unrelenting flux.” Still, Joel’s not going to shy away from including hooks and fun in his music, as you can see and hear in the video below. Thumping drums and a guitar that seems to pulse with a new wave personality create a sentiment that seems almost celebratory, so we’ll jump on and cheers Joel as we await Waxworld; it’s out on October 24th via Dandy Boy Records.

Leatherette Prepare Ritmo Lento

The lead single from the new Leatherette LP is pretty special, and it’s totally all over the place in the best way; it begins with this interesting little ballad moment, like they’re channeling some sort of otherworldly ballad. Stay with them, as the track quickly blasts off into their typical fury, rushing off with a dancing guitar line that creates this sense of urgency that continuously moves in and out of the tune. They’ll change it around from time to time, letting the guitars take a break while horns blast through and bring back the natural melody you’ve been looking for all this time. Ritmo Lento will be out on November 28th, so keep your ears ready!

Pop Filter Return with Dirt Road Anthem

The welcome news of a new LP from Pop Filter never hurts anyone over here at ATH, as our history with the band and its members spans over a decade. Throughout those years we’ve marveled at the group’s abilities to interchange songwriters and never lose a sense of themselves, as you can clearly hear in their brand new single. On the new track, they take a sort of railway mentality, running up the tracks with this steady snap of drums, incorporating the whole group for the harmonies that cement the group’s “pop” craftsmanship. This tune appears on the group’s Trade Place Tape, which drops on October 17th via Bobo Integral.

Washing Machina Drop Debbie Lost Her Mind Video

If you’re looking for a little bit of an indie rock classic, then might we suggest trying out this brand new tune from Sweden’s Washing Machina. The group have just released this brand new single, and to my ears, it kind of takes the softer edge of what Superchunk have been doing; there’s more melody, as one would expect from a Swedish group, offering up more of a pop sentimentality. In terms of the subject matter, the band are discussing everyone’s best friend, the person who pushes themselves to the limits, fun at first and a disaster in the end…don’t be a Debbie (note to self).
