PSA: Modern Rock 500 Returns

The DJs that used to drive the airwaves over at 97X WOXY are friends of ATH. Between shared interests in movies, F1, Premier League and yes, even music, we got to know the team that was on air every day playing the jams we loved. It has been more than a decade since the station moved to Austin only to be disbanded.

One annual tradition over a WOXY was the Modern Rock 500. Think of it as the everlasting gobstopper of playlists; 500 tracks as debated by Mike, Brian, Matt, Barb, Joe, etc. that were influential, impactful or just plain amazing, classics and new jams alike. In conjunction with recent news articles and podcasts involving the DJs and people behind 97X, the Modern Rock 500 is making a return. Inhailer, a pretty great intarwebs radio station in Cincinnati, is playing host. The first play through started this morning with 100 spots per day this week and full replays over the long holiday weekend. The full 500 will be available 5/29 as a complete playlist.

Tractor Beam Share Sex Appeal Single

When I first heard Sasha Balazic’s voice on this Tractor Beam track, I immediately thought of ATH favorite Lachlan Denton; it’s got a slightly distinct tone to it, though still feels like you’re snuggling with a friend under a blanket. There’s a lightness to the song, aided by the accompanying vocals that come with it, all of it wrapped together to kind of lift you on the edges of the wind as your thoughts turn to positive vibes and sunny days. If you’re enjoying what you’re hearing from the group, keep an eye out, as they’re rumored to have an LP from Kingfisher Bluez later in the year.

The Wedding Present Release 24 Songs

The Wedding Present is one of my favorite bands, period. They spent a lot of their 2022 dropping rad singles left and right, just knocking out bangers like it was no big deal. Luckily, if you missed out on those, you can now collect them all on one glorious compilation album titled 24 Songs. It features the following tune, with a nice vocal performance from Louise Wener of Sleeper; it’s one of the mellower tunes, reminding me of the Cinerama stuff that Gedge has done on the side. Anyways, never a bad day when you can get a Wedding Present tune up; 24 songs is out now in the UK, with a US version dropping on June 23rd via HHBTM.

Max Bien Khan Announces When I Cross It Off

If you are in search of a little bit of an introspective singer-songwriter, with just a hint of humor and self-deprecation, then try on New Orleans artist Max Bien Khan. You can easily here where Khan might slide into bed next to Silver Jews or the like, but there’s a touch more twang in the songwriting. I like that, as its definitely something that’s close to home for us, plus it sort of brings about that campfire/group party vibe, which makes sense as Max’s bandcamp describes his music as “partying to someone’s diary,” so the intimacy checks here. Good tune, mellow summer vibes; When I Cross It Off is out on July 7th.

It was a busy week to start, then as usual at this time of year, I teetered out with our coverage; I blame the fact that I stayed up late to catch a great set from En Attendant Ana. We covered a lot of territory, bringing in an old school song from Heavenly, but with a new video to celebrate. Austin got some love with another great Feeling Small tune, plus some bonus Being Dead coverage popping up in there. ATH faves Melenas announced a new record, so really, we had an all out awesome week on our end. Feel free to stop in and check out what we had going.

New Split Screen EP from Walk Home Drunk & Comite Balneaire

Two of my absolute favorite labels as of late, Hidden Bay Records/Safe Suburban Home, have teamed up to bring us a new Split Screen EP, with songs from both Walk Home Drunk and Comite Balneaire. For their part, Walk Home Drunk offers up this gentle tease in the verses; a steady beat and snuggling vocals walk you right into the chorus where the song opens up and gets a bit fuzzy with these guitar lines that pop and skitter. On the other side, you get Comite Balneaire creating this dense realm for what seems like a post-punk rainstorm; the guitars are heavy, almost feeling like sheets of melodic rain falling upon you at all times. Both tracks might have some sonic simlarities, which makes sense considering the two projects are solo monikers for members of Docks/No Drama. Anyways, Split Screen EP will be out June 2nd.

Dayaway Share I Wish Video

If you haven’t caught onto Dayaway yet, then I advise you to spend a little bit of your day soaking in the sunny pop crafted by the duo. I’ll admit, this is all saccharine joy, for me at least. The song has this kicking bounce to it; it’s so infectious I’ve caught myself dancing in my chair completely unaware. Amber Renee’s voice has this misty cool to it, perfectly tied into the scenery you scene behind her in the video presentation. The band are releasing a new EP titled Blue Summer Moon this August via Turn to Wind.

Skinny Dippers and Holding Hours Reimagine Icarus Emerged

When Skinny Dippers released The Town & the City, it was a pretty mellow affair, perfect for Ryan Gross’ voice. On that record was a pretty bare-bones piece titled “Icarus Emerged,” which has now been revisited by friends Holding Hour, adding this beautifully striking depth to the tune and moving it in an entirely different direction. The original, which you can hear HERE, is more along the lines of singer-songwriter, and in the reimagined version, it’s this blossoming bit of dream pop. The edges are fuzzed out, female vocals get tossed in, and this massive bliss burrows deep in your heart. I love the way this worked out, and kind of would love to see more folks go this route for singles and what not.

Landowner Announces Escape the Compound

Musically I am all over the place today, and this Landowner tune is settling my tastes down, although I’m not sure “settling” is the right word here. The Massachusetts band is offering up a brand of galvanized post-punk. Like many of their peers, the vocals are spoken, almost punched into the ears of the listener. Musically, the danger lives in the dynamism of the rhythm section; the gun fires and this track just takes off, sprinting towards a finish line that never comes, continuously chugging at a speed that would have your feet fumbling beneath you. If its a post-punk race, we’re all winning with stuff like this out there; the band will release Escape the Compound via Born Yesterday on July 21st.

The Underground Youth Share I Thought I Understood

If you were looking for something that to throw on your post-punk playlist, might I suggest this new track from Berlin (by way of Manchester) outfit The Underground Youth. Those opening guitar lines tickle you, pricking your ears up before the rhythm section joins in with this bobbing groove that sets the mood for the exploratory nature of Craig Dyer’s voice. Deep and melodic, his voice feels both reflective and pained in this presentation, aided by the way the background billows around him. They’ve just finished up their 11th LP in 15 years; Nostalgia’s Glass will be out on August 14th.
