Dragnet Rip Through with M-99

Not too long ago we brought you the album announcement from Dragnet, a riotous outfit from Melbourne. Today, they’re dropping another pummeling bit of punch punk rock, but this time their unraveling a story of danger and perhaps murder? I mean, the whole tune is about the drug M-99, the drug utilized by the anti-hero Dexter; the lyrics “too late/its in your system/you’re on the table/and I’m bringing down my knife” pretty much confirm my suspicions. Still, the band easily disguise the sinister lyrics with this punchy bit of punk that begs for high volume and repeat listens! If you’re on board with me, then grab the Accession from Spoilsport Records.

Lifeguard Announce New Release; Share 17-18 Lovesong

If you were anywhere near SXSW this past year, you were likely turned onto Lifeguard; they were one of our favorite acts of the festival, dropping these mature performances that went beyond their age. They’ve just announced their first release for Matador Records, which is a combination of an old EP and a fresh one to get you excited for their future. Listening through, it sort of reminds me of At the Drive-In during the Vaya EP; they’ve got this masterful balance between hypnotic pulses and artful noise; you’re being pulled and pushed while the lyrics seem to echo more of a mantra than a typical mantra. Look for everyone to rave about this trio; they drop Crowd Can Talk/Dressed in Trenches on July 7th.

Rob I. Miller Shares New Single from Companion Piece

Having recently rocked a lot of socks off with Blues Lawyer, Rob I. Miller doesn’t seem to have dropped any of those hooks with his latest single. I know I’m one small voice, but the way the track was recorded reminds me a lot of that pop created by acts like the Lucksmiths, bringing in these crisp guitars from the jangling realm, heating them over a nice bit of melody and just letting the hooks loose. You can also feel this natural swing in the tune, where it drops a bit of the speed, only to sweep you right back up with these quick drum rolls to punctuate the vocals. Charms galore if you ask me; Companion Piece will be out via Vacant Stare Records on May 12th.

Girl Scout Share Monster Video

When we caught up with some of our friends from Sweden during SXSW, they all joined us and we headed over to catch the first set of the festival by Girl Scout; the band smashed it, and we all were bobbing our heads to the huge hooks. Listening to their latest single, you can hear similarities to bands like the Beths, bridging pop rock and bedroom pop to build these huge “monster” jams that are perfect for singalongs. There’s still this wicked tenacity that shines through, letting us know that just because you can hear the hook, doesn’t mean you can’t rock it out really really loud. Turn this up as we all await the band’s forthcoming EP, slated for release in the Fall!

Elephant Stone Share New Music: Dawn, Day, Dusk

There has always been something in the work of Elephant Stone that seemed to move beyond the traditional psychedelic territory; they seemed to take the standard staples and build upon them to create something wholly new. This is precisely where we find them with their new release, Dawn, Day, Dusk; it’s a brief release, highlighted by a 7 minute tune that is inspired by Isaac Asimov’s Foundation Trilogy; the song also incorporates classical Indian music, supporting my idea that the band have always been so much more than just your run of the mill psych act. The track has a journey too, moving between spacey stomps and effortless bits of classical pop charms and then those bits of Indian music, all of it feeling like storytelling in musical form. Give it a go!

Wireheads Share Hook Echo Video

I was immediately hooked on the latest track from Wireheads, particularly when that riff just drops in out of the ambiance and delivers that crunchiness I crave. Having been mostly quiet since 2017’s Lightning Ears, this definitely seems like the band have returned without missing a beat, keeping that edge and tenacity in the songwriting. What I appreciate here, however, is that you get this little curl of cool from Dom Trimboli’s steadied vocal delivery; the band add backing vocals in just the right spots, allowing the syllables to latch onto the faintest hook and keep pop elements lurking in the group’s work. Sure, there’s jagged edges on the surface, but crack through and you’ll hear a band centered on writing playful pop songs like all the rest! If you’re digging it, then be sure to check out Potentially Venus, the newest album out June 23rd via Tenth Court Records.

Feeling Small Share Gymnasium

Watching your friends grow and find their footing in life is always a place of privilege, allowing you to take joy in their successes; this is precisely the case with our friend Chase Weinacht and his new project Feeling Small. Today he shares another single, a track that seems to detail just that, finding his place and his voice as one of Austin’s strongest songwriters. Musically, Chase relies upon his voice as the melodic drive as he works carefully over intricate guitar lines; he gets some textural support from light bass, along with some ethereal backing vocals. In the narrative, whether Weinacht is our character or not, you get an artist sort of coming to terms with their own capabilities, realizing that they, too, can be great…or in the case of Chase…they are great.

Hand Habits Share Their Private Life

Call it old age or whatever, but I’m admittedly getting swept away, emotionally, by certain pieces of late. For instance, the simplistic beauty and elegance in this fresh Hand Habits tune simply took me aback. Meg Duffy’s voice has little other accompaniment through the first few minutes other than this climbing piece of piano work; there’s this feeling of baring it all that seems to resonate with that moment, which alludes to their willingness to kind of let the sounds and songs find themselves this go round. It all leaves you with this moment where you’re sort of levitating in this empty space, just floating with you and your mind and the song on loop. This song features on Sugar the Bruise, out on June 16th via Fat Possum.

Alien Eyelid Share Where Elgin Bends

Alien Eyelid is a band made up of Texas music veterans from various genres, but the more we get to hear from their debut LP, the more I’m totally enamored by their performance. This new single has these sparkling tones, playing upon the fascination with Western sounds, but there’s something far more elegant in the craft; the arrangements add these delicate touches that bend in and out of the tune, creating this depth that sets up the vocals. I won’t lie, I nearly cried when I hit that chorus, especially as it has that special set up from the vocals in the verse, then drops into this brilliant bit of cuddly warmth. Can’t say enough great things about this song, or this album; Bronze Star is out this Friday.

The Hannah Barberas Prepare Fantastic Tales of the Sea; Share Latest Single

It is the first day of the month, which means we’re in line for a bunch of new records in the glorious month of May, like Fantastic Tales of the Sea, the latest from The Hannah Barberas. Their latest single takes their brand of jangling pop styles and elevates it to this almost theatric nature, making it leap right through your speakers. As the band trade vocal lines back and forth, I couldn’t help but feel as if I was listening to a well-recorded musical; there’s this live spirit in the way the voices get recorded that just jumped out at me, begging me to stand in the aisle and boogie down. Get your pop fix right here, right now; the new LP comes out on May 26th via Spinout Nuggets/Doo Lang/Subjangle, Gazer Tapes.
