We’re not too far off from getting to hear the entirety of Possessions from our friends Blushing, but they keep teasing us along with these singles. The latest is built on this huge sonic cliff, raising the listener while the the vocals sail out; it’s like a black and white version of someone standing on the edge of the Hawksbill Crag, letting their voice flow over the Buffalo River below. But, not content to settle in one mode, the track actually builds heavier and heavier, pounding through your speakers as the band push towards the tune’s end. They’re at the top of their game, so grab the LP from Kanine Records before it sells out; it drops on February 18th.

Aika El Grupo Share New Single

Feel like the Winter time has a tendency to turn a bit mellow, so I want to make sure we’ve all got punchy pop to push our energy when we’re in a rut…so what better than Aiko El Grupo‘s new single! The tune’s just a frivolous blast of Spanish pop punk, full of this exuberance that I can’t believe they captured on tape; it reminds you in a lot of ways of Joanna Gruesome, without a care in the world. The drum beat will have you stomping, and the video will likely bring a slight grin to your face. If your day needs a kick in the pants, turn it up and have some fun.

Ari Roar Shares Honors Around, Drops Made to Never Use

Dallas’ Ari Roar has appeared quite a bit on our site, so with his latest release, Made to Never Use, dropping this last Friday, I wanted to be sure that we gave the LP a little shout out. His work on this new record reminds me a lot of Albert Hammond Jr, focusing on sharp guitar pop with really solid melodic work that just makes you feel like life could get a little bit better. I love how the song begins to kind of roll in the chorus, like this Texas storm quickly blowing through with a burst of catchy pop before steadying itself and riding off into the sunset. Give a listen, won’t you.

Good Grief Share How Can I Help Falling in Love

If you’ve not got Good Grief on your radar, might I suggest saving a quick 3 minutes of your day to be sure you have time to jam out. The Liverpool trio are playing this fuzzy guitar pop that lands somewhere between 90s college rock and power-pop, with a little sprinkle of pop-punk/emo thrown in for good measure. Dissonant guitars open before letting the song bound away on this bouncing rhythmic line; the guitars jump in, sharply adding layers to the bop, while the vocals operate as if they’re calling you to arms. For me, it’s all about that chorus though, tossing in a sweet melodic note that gets ushered through real quick thanks to the rushing guitar line. If you love it, and you do, then you’ll want to grab Shake Your Faith, out March 18th via HHBTM and Everything Sucks Music.

Loops & Loops Share Just Be You

I’m not sure whether its Peter Bogolub’s songwriting, or the thematic nature of this tune that hits home to a middle school teacher, but the latest from Loops & Loops is definitely a special ditty. I love how you almost immediately get access to the emotional portal that’s built in the strumming of guitars. Plus, there’s this atmospheric push from the background that seems to carry the heavy-weighted vocal notes, lifting them to the top of the mix so you can devour them as little pieces of delightful ear candy. If ever there was a song that taught you just to love yourself as you are, well, I hope its this one because it absolutely rules.

Public Body Reset My Password

Okay, so maybe Public Body didn’t reset “my” password, but that’s the new single from the band’s forthcoming EP, so it seems a fitting post title. The band are specializing in that frantic bit of angular post-punk, driving their angst against the storm as the vocals serve to steady the ship. It’s quite similar to a lot of what’s coming out of the UK, with the lyrical content delivered in a very matter of fact manner. Still, the driving nature in the musical element is sharp and bouncing, enticing you to get out of your chair and pogo about with glee. If you’re digging it, Flavour of Labour is out on March 4th!

Vern Matz Share Getting Older, Drop New LP

Last year we stumbled into Vern Matz, and we were really grateful for their mellow guitar pop. It’s simplicity proved the power of the songwriting, with little need for extra brush strokes, and it seems that we get the much of the same on the newest release, Strange Songs from a Lifetime of Unfinished iPhone Demos. The name hints at the tunes being unpolished, and perhaps even incomplete, but you wouldn’t be able to tell that listening through the strumming and little atmosphere lurking in the background. If you’re settling in for the day, as the blistering whether lurks outside, then perhaps you should settle down with this new album; it’s sure to warm you right up!

The Reds, Pinks and Purples Share New Single

Well, I’m just patiently waiting for Glenn Donaldson to give me a call and invite ATH Records to be part of the Reds, Pinks and Purples story. Sadly, my phone’s been silent, but Glenn hasn’t, releasing a brand new pair of songs the other day, even though he’s already scheduled to drop Summer at Land’s End this February. “I Still Owe You Everything” is this brilliant piece of fuzzy pop, bouncing on the backbeat as Donaldson weaves his poetry on the fogs of San Francisco. The flip side of that single is something a little different, build as a ballad atop a forlorn piano, emotively matching every vocal note, pulling on the heartstrings of every RPP fan out there. Exek Share Unseasonable Warmth Video

When Exek first came onto my radar in 2018, they were flirting with the artier side of post-punk, letting things get a little experimental within the confines of pop structures. On their forthcoming Advertise Here LP, the group seem to be pushing further away from any punk tendencies, and even stretching what it means to be a pop act. They’re fusing their art bits with little sprinkles of drum, bass and maybe even French pop flare; the vocals are sedate, almost static as they add tiny little melodic flourishes to the tune, particularly when the female voice floats in there. Definitely nice to see more folks expanding their sound beyond my expectations; look for the new LP via Castle Face Records on February 4th.

Skep Wax Announces Under the Bridge

I’ve made no secret of my affection for Sarah Records, so it’s great to see that our friends at Skep Wax (partners in our Swansea Sound release) are rekindling the Sarah flame with a new compilation, Under the Bridge. There’s 14 songs, many with original Sarah Records acts like Secret Shine and the Orchids, releasing exclusive content specifically for this compilation, with a few related acts like The Catenary Wires and Jetstream Pony also being thrown into the fray. I love that the collection points at what all these bands are doing now, rather than continuously praising them for all they’ve done before (but read that Bandcamp Guide HERE). Hopefully these new recordings give you a glimpse at what you may (though hopefully you didn’t!) have missed over the years…all leading up to the release of the LP on March 18th.
