Swansea Sound Selling Their Soul on EBay!!!

They promised us they’d do it, so they up and wrote a song about selling their souls on EBay. Swansea Sound (members of Catenary Wires/Pooh Sticks) have recorded their smash hit single, putting their heart and soul into the recording (it was pressed into the vinyl!) and pressing to a super limited run of 5 7″ copies. Four go to members of the band, and the final one is currently being auctioned on EBay; you can bid HERE(it was 20 pounds when I posted this!). Plus, they made a fun teaser video, but be sure to stick through to the end, as the band make an emphatic appearance just as the song closes in bang-out fashion! If anything, stick around for the delectable pop treat at the 30 second mark!

Fuvk Drop New Album

Those who’ve been carefully keeping an eye on the Austin music scene will already be aware of the talented of Fuvk, the work of Shirley Zhu. I’ve really enjoyed the 10 tracks on this release, with a lot of them featuring duets of sorts, blending in Zhu’s bedroom pop with other nuanced acts, like the pop meets hip-hop touches of “Take Me Back” that opens the album. Folks will likely gravitate towards “Wishful Thinking,” as it jumps out as a single perfectly aligned with modern indie rock, with a nice little sample breakdown lurking behind Shirley’s guitar work. Imaginary Deadlines is out now via Z Tapes Records.

New Tune from Dannika

Late last year we heard about Dannika, one of the latest acts to sign on to work with our friends at Osborne Again Music, and now there’s another single to share with you from the Melbourne bunch. I love the song’s natural bounce, both from the rhythm section and that lead guitar line; it builds up the immediate infectiousness that helps the song land in that sweet spot for the listener. Match that up with just a slightly deepened vocal, and you get this perfect little bit of pure pop magic. The band will release their new album Gems on January 29th!

Forgot About This Mo Troper Tune

I think I can finally clean out all my old emails from 2020 by sharing this Mo Troper tune, which honestly, I would have shared on its release at the end of December had we not been shut down for sanity’s sake. Mo’s got this great power pop feel of late; I love how he stretches his vocals to the tip top of his range, letting it ride on top of the mix as the guitars churn just beneath him. The song just feels like that shimmering sun warming you through your living room window as you gaze into the future; I feel like I could really use that right now. Check his last LP, Natural Beauty too, if you haven’t done so already!

Mint Eastwood Shares Man from Atlantis

Weird how listening to a new artists on your radar immediately takes you back in time, like when I first listened to this Mint Eastwood tune, I couldn’t help but think of Jason Lytle and Grandaddy. There’s that soft electronic fuzz that wraps itself around the vocals, squeezing out every drop of pop sensibility. I’ve really enjoyed how the song sits back a bit, showing some restraint too, so it doesn’t go over the top and smack the listener in the face with its pop bravado. Seems like the perfect tune to turn on in the background while you watch the waves of 2021 roll into your life…or you know, if you just want to listen to a really good song.

More Music from Kelly Duplex

I’ve really been enjoying the stuff I’ve heard from New Oreleans’ Kelly Duplex; they’re running out singles to prepare you for the release of their self-titled album. I love the heavy immediacy of this tune, racing into this wall of ledded guitars vibrating all the stuff on your walls before the vocals slink in to provide a careful balance. But, as much as that works for me, I was totally sold when they break it down right at the 1 minute mark for some crunchy guitar work and a slower build; it gives the song this infectiousness I adore (reminds me of our own Growl) before blasting forth again. The new LP is out on February 12th.

Wurld Series Announce What’s Growing LP

After hinting at a new album in 2019, Wurld Series have finally announced their new LP, What’s Growing; it’s being handled by our faves over at Osborne Again, Melted Ice Cream and Meritorio Records, so it seems fitting we’re already onboard. It’s really hard to extrapolate one finite influence; I hear modern styles in that sort of slow-core pop like Hovvdy, but it’s seemingly filtered through a 90s filter a la Pavement or Dinosaur Jr. Plus, throw in some sonic feedback squalls, and the band feels like its sort of all over the place. Suffice to say, if you like slow churning rock n’ roll, splashed with creativity and flare, then this one’s for you!

Uplifiting Pop Number from Randolph’s Leap

Definitely need our spirits lifted after yesterday’s American shitshow, so good thing there’s this new Randolph’s Leap hanging out there. It immediately jumps in with this joyous gang chorus, raising joy from the get-go. Once the song moves forward into the verses, it sort of takes on that chamber pop feel, bursting forth with horns and various instrumental textures. I won’t deny how much I love the rise and fall of the chorus here, like a roller coaster with a huge lollipop waiting for you at the end. Their new album Spirit Level will be out courtesy of Fika Recordings on February 26th.

Sun June Share Everything I Had

Let’s face it…this is the year that Sun June goes big. We’ve long backed the band for huge things, and with Run for Cover in their corner (along with friends Keeled Scales too!), the expectations for the Austin quintet are super high! Luckily for you, they’ve got the music to back that up, as you can hear in the band’s final single before Somewhere drops in early February. For starters, this is probably my favorite vocal performance from Laura too; her voice has this graceful majesty that rides the crest of the song as the video courses through these nostalgic videos that resonate with the track’s lyrical content. A little over a month and you can grab the LP on February 5th.

Have You Listened to Walt?

Seeing as we’re always trying to bring you the best news from the Australian scene, I thought I’d introduce you all to Walt…another great act out of Melbourne. But, while the relaxed pacing of this single might be familiar to those in love with this particular musical scene, the comparisons stop there (thus why pigeonholing scenes is dumb–note to self). Musically, this is dense pop world that doesn’t feel crowded; there’s plenty of space for movement, allowing notes to take on this resonation that billows through your speakers. This dream vision is one of the earliest glimpses we get at Walt’s craft, with a debut album dangling on the horizon.
