For years I’ve begged She Sir to work with them; we never managed to make it work, until now. I’m really excited to share a new single from She Sir, as well as welcome them to ATH Records for the release of Ways a Season. This track exemplifies the band’s direction on their latest release, aiming to elevate their brand of pop music to the highest echelons of art. Plus, the art matched with the vinyl is ridiculously beautiful (orange 12″, if you’re asking). New Music from Space Daze

Danny Rowland has a handful of releases with his band Seapony, but he also has just as many under his solo project, Space Daze. The latter utilizes a similarly dreamy aspect, though there’s this clarity that makes the pop sensibility a little more sharp in the speakers. On this tune, you can see where Real Estate comparisons slide in, though I’m feeling as if this tune has this element of thoughtfulness that really rewards a listener. Sitting back, this song just washes over you, carrying away needless worries and replacing them with a bounding melody; you don’t get that with your every day guitar ditty. Look for Too Mystical via Lost Sound Tapes (whoa, twice in one day) on February 8th.

New Music from Small Forward

I first heard Small Forward when they dropped their Affections EP via Forged Artifacts back in 2017, and now it looks like there’s new music on the horizon. I love the growth the band have shown, even within this singular tune. The track trickles in nice and slow, letting guitar chords dance and shimmer right behind the feathered vocals; it all seems calm and chilled out. But, around the 2:20 mark, there’s this gradual build and an emphatic movement in the track that still holds the melodic majesty while seeming all the more powerful than before. No word on when this song will pop up, and where, but a great song to share with you nonetheless.

Pleased to Meet You: Olivia’s World

You’re working through your day, enjoying various tunes, and suddenly Rose Melberg’s name pops up under new releases. You scour the Internet, you rush to find the track…lo and behold, there’s Olivia’s World, a new band featuring Rose on drums, with friends Lica and Joe joining in. The trio craft that insatiable sort of pop, high on fuzzy, hook-laden guitars, and heavy on the sugary vocals that make any listener swoon. The video is playful, attached to the feeling of the song, with Lica seemingly having the most fun with her shark impression. Lost Sound Tapes promise to have a cassette EP out this Spring…but it’ll sell out quick if the songs are all as good as this.

Chitra Releases Video for Better Than Before

Late towards the end of 2018, there was a faint murmur of Chitra, who had signed on with Our Golden Friend to release a her debut EP. Today we get to enjoy this wonderfully penned ballad displaying her powerful voice. The instrumentation behind that voice is minimal, on purpose, allowing the vocals to carry the entirety of the tune, and boy do they. At times it’s a solemn croon, other times it moves into these higher pitched angelic tones; it seems Chitra knows no boundaries on her voice. This a striking first listen to an artists I’m sure we’ll here a lot more from in the next year!

Brand New Business of Dreams

We continue our regular column supporting all things Corey Cunningham by bringing you the latest single from his Business of Dreams project. I’m not sure how he’s been able to do it, but he’s topped his previous release, and is running nearly neck and neck with some of his other projects that I adore. I love the keyboard work in this track; it sort of gives this shining brightness from behind the mix, allowing for the wispy vocals to coolly wash over the listener. I don’t want to gush, except that I do. This song is just one example of everything that is great about the new album; there’s ten other examples on Ripe for Anarchy, out Feb 1st via Slumberland.

Bedroom Pop from Julia Rakel

Everyone knows that Malmo is a hotbed of musical activity for the masses, and let’s just add Julia Rakel to that list. She’s just released the single below, which shows her crafting this unassuming bedroom pop. It moves in slow over sampled beats, letting Rakel’s voice shine early on before it brings in light percussion that adds a touch of rhythm to the track. The song itself has Julia using the line “Please Don’t Fall In Love With Me,” to drive home the song’s thematic element, with Rakel calling it a ‘a sad one, with happy wrappings.” Look for a debut EP in March via Rama Lama Records.

Spin This Dark Tea Tune

Don’t you want to find a song that feels familiar almost immediately? If so, then perhaps you should spin this Dark Tea tune right away. It’s a seemingly simple ditty, with quick strumming and a feathery melody letting you sort of float about in midair. Of course, there’s some string flourishes and a nice little distorted jam in the middle, flexing the song’s muscles as it carries on; I guess it sort of reminds of the poppier stuff the Dead pushed out in that sort of friendly campfire fashion. The self-titled album is out March 22nd via Fire Talk Records.

New Music from Lady Lamb

It’s been a few years since Lady Lamb has popped up on our radar, but today comes news that she’ll be releasing her 3rd full length, Even in the Tremor. Through the first minute of the song, there’s little more than Aly’s voice and this pulse/beat, letting her voice and lyrics do the work. But, as we saw with After, her song’s grow with power and that emphatic burst at the 1 minute mark as the song continues to develop. I love how the song sort of dips and dives, recedes beneath itself then jumps back through your speakers; it gives off the aura of a live performance, which is something at which to marvel. Even in the Tremor is out April 5th via Ba Da Bing, with a nice little tour to coincide with the release.

We’ve been raving over Fanclub since there was a Fanclub. And now, we want you to turn your attention to the band’s new All the Same EP, which is streaming on the Interwebs today. It contains the huge hits “Leaves” and “Strangers,” as well as bringing in a few new songs we hadn’t heard…at least in the recorded fashion. For a pigeonhole, imagine if Pains of Being Pure at Heart peeled back the distortion, added a little more danceable stomp and then traded Kip for Leslie. Those new songs are definitely destined to be as popular as the preceding singles; I love the dreamy quality that “Swear” offers up. You can head HERE to grab the latest release from Fanclub.
