Just a few weeks ago, Mikey Demilio released Billionaires Club, which is a collection of tunes that operate along the various lines of indie rock; there’s anxious numbers, upbeat jams and some spins just illustrate that he’s a young artist working to find his sound. I chose the tune below because it’s got this high-kicking stomp to it, and I absolutely love to get my groove started in that spot. The angular notes open up to this vocal effect that feels like a big wash of emotion’s ready to stomp right on through your door. There’s a vibrance that’s undeniable here, and perhaps loving this song will guide you to the rest of his LP.

Wombo Shares Spyhopping Single

Every twist and turn on this new single from Wombo seems intentionally set, like the band are purposefully sonically shapeshifting, lulling us into the secretive realms of their sound. At times, struck notes can ring discordantly, but they don’t put you off, only pique your interest as the bass works you back into the rhythm of the track. It goes this way, then that way, letting Sydney Chadwick weave her way through the well-crafted skeletal backbone of this jam. Danger in Fives is out on August 8th via Fire Talk.

Winter Shares Without You

Admittedly, you’re probably sincerely tired of hearing bedroom pop this and bedroom pop that, but if there’s one record on the horizon that I think will be perfect for those nights alone with the record on, it’s this new Winter. If you listen to the way it’s set up on the latest single, it’s got a very light stroke, with Samira’s voice drenching the track in this heavy melody that consistently encompasses my brain’s interpretation of ethereal. Every little bit of the mix just works perfectly, and each time I press play, I don’t want to take my headphones out for fear that the magic will disappear. I bet you’re going to feel the same, so be sure to order Adult Romantix via Winspear before its August 22nd release date.

Peter Cat Drop Mango Season

Beneath these little words you’ll find a subtle dancefloor hit from Peter Cat, the sort that burrows into your soul, and perhaps lightens the load of the day you carry upon your back. The rhythmic pulse works instantly, snapping at your heels with its cymbal samples and bass heavy groove. When the vocals jump into the fold, they take on this playful mood, sort of stabbing at the textural element bit by bit, though digging deeper you’ll find that the lyrics encourage you to drop the weight and immerse yourself in whatever it is you love. New TAGABOW Album On Its Way

If you have yet to be caught up in the hype surrounding They Are Gutting a Body of Water, you’ll be pleased to know that this is one of the rarer instances where the hype is fitting. They greet you with a trickle of guitar, then they break the door down with a wall of feedback and distortion, quietly sneaking vocals in behind the barrage of melodic noise. Once the tune opens, the guitars dance carefully, almost as if they’re careful of stepping on the vocal portion of the tune; the group gets to hang hear before riding another crest of noise to the close. Their new LP, Lotto, will be out on October 17th.

Fortitude Valley Share Oceans Apart

A surefire way to catch my ear is by making a slight nod to the Go-Betweens, and that’s exactly what Fortitude Valley have done with their latest single, “Oceans Apart.” It’s the third and final single from their forthcoming record, and it’s a solid pop rock ripper, the sort that we love to just push to the top. There’s nothing fancy, save for some of the guitar soloing, but it’s got a classic driving rhythm and the vocals are the perfect fit, never rushing the song. Simple, sweet and with a sprinkle of an edge…all the things that are going to put you in love with Part of the Problem, dropping August 1st via Specialist Subject Records.

Sunny Garage Rock from Acapulco Lips

The humidity down here is something else right now, as we have been living in a mixture of heat and rain, so this new track from Acapulco Lips feels like the best way weather accompaniment. This new jam kicks off with a wiggling bit of psychedelia, but once that wriggle shakes out, the tune moves into a pop garage rock vibe. Maria-Elena’s voice takes this nostalgic tilt, hitting on some of the classic doo-wop notes, aligning the twists and turns with a little bit more pop than some might expect. They balance it perfectly too, twisting between the psychedelic dens and the party-going beach, but you’ll have to keep an eye out for Now in order to hear which voice wins out; it drops on Friday.

I love a band that offers no bullshit. They get up on the stage, turn up the amps and just rock it out, much like you get when you catch the Living Pins. Their recorded music is much the same, as you’ll hear in their latest single. The band notes that the tune takes its roots in a bit of classic rock sound, but as the vocals hit with those stuttering riffs, there was something that felt like a rocking version of Alanis Morissette, which I actually think is really cool. The rhythm section holds the swagger, letting the edges kind of get fuzzy with psychedelic tinges and feedback while the rest of the group just give you straightforward rock. Give a listen, won’t you.

What a crazy week of music it was. We had new shit, cool shit, trendy shit, weird shit, dance shit…just a bunch of really awesome tunes. Austin had a lot of representation, with new jams from K. Boswell, Die Spitz and Day Friend and Thanks Light. There were several outright rad tunes that you need to crank up, like BRNDA and Weakened Friends, so be sure you click to give those the proper love. Some cool electronica style bops too, from the likes of Angel T33th, Brown Lemon and Solo Career. And, if you know what’s right for you, you’ll swing below and turn on that new Shame track…or find something weird in between.

Friday Album Streams: Allo Darlin, Karl Frog, The Wind-Ups and More

A lot of really great music dropped today, and, well, we’d be poor stewards of the underground if we didn’t point you in the right direction for some of these new releases. You get indiepop legends returning after a lengthy absence; you get a bit of a modern take on the Pastels; try on an eccentric crooner; and end up with a little noise pop. You can’t go wrong with any of these releases, but as always be sure to support the artists and labels!
