ATX Spotlight: AMA Releases New Single

Those of you following Austin’s AMA closely might be a touch surprised with this new single, as it presents a softer sound than what’s been presented in their recorded material to date. Honestly, I’ve always loved the songwriting of Blair Robbins, but this tune’s offering up something remarkable, pulling every ounce of emotion out of listeners; I love when her voice almost strains to stretch the notes out. This song’s casual style brings a certain level of charm that’s intoxicating, putting the rest of Austin on notice that Robbins is here to make a name for herself. It’s up for the NYOP option, but throw some funds so they can get back to writing more hits.

Olden Yolk Sings for a Cause

Olden Yolk is the project of Shane Butler of Quilt, and while I love his music (in both realms) I have the utmost respect for his strength as a human. When you click on this song, be sure to visit the site it leads you to, and read the story of Shane’s mother’s passing. It’s led him to release the sign in hopes of both raising money and bringing awareness to mental illness by donating all funds raised to Bring Change 2 Mind. We’ve all got a lot to do to make the world a better place, and this seems like as good a cause as any.

New Video from Tres Oui

Last week we were super excited to release Singles Going Nowhere, the debut EP from Austin’s Tres Oui (featuring members of Rose Selavy and Literature). Immediately after the band hit the road (Tour Dates), and now they want to share this great video with you from the standout tune, “Party Planner.” The video, created by Herb Shellenberger, features a whole lot of kissing, and musically, a whole lot of great energy. You’ll also hear the voice of Lomelda‘s Hannah giving an extra bit of pop to the tune. We did a limited release with our friends at Square of Opposition, so buy it HERE.

Novella Release Intoxicating New Single

It takes two minutes of pulsating notes to mesmerize the listener on this new Novella tune before anything grand happens. For me, that’s a promising sign, as it builds the anticipation, then finally unleashingquiet notes and soft vocals to the delight of your ears. Such an approach is only used carefully, and few have mastered it with the quality and grace this foursome has, thus counting me as one of their many supporters. Change of State, their new album, will be released by Sinderlyn next Friday, February 17th, just in time to wrap yourself in the warm musical blanket the band is bringing forth…unless of course you’re with us in Austin…then it’ll be about 95 degrees.

New 7″ From Andrew St. James

After many months of much hard work from myself and several others, I’m elated today to bring you news of our upcoming 7″ single from young gun Andrew St. James. Now I’ve been a fan of Andrew for quite awhile so this project is something that means a whole lot to me. As his first release on vinyl, Andrew has hand picked this track, “You’ll be Fine”, to be featured as the A-side with “Red Hair Green Eyes” as B-side. “You’ll be Fine” is a perfect example of Andrew’s superb songwriting skills similar to greats like Tallest Man or Dylan. This is surely a kick off to a promising and bright career as a top up and coming singer songwriter. Stay tuned in the coming weeks as we’ll bring you the sweet B-side soon.

The Spookfish Announces Debut Album

Dan Goldberg began The Spookfish in 2007, journeying about the world recording his dreams and experiences, but he’s just announced his debut album…from the studio at least. It still has that glorious intimacy to it, opening with a slight field recording before the buzz of the studio creeps into your speakers. The rest is pulled back to allow Goldberg’s voice to seep in atop the strummed guitar; I do think I heard a door shut in the distance, but other than that, it’s a pretty straightforward gem once you get settled. Fire Talk will be releasing Black Hole on April 21st.

More Music from Lowly

This new Lowly track is another example of why the band is quickly making a name for themselves in our neck of the woods. Tight percussion works beneath a wash of synthesizers as the heavenly vocals fill in the rest. The band uses a great bit of negative space, never allowing instruments to step atop of one another or the voice; it’s textured pop music, but the sparkling clarity leaves a stunning impact on listeners. The band will release their album Heba tomorrow via Bella Union, and you’ll want to be sure to spend some time with it going into this weekend.

Did You Miss New Cold Beat

I miss Hannah Lew, though I suppose it hasn’t been too long since we last heard from her project, Cold Beat. Nonetheless, the band is back with a brand new album, and this new track is as delightfully dreamy as I’d want. Synths work against ringing guitar chords, and Lew’s vocal distantly serenades listeners. One of my favorite bits about her work is that there’s not too much brevity in her work, always giving us enough to watch the song unfold as its meant to be. Chaos by Invitation will see a release on April 7th via Crime on the Moon, so look for more tracks to sink your teeth into soon.

Stunning New Tune from Jake Xerxes Fussell

The history of the furniture man runs deep through the heart of the South, appearing in various blues traditions, but Jake Xerxes Fussell gives it his own spin on this new single. You’ll hear slide guitar and careful picking throughout the tune, but in a ballad such as this, the power of the voice is what really shines. Fussell has this deep tone, but there’s a few notes where you can hear him pushing himself, straining to get every drop of emotion from within onto this recording. Hopefully you’ll find some comfort in such a strong outing, and if so, look for Jake’s new album, What in the Natural World, via Paradise of Bachelors on March 31st.

New Wolf Girl Tune

This tune hit my news feed courtesy of the hot site Gold Flake Paint and I just couldn’t help but posting it, especially considering it all comes via Odd Box Records. Wolf Girl will be releasing a brand new 7″ on the label this May, and those of you inspired by heavy riffs balanced with pop sensibility will be inclined to press play over and over again. There’s a light twinkle to the guitars in the midst of heavy distortion, all the while carrying a carefree attitude that embeds the song’s hooks deep in the caverns of your mind. Turn it up and have some fun!
