ATX Show Spotlight: Rose Selavy @ Cheer Up Charlies

rose_selavy_bandIt’s Monday night, so why not start off your week with some of the best pop music the city has to offer…not to mention, it will be FREE!  Cheer Up Charlies is hosting San Antonio’s Hypersleep, but the bill will be book-ended by some of our favorite locals, Rose Selavy and Ultraviolet.  Did I mention that Rose Selavy also has a 7″ coming out this week on our ATH Records?  I mean, this will be the best chance to preview the band’s work before you head out and grab your own copy.  If you’re not in town, that 7″ can be found HERE.  So, come out and hang tonight and enjoy some indiepop delights.

ATH Records to Release Split with Rose Selavy and Templo X

U_70027M_FO_PROOF-2In case you weren’t following us on twitter on Friday, or you don’t troll me like my mother does, then you might not have been aware that ATH Records is putting out a brand new 7″ with our friends Rose Selavy and Templo X…two mostly Austin bands (save Paul from Templo who currently resides in Philly).  I’ve oft complained about the lack of a solid indiepop scene here, and if any bands are going to help make that better, it’s these two acts.  RS offers the more modern take with bubbling bass and warm vocals, while TX turns in a good classic jangling vibe for you.  The 7″ is pressed on green vinyl and limited to 350.  You can pick up your very own copy by ordering it HERE.

Buy This Debutantes 7″ from Emotional Response

11020761_10153147013484577_8079677916334810216_nThe two sides of this new 7″ from the Debutantes are pretty brilliant, yet completely distinct in their respective sounds. The A Side “Adams Apples” is the punishing bit of noise rock with an underlying current of pop sensibility, and very likely to break through your speakers…in a really good way.  The flip side has “Kids,” which is a much softer look at the Irish act. This song stays true to the historical undercurrent of indiepop, though the recording has this endearing distortion to it, so as not to be too shimmering.  The 7″ just came out from the really awesome folks over at Emotional Response, so you can grab yourself a copy of it right HERE. Oh, and if you order it now, it comes with a 4 song download that makes up the band’s debut EP.

Dreamy Pop from Horsebeach

horsesAs a Manchester United fan, and a fan of the city’s musical production over the last few decades, I always like to take a gander at what’s going on in the fair city.  It seems that the hip new thing is quite incredible; Horsebeach is the work of Ryan Kennedy, and he’s crafting glorious bedroom pop.  You’ll hear the typical wash of atmospherics in his work, but if you listen closely there’s these intricate little guitar parts beneath the mix, akin to Mac DeMarco, only a wee bit more depressing.  This is the B-Side to his newest 7″ that also features “Disappear,” so grab it if you’re so inclined.

Ski Lodge Return to Smooth Out the Edges

skierIt’s been a bit since we’ve heard from Ski Lodge, and I’m glad to see the band’s return…I loved Big Heart.  While their first effort seemed to hold tight to the realm of indiepop, they look to go with a smoother, larger pop sound behind the efforts of main songwriter, Andrew Marr.  You’ll still hear huge harmonies and melodies bursting forth, though in a different fashion…those touches have been polished to sound more like a band working in a hi-fi studio. The “Trust” 7″ will be available for pop fans on February 23rd.

Jeremy Jay form Dystopian Violet

1040150_1592993227601811_4312947698220765168_oLong has ATH supported the work of Jeremy Jay, and we’re not backing down on giving his writing our full support, as he now officially has a band, Dystopian Violet.  Our first glimpse at the band has them picking up 0n the warm tones that Jay has often employed, though I hear a slight difference in the way his voice was recorded for the track.  Unfortunately, this track will not be released on the group’s forthcoming LP, but it’s a separate 7″ that should see the light of day shortly.  This is the perfect way for our week to start.

Listen to the New Lemuria Single

Earlier this fall we caught a quite exceptional set from lemuriaLemuria over at Mohawk, and I’ve been thirsting to hear more music from the band ever since that night.  Luckily, this track popped up just the other day, and it’s worth sharing with you all. I really love the approach the band takes on this tune, revealing a classic alternative rock sound, which was produced by Mark Ryan of Marked Men.  Plus, if you pick this up (December 16th), as you should, then you’ll get a 40 page comic book alongside your purchase…so you’ve got to appreciate a little differentiation on the sales side…that and this song’s great. They’ll also be back in Austin at the end of November.

The Coathangers Ready New 7″

squeezerIf you haven’t read these pages since February, you might not be aware of how much I love the work of The Coathangers in 2014…not that the love wasn’t there beforehand, but it’s pretty strong this year after the release of their album Suck My Shirt.  The three ladies have readied a brand new 7″ for Suicide Squeeze where they’ll be covering “Sex Beat” by The Gun Club.  It’s just another example of their ability to add a gritty catchiness to anything they touch.  You’ll also be able to hear a song from These Arms are Snakes, who are splitting the 7″ with the band; it hits stores on December 2nd.

Missed This One: New Tune from Audacity

audacityLast year I was really digging the sounds of Audacity; this was fueled on by a great performance I caught of the band during SXSW.  That being said, I’m surprised I missed a new tune and 7″ announcement from the group, which has been billowing about for a week or two.  The band is one of those that offers up two sides of things, hitting fast and heavy or bringing some pop stylings…this round they’re landing more on the side of fast and heavy, and even a little brash.  I’m game for it all when it comes to this band, so check it out. You can grab the Counting the Days 7″ on December 2nd from Suicide Squeeze.

The Mantles Are Back with a New 7″

mickeysThere’s just something that captures your ear like a catchy good tune, and it seems like The Mantles keep pumping those sorts of tunes out. Recently they left us with the gem of an LP, Long Enough to Leave, and they’re back with a brand new 7″ that’s set to hit stores in December.  This particular tune puts more of a dreamy California spin on their sound; there’s a slight little vocal call-and-response that adds a nice dosage of pop emphasis to the track as well.  If this band hasn’t captured your ears and heart just yet, then maybe this song will do the trick for you.  Look for the 7″ via Slumberland just in time for the holiday giving of gifts.
