Last Week’s Jams (9.16 – 9.20)

A ton of new music dropped this past week, and as usual, we were on-hand to cover the stuff sliding under the radar of the cognoscenti. We had a few premieres, like the latest from UVTV, which finds the band slowing things down and exploring the shadowy tones of dreampop. I made sure to hype one of my favorite releases of the month, Mo Dotti, which I’m hoping is on the way to my doorstep any day. Still, some of our favorite labels Meritorio and Bobo Integral dropped new tunes from Slack Times and The Psych Fis, and we filled in the gaps with popular favorites like 2nd Grade and Greg Mendez, among many others. Just press play and send a thank you letter.

Abandoned Buildings Release Rabbit Holes

Having dabbled in the realms of dream pop for some time, Abandoned Buildings, for my two cents, seem to be taking on an almost classic brand of rock n’ roll; they’re bridging their dreamy realm with bits and pieces of a sound that feels like Jeff Buckley. It’s difficult to describe, but there’s roll to the track that certainly reminds me of the elegance of “Grace” by the aforementioned Buckley. Maybe I’m way off, but it brought me deep within the song, where they then turned to a lighter ambiance, floating the tune into this otherworldly realm that still feels like its circling my brain. They have a new album titled Eroding Light, and we’ll have more info as we get it!

Abandoned Buildings Share Already Over

You ever hear a simple note, something so minute yet so memorable that you can’t get it out of your head? That’s exactly how I felt upon my first listen to the latest single from Abandoned Buildings. For me, it was the the way the song just sort of dropped in at the 13 second mark; it changed the song’s whole dynamic, allowing this guitar chord to sort of skitter throughout. A simple moment that was gone, but it drew me into the song, allowing the haziness of the vocals to carry me through the song. There’s this quiet to the track, something subdued, but it’s juxtaposed by this really bright guitar that comes in and out, like around the 2 minute mark. I just dig it. This tune appears on the group’s new LP, Disappear Forever, out this week!
