Last Week’s Jams (8.19 – 8.23)

Well folks, I’m back in the game full time, teaching, coaching and all that jazz. So, I didn’t hit my previous mark of nearly 30 songs in a week. But, we still had some really great stuff on the site, so it’s organized below in its usual playlist fashion. One of the best group’s in the game, Feeling Figures, bounced out with a rad new single, plus our old pal Caroline Says also announced her first LP in some years. We gave a shout out to some great records by Fake Fruit, Chime School, Hits and more (and yes, I missed Wut and the Softies). Oh, and new jams from UV-TV and High Water Marks closed out the week, so I guess you could say, it was a pretty good time!

Abbey Blackwell Shares River or a Road

When listening to Abbey Blackwell‘s solo efforts, you’re going to get transported; her work in a sense, is reminiscent of old folk singers, like this magical crossroads between Joni Mitchell or Joan Baez on guitar with the heavy dulcet tones of Nico. It’s an enchanting place to play, with Blackwell carefully detailing our impact on loved ones, and what we leave behind in moments of separation, all of it carefully balled up beneath this ornate strum. The video below has some wonderful digitalization, bringing the sentiment in Abbey’s work to a colorful screen near you. Her album Big Big Motion is out on September 13th for those looking to disappear into an artist’s musical statement.

Last Week’s Jams (7.29 – 8.2)

Pretty sure our coverage crushed it this last week; I think there was one day where we covered ten songs in a single day! But, I’m about to end my summer break, so don’t expect that too much more. Alas, we had album shout outs for Blood, Male Gays, Aaberg, True Optimist and Teenage Tom Petties. Some of my favorite acts returned to the fold, like the Smashing Times and Pop FilterYoung Scum had a new jam, but it’s not streaming yet. Big hits from Chimers, The Gabys and the Softies kept us busy…and always nice to have a Chime School tune too! Enjoy the streams of last week’s jams!

Abbey Blackwell Shares Next Time Single

With a pedigree as a bass-player extraordinaire for acts like Alvvays and Cassandra Jenkins, it sounds like its time for Abbey Blackwell to make her own name shine, especially if she’s writing songs like the one you’ll hear below. The song tip-toes through your room, with Blackwell’s vocals just a step ahead of spoken word, clinging tightly to a bit of fragility. Unfolding through the first chorus run, the tune begins to take on a touch more flare, throwing in a slightly heavier strum and some skittering solo lines that punctuate the tune, giving it this presence that has me wrapped around its finger. Excited to hear more from Big Big Motion, out September 13th.
