Last Week’s Jams (11.10 – 11.14)

In a week where paywall was all the buzz in the indie rock world, we just did what we did. We opened the emails, we listened to the songs, and we tried to give you an idea of what you may or may not like…and we did it for free, for the love of the game! We had new music from Jason Balla aka Accessory, and the beautiful tones of Bill Callahan makes an appearance this week too! SXSW announced its first few musicians, and happy to see my homies in the All American Rejects as the opening of the festival. Club 8 offered up one of their monthly gems, while our friends at Keeled Scales announced the signing of Hiding Places. A lot to share this week, and you don’t have to pay for any of it! Enjoy!

Accessory Shares New Singles

As avowed Dehd fans, we’d be remiss if we didn’t at least shine a light on Jason Balla’s new-ish solo work as Accessory. There’s a construction similarity in the way the song’s he’s just shared sound, but in that same fashion, there’s definitely something lighter burrowing up from beneath. Each of the two tracks seems textured with imperfections and charm, starting off in this sort of solitary mode that unfurls into a great expanse of pop magnificence. “Ums” is a bit brighter than “Do You” upon first listen, but the last minute of the latter is just this blissed out expanse of indie rock you can’t ignore. Play both of these jams as much as you want, as you won’t tire here.

Accessory Share Single Announce Tour

As you probably know, we’re the definitive fans of Dehd over here at ATH, so you’d be surprised that I am late on the new tune from Jason’s solo project, Accessory. This single is a far cry from Dehd, thus why it’s craft is so intoxicating, seeing how far he stretches himself sonically. I can hear similarities to acts like Panda Bear, at least in the construction, but I also here remnants of various Spiritualized albums in this, not to mention some of the drifting slo-core albums that are upstairs on my record shelves. All this joy comes with the announcement of a brief NorthEast tour kicking off at the end of this week! Keep your eyes out; he’s coming your way!

Accessory Shares Eyes for Berlin

Accessory is the solo project of Jason Balla, who typically is found playing in Dehd, but they’re working on their sophomore LP, so Jason opted to go and record some work on his own. This tune’s got a heavy feel, primarily through the tones of Jason’s voice. That said, the thematic element of finding that “the world can be beautiful and good” shines right through the track; you can even hear it ever so slightly in Balla’s voice as the song begins to progress. No word on whether the project has long term goals, but as a fan of Dehd, and the band’s label Fire Talk, felt like it was my duty to share this with you!
