Last Week’s Jams (10.28 – 11.1)

Just when we thought the year was dragging to a close, we managed to find enough hits to fall in love with and make you a proper playlist! We even have a few of the tracks we covered from Maneater and Boyracer missing, so be sure to check those out. I loved the opening song from Prism Shores; it’s definitely a bright spot on last week, along with the reemergence of Mogwai on the scene. We managed to get in some Austin love for Whalers and Gus Baldwin and the Sketch, not to mentioned representing for the local festival with Levitation interviews from Hello Mary and the Strange Lot. Plus, our pal Michael Maly was able to swing some coverage for Air‘s 25th Anniversary performance of Moon Safari, giving me a chance to slide “Sexy Boy” into yet another playlist. Check it all out below.

Stream Adrian Marner’s Remember Yourself

Adrian Marner first popped up on our radar last year with the release of his debut The College Years; he’s got a fresh LP out today via Zerowell Records, and it feels like the perfect record to cozy up with a partner as the weather begins to change. Marner’s voice offers up this intimacy that we don’t get quite as often as we did decades ago; “Too Young to Understand” feels like he’s working his way through his thoughts and also his craft, wearing the process of both openly. “Camera 2” was a spectacular single, and it’s setting in the record drives the lonesome nature of the number right into your heart. Pair that up with closing number “The Great Escape,” and you might find yourself feeling like your revisiting the early Bright Eyes records, where imperfections charmed with sincerity; this whole record is full of those moments as Marner continues to push his songwriting. I’ve been loving “Dreamer” and “Buckle Up,” if you’re looking for numbers to start with, to kind of sample the goods. Remember Yourself is streaming below!

Last Week’s Jams (9.3 – 9.6)

Just because it was a short week doesn’t mean we couldn’t cover a whole lot of brand new music, especially since there were some unexpected returns that we didn’t know were coming, like new jams from The Green Child and The Innocence Mission. More recent favorites dropped some solid tracks for us, so check in with the latest from Best Bets, Naked Roommate and Mo Dotti. But, don’t just think it was all bangers, with the softer side coming through via Adrian Marner and Tom Emlyn. And, be sure to check in with that new Forceghost, who I’d like to apologize to for misspelling the name of their Recycled Hearts release; sorry my friends! Just press play and enjoy!

Adrian Marner Shares Dreamer Single

Those of you in search of a new singer to break your heart should have your focus on Adrian Marner and his forthcoming Remember Yourself LP. Whenever we get a new single, we run it, as we’re completely fascinated by the striking fragility that brings you within his songwriting. This go round, a light percussive piece adds just a hint of texture and movement, allowing the fragility of Marner’s voice to hang on the highest notes, soaring right to your hearts. Adrian’s one of those songwriters who won’t let you go once he’s got his hooks in you, so keep an eye out for the new LP, out November 1st via Zerowell Records.

Last Week’s Jams (5.27 – 5.31)

A strange week we had last week; I blame the Memorial Day holiday for that, as it started us all off a bit slow. For whatever reason, we didn’t get a lot of fresh tunes, so I, of course, was out there digging deep to unearth some stuff you’re probably not going to find in a ton of other spots, like the new T.G. Shand or Holding Hour singles. It was good to get another single from the next the Martial Arts LP, plus our old friend Stephen popped up with his new project Shortcuts. And, as I’ve been trying to do more, there were some great records like the new Neutrals and Oh Boland LPs I wanted to nod towards too. It’s all in the playlist below.

Adrian Marner Shares Too Young to Understand

If you’re a sucker for a distinctive vocal display, might we suggest you give a few spins to the latest single from Adrian Marner. There are moments when his delivery feels like its faltering, like there’s so much emotion he can barely contain himself; it has that fragility of early Conor Oberst works. As the the vocal steadies, he guides you with a light strum towards the chorus, where he turns the voice into something a little more angelic, stretching it into higher notes that fall perfectly when he draws out the pronunciation of “time.” Musically, there’s a classic songwriter feel, though there’s this careful attention to the supporting arrangement that gives the track just enough lift to keep the tune interesting, though it stays out of the way to let the magic of Marner’s voice shine. This tune brought to you by Zerowell Records.

Last Week’s Jams (8.21 – 8.25)

There continues to be an unreasonable amount of great music coming out nowadays, and I’m absolutely baffled at how it just never ceases; there’s been nothing but week after week of tunes for me to fawn over. This week’s a little all over the place, with a little bit of rock, a little bit of pop, a little bit of songwriter and back again. Wanted to begin with the great cover of “Rock n’ Roll” by the Feelies, then jump right into some of my favorite tracks of the week. I mean, new Tony Jay and Red Pants make all of us winners. Plus, there’s a new Lewsberg tune floating about, which I definitely have included in other playlists. And, I got back on that review game with a track by track breakdown of Holy Wave’s latest. So spend some time looking back at last week!

Album Stream: Adrian Marner’s The College Years

Adrian Marner first popped into my eras when we covered his single “Cracks of Time;” it had the sort of innocence of Elliott Smith, albeit with a bit of a more of a pop sparkle to it. This approach sticks around for the College Years, bringing you bedside as Marner works with heavy strums and a voice that wears a bit of production magic. While standout singles like “The Unsaid Goodbye” and previously mentioned “Cracks of Time” are surefire hits; I’ve found myself gravitating towards “Rock Star Fatigue” and “My Best Friend” as other stopping points for those just popping in for a quick listen. Each song has its own little charms if you dig in, and in the grand scheme, it feels like Marner is setting the scene for what could be a very promising catalog. The College Years is out today courtesy of Zerowell Records.

Last Week’s Jams (4.10 – 4.14)

Looking back at last week, there was tons of really great stuff out there, and admittedly, there are a few things we just didn’t have time to get to on our end. But, stoked for Austin, as there was great new music from Being Dead, Transy Warhol, Holy Wire and new project Feeling Small. My favorite track from the most recent Blues Laywer LP got a video treatment, so I had to have that one out. RayRay covered that huge banger from Night Beats, who will be in town for Psych Fest. And, one of my favorite SXSW acts Snooper announced their new LP too, so you get a bunch of winning hits!

Adrian Marner Shares Cracks of Time

This summer Adrian Marner will be releasing The College Years, and I’ve really been marveling at some of the singles coming from the record. His songwriting on the below single seems pretty simple, drawing on the magic of his voice; it reminds me of a strange cross between Elliott Smith and Matt Pryor, so it carries that elegant construction with the faintest hint of the emotive qualities that both those artists put into their voices. Plus, the heavy strum on the mix is something that always gets stuck in my head, as it brings in that level of intimacy that draws you into bedroom recordings and whatnot. My interest in Adrian is piqued, so I’ll be keeping an eye out for The College Years, which drops this summer via Zerowell Records.
