Stuck Announce Optimizer

When certain genres become formulaic, you have to push the sound a little bit, which is exactly what seems to be forming for Chicago’s Stuck. Their new single begins in the traditional sense of post-punk, sort of stalking the listener with the vocal work while the band lets the rhythm thunder and march in the background. Then the chorus hits, almost spastically hitting its own march, then opening to a kind of futuristic croon that has the group operating on their own territory; they double down with a pummeling close that kicks off at 2:25, rushing the sound through your speakers before wrapping things up. This tune will appear in Optimizer, running out on March 27th via Exploding in Sound.

Endearments Announce Debut LP

The year is already off to a great start for pop music, and today’s announcement from Endearments is welcome news to my ears. The Brooklyn act are playing on the softer side of indiepop, taking the dreamier moves of the genre and fleshing them out with a thumping rhythm section. Upon my first few listens to the record’s lead single, there are some sonic and structural similarities to acts like Pains of Being Pure at Heart, though they soften the edges of the distortion, offering up a more melodic center to the track. An Always Open Door will be available for you on March 6th.

Twilight Sad Share Fresh Single

Long long ago in a land we called the real Emos, I watched the Twilight Sad, enthusiastically soaking up their thunderous performance while a young man behind me snapped photos; it was here that I met our B. Gray, thus our eternal love for the Scottish outfit. Today, they follow up their recent single with Robert Smith by dropping another brooding number in order to announce their first LP in several years. This song wins me over in various ways, with my recent attraction being the tonal playfulness of James’ voice throughout the track; his control and switching back and forth completely captivate through the course of the song. Their continued evolution through the years has been quite a joy to follow, and we’re really looking forward to It’s The Long Goodbye when it arrives on March 27th via Rock Action.

Eli Carvajal Signs with Safe Suburban Home

I love when a label just falls in love with a record that may not fit our expectations, but still adheres to the label philosophy of releasing music you love, like the new pick up from Safe Suburban Home. They’ve mostly been playing with outsider pop like the new Autocamper LP (you should buy that!), but today they’ve announced the signing of Eli Carvajal, a UK artist that reminds me an awful lot of young Bon Iver. He’s got an interesting playing style using open tunings on an upside down right handed guitar (that he plays left-handed) so it creates this resonance in the notes that hits deep within your soul. There’s not too much else really added behind the strum and his voice, with only the slightest embellishment used, as there’s this clarity that sharpens the delivery, digging its hooks deep in the listener. Eyen Forever is out on October 3rd.

Alexei Shishkin Announces Good Times

Spent last night at a bar called Good Times, so waking up to the announcement of a new record from Alexei Shishkin of the same name seems serendipitous. And, with that announcement comes this great tune, filling us in on the promise of Alexei’s forthcoming work. He’s operating with the perfect balance, if you ask me, as the track carefully plods in with some light notes, setting the backdrop for the tune. He fills that in with a bit of a bolder noise, pushing the sonic level way up high in a way that reminds me of a modern twist on some of the early Grandaddy LPs. Good Times will be released by Rue Defense on September 5th.

Golden Apples Announces Shooting Star

I love waking up to a bunch of really rad tunes, and today seems to be in our favor, as we now get this rad tune from Golden Apples, announcing the group’s new LP. The press release says their new album draws from a fusion between the sounds of Karen Dalton and Yo La Tengo, so obviously that’s going to scratch all the itches, musically. For me, the vocals really drew me in here, letting the sort of noise billow all around my ears whilst still keeping me focused; they’re kind of whispering, with some layers thrown atop one another while guitars buzz and explode in the background. It’s a balance between noise and joy, and I’m just going to sit here and put it on repeat for a few rounds. Shooting Star will drop via Lame-O on September 19th.

 

Retail Drugs Announce rECKless dRIVing

I was super into the last jam we heard from NYC project Retail Drugs, and today we get the great news that there’s a new LP on the way titled rECKless dRIVing…out on August 1st via Angel Tapes/Fire Talk. This song allows songsmith Jake Brooks to slowly manipulate the guitar sound, letting it embrace some of the popular melodic notes of the post-punk genre; Brooks pokes hols in the tune with this mysterious vocal, barely audible above the mix. Before you reach the 1 minute mark, the song begins to kind of hum with feedback, erupting into this shattering bash of noise that pushes the expectations of bedroom pop.

Anna Tivel Announces Animal Poem

If you are going to announce a brand new album, you better come out swinging like Anna Tivel has with the title track from her forthcoming Animal Poem. The lyrical content alone plays with juxtaposition in such a striking fashion, and yet I continue to sort of get stuck on the “you breathe/then you’re not breathing,” though I suspect that’s my own anxieties of the world shining through. All of it, even its commentary on how difficult it is to be someone who loves are delivered in such a careful fashion that you can feel yourself sort of traipsing through the song as each syllable rolls off her tongue. Musically, the shooting star of a guitar line at 1:29 totally broke me, in the best possible manner. Cannot wait to see how the rest of the record unfolds for listeners; Animal Poem drops August 29th via Fluff & Gravy Records.

Dancer Return with More or Less

Dancer are not wasting any time at all with their career; they dropped their debut a little over a year ago, followed by a split EP with Whisper Hiss, and now they’re back with More or Less. Their first single opens with this jagged post-punk guitar, harkening to their early work, but that sort of evaporates, leaving a brighter sound in the ear of listeners. Gemma Fleet’s voice has this sharpness, spiking lyrical lines as she makes her way in-between the bass grooves. Still, they’re not abandoning their edge in favor of pop, as you’ll see at the 1:23 mark when the song carries the pop sensibility on its back as it descends into a punctuated moment of musical madness; Fleet’s “just say yes” hits hard, affirming the group’s ability to flirt with both punk and pop, more or less. There’s so much attitude and flair in this one track, it’s going to be hard to contain all that goodness in one LP, though we’ll find out how they do it when More or Less drops on September 12th via Meritorio Records.

Smut Announce Tomorrow Comes Crashing

Cinncinatti’s Smut aren’t a new act on the scene, but we’re expecting that their new Tomorrow Comes Crashing LP takes them to the heights of like-minded acts like Beths or Cherry Glazer. All the aforementioned acts, and this lot, take on a women-first mentality, using lyrical content to deal with the continuous bullshit the world throws at them; in this case, Smut takes on the concept of “being misunderstood by people who don’t even know you.” Success doesn’t just live on the lyrics, however, as the band behind Tay Roebuck are crushingly powerful, ripping distorted walls of guitar and churning out little hooks within while the thunderous drums dare to break your ear drums. Be sure to wait for the metal-ish breakdown in the last minute of the tune! Tomorrow Comes Crashing is out on June 27th via Bayonet Records.
