The Bankees Are Back

I’m not sure if this is just a world of circumstance coming together or if the Bankees will reunite in full, but I’m glad the band is back with their new mini-album, The Family Man…even if only for a minute. While on hiatus, the members of the band had families, fell in love and moved forward in their life after toiling in the music world for some time; these songs all reflect those moments, building their new lives into new songs. Musically, the songs are light and hopeful, employing the band’s knack for using harmony and touching on the various indie elements we all love. Enjoy their new album…and hope that even if their appearances are brief, that they’re always coming back to give us more.

Premiere: New Album from Dreamboat + Release Show

dreamboaAustin’s Dreamboat have been kicking out pop tunes around the city for the last few years, and they’re set to release their new album, Loose Tooth, tomorrow. When listening through these new tracks, I think my favorite bit is the strength of the diversity within the collection. Mary Bryce has this huge bold voice, buton “Neighborhood Bar” she gets to play the balancing harmony; it doesn’t hurt that this tune also sounds like a campfire celebration. Of course, the sultry pop hit of “Spent the Day Lying in Bed” is a great place to spend some repeated plays; you’ll definitely love the way the guitar chords dance around. Personally, “New England” is my personal jam, but I’ll let you press play on the stream below to find your favorite.

The band celebrate the release of Loose Tooth tomorrow at band member Jake’s house. Message them for details!

Premiere: Smile Release New Album

smileYou might recognize a few faces from the Smile posse, sharing members with local posters, Dreamboat. But, don’t use that to make your basis for the band’s sound, with the group here flexing their musical muscles and creating musically dense compositions. Each track on Like a Diamond in the Rough, You Shine seems like it’s own mini-concept album; songs take twists and turns, though always relying upon the group’s dynamic pop sensibility. For my two cents, I think the journey, and flip side, of “Must Be Something 1 & 2” are easily worth your time, with one side hitting hard and the other letting you venture off into your own world. If you’re looking for a new band that adds a little bit of sunshine to art-pop, then delve into this listen right now.

The group release the album on Friday with a secret special house party. Hit them up to find out where!

Stream No Museums New Album, The Drifting Knives

nomuseumsJust a few weeks ago we brought you one of the brand new tracks from No Museums, and now the time is here for you to stream the new record, The Drifting Knives. Some of the track are slow burning indie rock tunes, letting you settle in with good quality songwriting. But, I’d also advise listening to a track like “The Months,” which is built more around a muddied guitar strum and really soft vocal touch. It’s my favorite track today as I listen, but with this band, I love it all, so I’ll likely find another favorite tomorrow. This is one of those artists that I wish more people would spend time with, so now is your chance to enjoy a great Monday listen.

Stream Baby Lucy’s Self-Titled LP

01 - Baby Lucy Album Art LP Jacket Front CoverEarlier this year we brought you several hits from Houston’s Baby Lucy, and now you have the chance to enjoy the entirety of the LP before it’s released to the masses tomorrow. Sure, you can jump right to the hits like “We Are” and “Modern Man,” but I implore you to listen to the careful pop gems hiding within the album. There’s lots of musical touchstones, demonstrating the wide variety of influences…take the super intimate “Float Away” or the bouncing hooks in the opener “Going Backwards”…and you’re sure to find joy somewhere within the confines of this listen. The LP is being released by Roofus and Friends, so be sure to head HERE and grab a copy.

Stream the New Freshcard Album

freshcardI’ve really been looking forward to the release of the new Freshcard LP, Sunday Night, especially after playing the album’s opening track a million or so times (that’s not hyperbole!). The entire listen if filled with carefully crafted pop tunes…some seem like traditional indiepop fare while others have shades of lounge pop. I feel like you’re probably getting inundated with tons of new music this week, so I wanted to offer you something casually refreshing. If you’re just looking to sample, I suggest “Friends,” “Party” and “Find a Way.”

Stream New/Old Unhappybirthday

unhappyPlease please please listen to this new/oldUnhappybirthday. I’ve been browsing the Interwebs forever and never found a thing I liked until I stumbled upon this one here..via the always reliable Kingfisher Bluez. This record, Schauer, was recorded in the bedroom, and it definitely has that aesthetic, at least in the vocals. Musically, however, there’s a real vibrancy that shines through the confines of one’s bedrooms, crafting pop songs you can take with you anywhere you go. Remember when you loved Blank Dogs? This is just as cool, if not cooler. But, if you’re one of those that caught on early, and already jammed this out, it has a new song on this edition, making it worthy. Besides, why not listen to good music today?

I Blew It: Dean Wells New Project, The Astounds

astoundsDean Wells writes jams. He wrote jams as Capstan Shafts and Rare High, among others, but now he’s working under the name, The Astounds. The group quietly released their self-titled LP earlier this year and I completely had no idea! But, now that I’ve found it, and see it’s streaming, I’m going to play the shit out of it all day long…I hope you do. It combines bits of lo-fi with classic guitar pop, and always leaves you with memorable hooks you won’t be able to pull away from. Seems like the perfect way to spend this Hump Day…join me?

Stream Tim Chaplin’s Derelicting

timA while back Tim Chaplin floated into my life, and I was grateful. Even more so now that he’s released his new album, Derelicting. The great thing about your listen is that you’ll never grow weary of the same old same old, as each song takes a little bit of a turn. Some tracks offer bits of psychedelic sound experiment, while others wear touches of classic 60s pop…other tunes step up the glam. There’s a little bit of something for everyone, and in accomplishing that, Tim’s quietly crafted a record that can be played front to back…that’s an all too uncommon occurrence. Luckily, you can do just that below!

Stream Shy Mirror’s When Nothing Is Next

shymirrorsA few months back I was excited for you to hear new music from Shy Mirrors, Sweden’s latest purveyors of great poppy punk rock. Now you can stream the entirety of When Nothing Is Next, their latest album. It’s almost like a pop version of Guided by Voices, employing a lot of similar guitar sounds, only with larger hooks for listeners…akin to Austin’s Slow. There’s not a song on this whole record that I didn’t enjoy, and with short tracks, it’s easy to fall in love, then press repeat to start enjoying yourself all over again. Stream it below and get you some!
