Last Week’s Jams (4.29 – 5.3)

Well, I somehow managed to break the streak! This week we only have 23 songs to offer instead of the customary 28 per that last four weeks! Alas, I was sick, so were my kids, and a few of the tunes weren’t streaming. So, what did we cover? The good stuff. I was blown away and waxing nostalgic with the new Royal Headache announcement and accompanying single. It was good to see acts like Oh Boland, Neutrals and Stephen’s Shore give me my pop goodies. Plus, Austin powerhouses Urban Heat and Font were out there backing up hype with great new singles. Oh, and did you catch out great Rock n’ Recipe feature with R.E. Seraphin? Well, there’s still plenty to digest below, so enjoy yourselves!

Alexei Shishkin Shares Bermuda Single

Alexei Shishkin has decided that 2024 will be the year he just keeps writing and writing; he’s already released Dagger this past February, and is now on the way to release Open Door Policy this summer. Today, we’re offering you “Bermuda,” which has Shishkin offering up a bit of twang and a sprinkle of stomp that feels like a canoe race around some tropical island. Personally, I love how Shishkin just completely avoids tradition by ignoring the chorus moment; it feels like its in there musically, but he leaves it lyric free to kind of lock in the overall feel of the song, both nostalgic and exploratory. If, like me, you’re a fan of Alexei’s work, keep an eye out for his 10th LP, Open Door Policy, out June 28th via Candlepin Records.

Enjoying the New Alexei Shishkin

As much as we wish we could cover it all, you’re bound to miss a thing here or there, which is why I wanted to be sure you checked in on the latest release from Alexei Shishkin. Despite Shishkin’s known allegiance to the Doug Martsch songwriting academy, I really think he’s stretched himself into some territory that puts him nearer towards the likes of Jeffrey Lewis or Calvin Johnson, especially if you take the single below as an example. It’s got this DIY aesthetic that you’ll pick up on immediately, but the wordplay and wit has this subtle charm that should keep you coming back to Goodbye Sunrise.

Good Vibes from Alexei Shishkin

alexeiIf at some point today you need a few minutes to yourself to just look out the window and let your mind drift, I suggest you play this new single from Alexei Shishkin as you do it. It’s a pretty soft moment, but one that really provides the mood for searching for a moment for inner piece. At times, it’s almost as if Alexei is hiding his voice in the mix, allowing it to be just another emotional tool within the confines of the track itself. Just as you feel yourself immersed fully within the song, it fades out. You’re rested, you’re ready for the day. You should also be ready for his new album, Yucca Street, being put out by Forged Artifacts on February 19th.

Have You Heard the New Alexei Shishkin

alexeiA few weeks ago we talked to you about the new Forged Artifacts artist Alexei Shishkin, and now we’ve got yet another tune to really get you inside the songwriter’s head.  On the latest single Alexei seems to turn his focus into the lyrical content, lamenting the loss of a life near the ocean.  It’s interesting when you put that next to our modern world where we’re all seemingly too caught up to catch a breath, so I can empathize with Shishkin’s longing for a slower pace to life. Take a listen and look for The Dog Tape to appear in April.

Take a Listen to Alexei Shishkin

alexeiThis track from Alexei Shishkin got passed my way yesterday, and it took a second for the song to sink in, but once it got there, I couldn’t stop playing it.  It’s really chilled, with just a little bit of a warped sound coming off the careful guitar work.  Shishkin has somewhat of a spoken word delivery, but it’s got a smooth touch that really warms to the listeners ears. There’s also something quite familiar about that vocal, though I can’t quite put my finger on it.  He’ll be releasing his debut album, the dog tape, this April via Forged Artifacts.
