Last Week’s Jams (8.4 – 8.8)

All apologies are owed this week, as our playlist is rather short. I’m not sure if that’s because I’m trying to dig for the stuff not getting covered on the ‘Gum or just a slow news week the last few outings. Nonetheless, we were high on lots of rad Austin (and adjacent tunes); we had new stuff from Gus Baldwin, Day Friend, Alien Eyelid, San Gabriel and a new video from Moonkill…all repping the city/state fairly well. New Weakened Friends seems to have gathered the big hitters, especially with that Buckethead link-up! Would suggest checking out the Maura Weaver tune we premiered, but you do you folks!

Alien Eyelid Share Nesadel Club

While I know that its easy to pigeonhole Alien Eyelid as a sort of cosmic Americana purveyor, they always feel like a bit more than that, to me. Sure, there’s a mixture of psychedelia with their country twang, both sort of meandering and melding as one wholesome unit. But, listening to the vocals, there’s this indie rock history in the tones, which surely date back to the various members working in the Houston scene; you can hear the longing and searching for horizons as the notes are belted out in the first 30 seconds. Still, however you want to call it, they manage to stretch their tunes into this masterfully painted landscape that will have you coming back to check their new album, Vinegar Hill, dropping on September 5th.

Last Week’s Jams (6.30 – 7.4)

It was a shortened work, so we crammed in a good 20 tracks to get you covered in the newest and coolest from “the underground.” Really loved some of the stuff coming out of the West Coast, like new Galore and The Wind-Ups; Texas had some decent representation too, with new Teethe, The Stayres, Alien Eyelid and Nuclear Daisies tunes making their way onto the playlist. Old favorites Quality Used Cars and the Radio Field made solid returns, and I found myself super stoked to have stumbled upon Madrone (whom you should all check out immediately). Dig in and see if there’s something rad you love…and if so let us know!

Alien Eyelid Announce Vinegar Hill

While the drop in from the new Alien Eyelid track is instantaneous, you’ve definitely got to stick around to hear the Houston outfit flex their songwriting chops; they take the immediacy and then completely move away as the whole tune meanders towards the ten minute mark. Those first three minutes embrace a Texas nostalgia, using bending guitars and a proper bit of twang to pull in some country flavor through the lends of indie rock. The latter half of the track jumps off into a big of an expanse of musical exploration, displaying the group’s more communal approach to songwriting this go round. Vinegar Hill will drop on September 5th.

Last Week’s Jams (1.8 – 1.12)

While it may have only been a four day week in terms of work, we made sure we made the best of it for you, bringing you a slew of hot indie rock bangers. Slumberland had a great week, dropping new music from Umbrellas, and introducing us to Torrey too! We were stoked to share a new video from the BVs as well, flipping their style a bit to tease you with what’s in store going forward. Some Texas love for Infinites and Alien Eyelid was a must, with an added bonus being that our friends in Pale Lights dropped a compilation of rarities and singles on Friday. Stream below and find something to adore.

Alien Eyelid Share Brand New 7″

If you happened to stumble upon my favorite albums of last year, then you would have hopefully noticed that Alien Eyelid‘s Bronze Star made the cut; they return today with a brand new 7″ that you’re going to want to grab right away. “I Didn’t Mean To” is a country twanger, and I swear that the tune’s built around the chorus melody from Four Non Blondes hit “What’s Up.” An emphatic boogie breaks out about a minute into the tune, putting the musicianship on full display. “Not Ready Yet” brings about a nice ballad vibe with guitar sliding between the dual vocal work, occasionally dropping in a barroom stomp to provide movement for the listener. Both these stellar tunes can be found on the new 7″, which you can order today by jumping over to Tall Texan Records.

Top Albums for Nathan

Honestly, I thought about foregoing a year-end list this year. I mean, if you read our site, you know what we love. But, list making can be fun, especially if you really really love music. My criteria was simple, and not based on what I think is “best,” but rather looking at the stuff I listened to the most, and eventually bought (or was gifted). Popular locals for my Nathan Wrapped have me living on an island in between San Francisco and Australia; label of the year would be Trouble in Mind (congrats to Bill and family!); genre would be: most awesome. Again, this is one man’s personal tastes, take it for what its worth.

Alien Eyelid Share Where Elgin Bends

Alien Eyelid is a band made up of Texas music veterans from various genres, but the more we get to hear from their debut LP, the more I’m totally enamored by their performance. This new single has these sparkling tones, playing upon the fascination with Western sounds, but there’s something far more elegant in the craft; the arrangements add these delicate touches that bend in and out of the tune, creating this depth that sets up the vocals. I won’t lie, I nearly cried when I hit that chorus, especially as it has that special set up from the vocals in the verse, then drops into this brilliant bit of cuddly warmth. Can’t say enough great things about this song, or this album; Bronze Star is out this Friday.

Last Week’s Jams (3.27 – 3.31)

For some reason I felt like we were nursing a SXSW hangover, just a week later than normal. But, in all that, still found tons of great tunes to write about and share. Good to see personal faves like Lachlan Denton and Greg Mendez popping up (with that Greg tune getting tons of love), plus some videos from the likes of Low Praise and 7ebra gave us a chance to revisit some singles we’d been keeping an eye on. Also, some local love for Troller and Houston’s Alien Eyelid, so trying to keep it Texas ya’ll. Stream on!

Alien Eyelid Announce Bronze Star

There are a lot of records that people will define as a purely Texan sound, but having been born and raised in these here parts, sometimes a tune just clicks with you, just feels wholly Texan. That said, Alien Eyelid aren’t aiming to be purely Texan I’m sure, though that bleeds through the band’s work in this new single. There’s a matter-of-fact delivery, which recalls any number of Texas songwriters, with something in the guitars feeling like they’re fueled by the slow-burning embers of a friendly campfire amongst friends; it’s a warm sound that feels familiar and ever-present. The band will release Bronze Star on May 5th via Tall Texan.
