Last Week’s Jams (2.19 – 2.23)

With a holiday squeezed in, and some craziness on my own end, we maybe didn’t cover as much as I ideally would have liked to cover. Nonetheless, there was tons of great tunes running on the site, including a premiere from 40th Parallel, plus brand spanking new music from Apollo Ghosts…which I’m still listening to right now. Rural France is back too, so we included that in our coverage, not to mention the fact that we got a hot new Daniel Romano tune included. You can never go wrong either with new Reds, Pinks and Purples or En Attendant Ana…and those are included. It’s a 45 minute collection of solid rock n’ roll, so turn it on and turn it up.

Apollo Ghosts Release Surprise Amethyst EP

If you didn’t grab a copy of 2022’s Pink Tiger LP from Apollo Ghosts, then you missed an absolute masterpiece, so I was really excited to open up my email to a surprise EP from the Vancouver vets. In a lot of ways, they remind me most recently of Lewsberg, sort of working with these delectable guitar treats you want to devour, while the vocals seemingly work in contrast to that energy. I can also hear lots of nods to acts like Yo La Tengo and Sonic Youth, but spun in a more kind of organic indie fashion, so obviously I adore that. “Strawberry Moon” is my jam right now, so don’t skip it. Stream all of Amethyst below!

Last Week’s Jams, Today (3.21-3.25)

Been a hot minute since we compiled all our weekly jams into one nice little playlist for you, but here we are again, wrapping up last week on a Monday. We’ve got tons of great jams in store, with some of the latest releases also featured. Austin gets some love, with singles/videos from Letting Up Despite Great Faults, Queen Serene and Blood (kind of/sort of). We also ran some new videos from the likes of Red Pants and Breakup Haircut, not to mention the newest jams from Jeanines and Say Sue Me…so you know, this playlist is going to be your jams.

Listen to Spilling Yr Guts from Apollo Ghosts

Vancouver’s Apollo Ghosts are a band I’d definitely like you to get into, particularly as I myself just recently discovered the band and their new LP, Pink Tiger. Taking on the latest single, the band hit hard with this sound that’s reminiscent of Sonic Youth, using that snaking guitar line to set up the central melody for the vocals. That voice, takes on a more soothing tone, something that certainly wouldn’t have been out of place on a Pavement album. And you’re reading this, thinking its all nostalgia, but the execution and mixture of various 90s guitar sounds feels as fresh as a batch of daisies. Plus, they get bonus points for using “fuckall” as a lyric. Check out Pink Tiger today!

Last Week’s Jams, Today (1.24 – 1.28)

It’s always great to start out the week by looking back upon the week that was, and while perhaps not an abundance of tunes like there was the previous week, there was definitely great musical news. Papercuts announced a new LP, with two new songs from the record, and both are here for fun below! Plus, Finnish outfit Rules dropped a new single, and I just can’t stop raving about Lewsberg and Apollo Ghosts. And somehow it all gets wrapped up with a new Ducks Ltd single? I’ll take it. Revisit last week with us!

Apollo Ghosts Share Pink Tiger Video

Ever come across a song that seems to be the score for the every-person? The brand of pop songwriting that feels like as soon as it comes on; everyone’s pulled in, lightly bobbing heads and tapping toes; this is the tune you’re going to hear below from Apollo Ghosts. In a way, it seems like its got an omnipresent sound, something complex tied to folk stylings of the late 60s, though its definitely modernized with its arrangements and wordplay. I don’t know…maybe it sounds like a less Norwegian Kings of Convenience, but you’re going to find solace here. I mean, listen in at 1:41; I live for moments like that. The band will release Pink Tiger on March 11th via You’ve Changed Records.
