Show Pics: Knifight Release Party @ Cheer Up’s (2/6)

Upload Knifight Release 04We are championing the locals. One of the bands we love is Knifight and while we sometimes think a few locals play too many shows, we cannot accuse Knifight of over-saturation. When we get a chance, we usually take it. Gothy, gazy, noisy, wavey, industrial and bad-ass, the band has a new album out, seven tracks that are given space to breathe progress.

To celebrate the album, Cheer Up hosted a show with GOST and ATH faves Night Drive to dance in the night. Head past the break and get a few thoughts and the usual batch of pics.

Smooth Song From Aphex Twin

10629809_10152385483439952_4360575686812864847_nIf you don’t own Selected Ambient Works 85-92, get thee to a nunnery.

I put an Aphex Twin song on my end of year playlist. The new EP lands tomorrow courtesy of Bleep, Computer Controlled Acoustic Instruments Pt. 2, but you can get a freebie today.

This song is “Diskhat” blah blah blah and can be downloaded. It is also a very accessible version of Aphex Twin. Pleasing.

Show Preview: Slow Magic @ Red7 (1/22)

Date 1/22

Location Red 7
Doors 9pm?
Tickets $3 with RSVP

Orthy has been in the studio. Will we get a bunch of new jams? Hopefully.

Red Bull Sound Select hopes that by bringing Slow Magic through town you will get silly with locals Orthy and Dallas’s Dark Rooms. Slow Magic had a jam on our Best of 2014 so we’re good with it. The weather may suck, but let’s dance a little.

We know Orthy pretty well, so here is a sample from Dark Rooms. Hope you dig it.

ATH Interview & Show Pics: Midge Ure

Midge UreMidge Ure came to Austin to do one of his rather rare solo acoustic shows. With his first release in twelve years finally out to the public, the pioneer in electronically tinged pop had new material to revitalize a fan base that is still in love with the classics from previous solo efforts, Visage and, most importantly, Ultravox. I took advantage of the trip in to get a quick email interview done before the show at Cactus Cafe.

Head on past the break to read a Q&A covering the many projects, life as a solo artist and even a little bit on being the guy behind Band-Aid along with coverage of the show and plenty of pics. Ladies and Gentlemen, Midge Ure…

Have a Nice Weekend

1962514_636580363075782_1160625406_oThe weather has lifted. That bright thing is the sun. Prepare for the cedar onslaught.

Here is a lovely little PYAITK jam from a band called Sego. I was checking out another little news bit about a Kitsune Maison release that is pending when a little trip to their Soundcloud to see what’s doing yielded a play of this song below. It is called “Wicket Youth”. Dig it.

Midge Ure is a name you should know, but you may not despite the iconic voice and contributions to music. Ultravox, Visage, solo albums, collaborations on so many things including producing and writing that little Band-Aid thing thirty years ago. Little known fact, he played all but the drums for that song (Phil Collins put down that track).

Anyway, Midge is playing an acoustic set at Cactus Cafe Sunday. I am excited. His 2004 album is on slow-burn in my catalog, lots of variety there and some real gems, dark to pop. Allegedly, there will be stories told and songs old and new. “Fade to Grey” is a desert island song for me. Pretty, pretty, pretty excited.

Here is a track from the last solo album called Fragile.

Happy New Year from the IT Dept.

CaribouI promised a set of songs from the IT Department for your evening’s happenings. It has dance jams and down-tempo smoothness. It has stuff that was in our best of the year list and stuff that you may be hearing for the first time. Whether you use this for good or evil is up to you. Almost two hours, so plan accordingly…

While trolling for song links, I saw that Roger Sellers has a super fresh version of “Auld Lang Syne” up featuring The Deer. How cool its that? Naturally, it is batting clean up as the final spot on this list with the New Year’s theme. Enjoy your New Year’s with old friends, new friends *wink* and maybe even family. I prefer fambly.

May 2015 be better than 2014. Be you…

Have A Nice Weekend

avatars-000108090749-xgydxe-t500x500I’ll be processing photos of the Merchandise show last night on the plane. I land late. That’s my Friday night, but after that, pizza party and catching up on my shows from the week. Jealous, right? What are your plans? Tell on the Bookface or the Tweets.

Richmond is pretty. They have this thing called “fall”. It is really neat. It is like this thing we call “winter”.

So google this “Don’t Tell Zebra”. Watch the funny video. More importantly, listen to the jam by Mansions On The Moon embedded below about what happened last night and make it your weekend anthem. #cantremembershit #party

Show Pics: Washed Out @ The Mohawk (9/9)

Washed OutThis was pretty much a double headliner show for me. The first time I saw both of the bands that played last night at The Mohawk, Small Black and Washed Out, they played overlapping sets during a SxSW day party, the former backing the latter. Fast forward many years and we are reliving those glory days of buzz and free bandanas.

SOLD OUT!

Sweaty date-night dance party!
