Have a Nice Weekend With Lou Rebecca and Night Drive

It has been a pretty good week of electronic jams. From the new Fever Ray today to Bayonne’s latest to the Korine track. All solid offerings. Maybe you should just resolve to shimmy all weekend with this cooler weather. It is finally fall. LCD Soundsystem out at COTA seems a good way to spend Halloween. I am hoping my skwuad can rock our onesies. If you see a platypus, perhaps with a camera, say hi.

I will leave everyone with one last bit of electro-pop goodness. It is from French-born, part-time local Lou Rebecca, who with Josh Mills on programming and keys, has been turning out wonderfully crafted French disco. Holodeck picked up the pending release and we now have a full shimmy-inducing slice of heaven following the more thoughtfully subdued and bilingual lead single from the S/T EP.

Almost forgot. Our friends Night Drive have a video out for “Trapeze Artist Regrets”. Check it.

Brand New Single from Bayonne

Oh Roger Sellers, you’ve got a habit of making great pop music. It’s been a minute since Bayonne (Roger’s stage name) officially released Primitives, but now we have a slight glimmer of what’s to come from the multi-instrumentalist. What I love about this new song is that it doesn’t feel like a typical composition; it almost feels like the product of a full band working in the studio, rather than the genius of just one man. Pop fans will surely appreciate the construction, especially when it comes to those vocal melodies that seem to rise from the mix. Who knows when we’ll get more from Bayonne, but for now, this great tune will suffice.

Tasty Electropop from Korine

B. Gray is going to be so jealous that I stumbled onto this new collection of electro hits from Korine. The Philly band just released their latest Corsage, and man, it’s definitely going to hit home for those of you in love with the 80s club sound. I think my personal favorite of the tracks is “Sweet Mystery,” rocking the darker tones of the synth vibe. Admittedly, it’s nothing out of the ordinary when it comes to the genre, but sometimes the execution is all that matters…and they do it perfectly in these 5 tracks. Give it a listen.

Have A Nice Weekend

It is ACL again. I am going sans long lens and will be actually listening to bands with Nathan and an entire squad of randoms that come in town from round this great country. Get of my blanket, football in the beer tent, occasional runs to the front of the crowd to get sweaty and be dumb – festival things. We do get Day Wave.

UT/OU ManU/Liverpool #COYS

On to a shareable jam. Here is a lovingly crafted piece of synth pop by Empathy Test that has that darker vibe followed by that last-song-on-the-Depeche-Mode-record that had just a slightly uplifting message. The full length, Safe From Harm, is due November 17th.

Get To Know Choir Boy

Inspiration is sourced from experience. For Adam Klopp, an early education in religion and some life-changing moves made for a foundation to launch his project called Choir Boy. Along with Chaz Costello, whom you may know from Human Leather, this dreamy and slightly dark synth pop out of Salt Lake City has a driving undelrine that runs things as Adam’s vocal range and strong yet elegant warble guides the listener through a coming of age story. I dig. Listen.

Order up the single over at Dais Records.

A Challenge From John Maus

Do you like your pop music quirky? You anti-synths? You want to hear what happens when electronic foundations are slightly shaken to provide flourishes of syncopation from analog devices? It really is the break at around the two minute mark and instrumental bits that follow that won me, so hang in if on the fence.

Just check out this track from John Maus. The new record, Screen Memories, lands 10/27 on Domino. It can be ordered individually or as part of a six LP box.

TR/ST Flexes On You

It was SxSW a few years back and I had just seen TR/ST for the third time. Having exchanged pleasentries side stage at Mohawk and in passing during the week, I worked up the nerve to ask for a quick portrait. His immediate response was, “No.” Magical moment. Right?

TR/ST, aka Trust, aka Robert Alfons, has captivated mindshare since I happened across “Candy Walls” six years ago. I think I listened to it seven times, over and over. It led the way for the record TRST in 2012 that still gets pretty heavy rotation in my house. It has been three years since Joyland and it is about time for a new track. And here it is. I planned on making this part of a have a nice weekend post, but it is too good. Maybe I was just tired and brain-fried when I listened to it yesterday, but damn. He tells Fader that “Bicep” is about “…the struggle between accepting and resisting shame, as well as an expression of sexual fantasies.” Perhaps, but this is brilliantly dark and danceable, just as you’d expect with that familiar edge lurking in the waveforms.

We’ll be waiting impatiently until 2018 for the new record.
