Brigitte Calls Me Baby Announce Irreversible

When I’m listening and watching this new video from Brigitte Calls Me Baby, I’ll admit, I’m approaching it with a bit of trepidation. First, I love the sound; I love the sonics and the way you can trace the lineage to acts like Orange Juice. The rapid drum and cymbal work has this rhythmic pull that even the most hip human couldn’t avoid digging. That said, there’s some elements of this video and the band’s pomp and hairdos that remind me of the Killers. Am I being tricked? Is this too saccharine for longevity? I want to be free and fall in love with this song, but I’ll have to wait for more singles from their new LP, Irreversible…it arrives on March 13th via ATO Records.

If you have yet to be caught up in the hype surrounding They Are Gutting a Body of Water, you’ll be pleased to know that this is one of the rarer instances where the hype is fitting. They greet you with a trickle of guitar, then they break the door down with a wall of feedback and distortion, quietly sneaking vocals in behind the barrage of melodic noise. Once the tune opens, the guitars dance carefully, almost as if they’re careful of stepping on the vocal portion of the tune; the group gets to hang hear before riding another crest of noise to the close. Their new LP, Lotto, will be out on October 17th.

As a comfort eater myself, the thematic element in the new track from They Are Gutting a Body of Water is something I can relate to, as we all seek comfort and vice in our own ways. But, I also turn to music, which is where the band continue to branch into territories that push expectations and classification beyond their peers. Their guitar lines this go round are pretty simple, kind of bringing the rhythm out as this twanging piece that gets to hang in the air with all the other indie rock acts. But, behind there’s another faint guitar line, not to mention loads of sampled and digitalization in the studio that shows them fucking around completely with our modern formula. It’s brilliant to see them employing everything and not sounding at all like they’re just phoning it in! This track also comes with the announcement of their signing to ATO Records/Smoking Room/Julia’s War.

Pachyman Shares SJU Single

Pachyman is going home, or at least he’s making an homage to Puerto Rico, thus the song’s reference to the San Juan Airport. I’m really looking forward to Another Place, his latest record, as it seems like he blends the sound into something really special each time a release comes our way. This little dub track takes a bit of guitar and stretches it into a vibe that just feels like the hippest strut you’ve ever seen, but at the same time, there’s this indifferent cool that lets you know the world is going to be alright. If you’re willing to take a trip into the cool waters of Pachyman, grab Another Place from ATO Records on Friday!

New Jam from Adrian Quesada (and Hermanos Gutierrez)

I love how far reaching Adraian Quesada is willing to go as he pushes towards the release of Boleros Psicodelicos II; he has worked with pop stars like Cuco and now pulls in Hermanos Gutierrez on his latest track, illustrating his aim to shine a light on artists and music alike. But, where the early two singles had vocals fill your speakers, this one is purely instrumental, taking a little bit of the soulful Latin style and knitting into the fabric of Spaghetti Western structures. The adaptation is light, with these little notes kind of popping while the guitar operates with its lonesome weeping; there’s even this sort of haunting ambiance floating across if you listen in real closely. Remember, the new LP is out on June 27th via ATO Records.

Adrian Quesada and Angelica Garcia Share No Juego

Boleros Psicodelicos was chock-full of bangers, and so expectations for BP II is already high, especially with the debut single that featured Cuco. This round, Adrian Quesada has employed Angelica Garcia as his accompaniment, and in doing so, knocked another one out of the park. This track feels entirely cinematic, something ripped straight from a Tarantino film, and that matches perfectly with the video version accompanying the track. In some way, it also feels like a Latin gangster film, with our singer giving out warning to those in attendance that our singer “no juego” (doesn’t play games), only adding to the theatrical element the tune encompasses. It’s another smoking hot track that has me doubling down on Boleros Psicodelicos II, which drops on June 27th via ATO Records.

Pachyman Drops Another New Single

New Adrian Quesada and new Pachyman? Clearly, I’m going to be operating with the world’s most chilled vibe today, especially as I sink into this Pachyman jam. He’s combining his love of dub and the chugging rhythm of the guitar with a bit of space-age industry. His vocal samples here are perfect, like little faint echoes you might hear bouncing down the hallways from afar. And sure, those little dub grooves rip, but I love the little synthetic notes and how they take the style and make it feel remarkably fresh. Then you hook it with the video where all you get is smiles, and I can absolutely not turn this one off! Another Place will be out on ATO Records on May 23rd.

Adrian Quesada Announce Boleros Psicodelicos II

I completely realize I’m going to come across like a jerk-store here, but I 100% love Adrian Quesada‘s solo stuff more than the Black Pumas; I know that’s sacrilegious, but just calling it like I see it. I was gifted an early listen to this fresh track from Boleros Psicodelicos II, which features Cuco, and I’ve pretty much been playing it non-stop. For starters, Cuco’s voice is just ridiculous here; it doesn’t feel out of place in a classic bolero sense, and in fact, almost seems like the genre was built just for him. But, that wouldn’t work if there wasn’t this incendiary blend of synthetic keys, percussion and guitar, all thrown together in this masterful fashion that almost makes it feel like the score to an unwritten Robert Rodriguez vampire movie, yet totally pop at the same time! I freaking love it, and am excited to hear all of Boleros Psicodelicos II when it drops on June 27th via ATO Records. Now, if I can only convince him to do his take on Chicha, then we’ve got a party!

Pachyman Announces Another Place

It always amazes me that for all the risks and adjacent vibes that course through Pachyman‘s sound that he doesn’t get loads of love from the indie rock cognoscenti. With the announcement of a new record, pushing his sound further into textural dub, he’s got this bumping new single, burrowing into your soul with its repetitive nature. And yet, you never tire, as the song’s builds and spins, ultimately feeling like a collection of break-beats from your favorite old school hip-hop DJ. And that’s the thing with his work, as it stretches here and there, and yet always feels like something magical and close to his core. Looking forward to Another Place; it drops on May 23 via ATO Records.

Friko Share Get Numb to It

I continue to be impressed with the clever indie rock stylings of Chicago’s Friko; they seem like shapeshifters, as there hasn’t been a single song that’s sounded quite like the one before. So, here we are again, with the band bringing a sound that certainly begins to feel like the best track Arcade Fire never wrote, albeit done with more earnestness and sincerity this go round. Plus, as you hit the 2 minute mark, the song begins to stomp on your soul, punching through with sheer exuberance; it’s insanely swoon-worthy, continuing the group’s consistent push towards Where We’ve Been, Where We Go From Here…out this Friday!
