Quin Galavis Shares New Single

Songwriter Quin Galavis has been around the Austin scene for quite awhile now, and we’ve been fortunate to watch from the sidelines as his craft has transformed from his full band work to his more recent solo stuff…but boy are you in for a surprise on his new single. Naturally brooding, Quin exhibits the patience here that allows him to draw the maximum emotion from the listener; you can feel the tension has he carefully walks his voice along the guitar path. Percussive elements don’t even bother entering the fray until after the one minute mark, allowing tension to build and build, though it never fully unfurls before us. There’s some fleshing out of the tune courtesy of Annecy Liddell and some guy named Thor Harris. Define Your Time, Quin’s new album, will hit on Novebmer 20th, with lots of special details in the mix.

Pets Share Fixed Taunt

There were a few sprinkles of Austin act Pets that came to my attention (you can check them by clicking on the band’s hyperlink). But, with that being said, I didn’t expect the band to come out of the gate and rule like this new single does. They’re operating with this melodic dissonance, oftentimes working with this speediness that evolves into blissed out moments of an ethereal nature…particularly when the vocals seem to just hang in the air, almost lifelessly, before crashing back into the core of the song. If you’re driving around Austin, looking to find what rips, well, this is it. Crank it up and dig in. Hopefully there’s more real soon!

Cast of Thousands Share So Much Better

We’ve been keeping our eye on Cast of Thousands, particularly as we worked with songwriter Max Vandever and his band Flesh Lights on our own little label. They just dropped a brand new single from their next LP, Third House. While there’s still a bit of attitude on the new project’s songwriting, Max has turned his craft into punching out way bigger hooks this go round. You’ll reap the rewards once you crank the volume up real high, relishing in the swagger of good old fashioned rock n’ roll. They’ll be dropping Third House next week, so get ready to salute those about to rock.

Cactus Lee Shares Sister Video

Cactus Lee may not be a household name yet, but after a fairly prolific couple of years, it looks like everyone’s starting to take notice. He’s got a slew of dates on the horizon from AmericanaFest, Flying Island Festival and Tomorrow Never Knows, all big indicators of the draw of his magical brand of country. And, since its been a minute, perhaps this brand new single is a hint that there might be more coming our very way just around the corner. I love how the track, and its Super 8 film footage, certainly feels like a dusty Summer day in Texas, yet you can hear the soulfulness in the voice, something that beckons you sing together with a bunch of your best buds. Please keep your eyes on the prize, that is, Cactus Lee.

Circling Back to Lavender Scare

While we were sure to grab Lavender Scare on our locals only Spring Break show with Side One Track One, I completely forgot that the band had recently tossed out their debut Bites EP, so here I am circling back to those jams to make sure you get a little taste. They’ve got a classic punk feel, powered by the raw tenacity from front-woman Ruby del Mar; she’s got this brash delivery that coolly curls into sprinkles of melody to break up the tour de force working behind her. Just imagine the bravado of the New York Dolls with a hint more of punk ethos and a bit more flare bursting through the speakers. If you’re into it, you should circle back to Bites as well!

Being Dead Release Nightvision Single

For those just now catching onto the Being Dead train (where ya been folks?), this new single is precisely one of the reasons we hold them in such high esteem. They tease you into their works, nearly 45 seconds of playful strum and vocal harmonizing to welcome you to the fun. Just then, that strum drops in with the perfect drum beat, and the song consumes you with this nostalgic bit of brooding pop; they don’t shy away from their natural inclination to have fun, painting little inside jokes between the masterful bend and break of Falcon Bitch’s performance. And, like many of their pieces, they don’t overindulge, giving you just enough of a taste that you walk away wanting more…and you’ll get more when they drop EELS on September 27th via Bayonet.

Letting Up Despite Great Faults Share Dress

Not sure why we have to wait until October to hear all of this new Letting Up Despite Great Faults record, but I will happily sit in wait, as the band have released what might be my favorite tune from the record today. There’s just something about the immediacy in this tune that soothes my indiepop itches, and the way it opens then picks up with drums and speed atop the steadying beat samples. This is that sort of unassuming brand that feels like soaking in the mist of a ginormous waterfall, a rainbow hanging between you and gallons of waterfall, filling your soul with joyous simplicity. Reveries will be out (finally!!!) on October 11th.

THEMM! Announce El Pastor

Austin outfit THEMM! have been cranking out pop rock for what seems like centuries, and they show no signs of slowing down anytime soon, and we’re grateful for that. This week the band bounce back with news of El Pastor, their newest EP recorded out at Sonic Ranch Studios earlier this year. It’s the band at their best, and also their most political, as they take aim at the ridiculousness that runs rampant through every Texas town mentioned in the tune. Still, they embrace what’s ahead of them, take it head on, and decide perhaps its best to “live, laugh, love.” You’ll be able to hear the whole EP on September 13th. And just for the record, I’m more of a Carnitas kind of guy.

Queen Serene Share Glowing Single

This new track from Queen Serene just recently dropped, and seeing as I caught the band last night for the single release, wanted to be sure to give it some love on the site. What I love is that the raw energy of the tune translates well to the recorded version, as part of the tune feels like a fiery rock piece and the other half is this motorik psychedelia that courses along the Autobahn, and when they stop to let you breathe, the growling guitars bite at your ears, shredding your speakers as the tune pounds to an emphatic close.

Hallo Return with Worth It All

Starting off our morning slowly today, crawling out of bed to find this delightful new track from Austin’s Hallo. The group are finishing up the final touches on their debut album, and deliver this powerhouse of a tune, drawn to the fire of Tiana Stuart’s powerful voice. Those vocals operate between a Texas twang and a more angelic push, while the band behind her forcefully punches down; I love the burning guitar distortion that fills the chorus moments. It sets up for a great breakdown in the track’s latter half, dropping hints at the fiery indie rock they’ll bring to the table when they wrap up that debut!
