Letting Up Despite Great Faults Share Dress

Not sure why we have to wait until October to hear all of this new Letting Up Despite Great Faults record, but I will happily sit in wait, as the band have released what might be my favorite tune from the record today. There’s just something about the immediacy in this tune that soothes my indiepop itches, and the way it opens then picks up with drums and speed atop the steadying beat samples. This is that sort of unassuming brand that feels like soaking in the mist of a ginormous waterfall, a rainbow hanging between you and gallons of waterfall, filling your soul with joyous simplicity. Reveries will be out (finally!!!) on October 11th.

THEMM! Announce El Pastor

Austin outfit THEMM! have been cranking out pop rock for what seems like centuries, and they show no signs of slowing down anytime soon, and we’re grateful for that. This week the band bounce back with news of El Pastor, their newest EP recorded out at Sonic Ranch Studios earlier this year. It’s the band at their best, and also their most political, as they take aim at the ridiculousness that runs rampant through every Texas town mentioned in the tune. Still, they embrace what’s ahead of them, take it head on, and decide perhaps its best to “live, laugh, love.” You’ll be able to hear the whole EP on September 13th. And just for the record, I’m more of a Carnitas kind of guy.

Queen Serene Share Glowing Single

This new track from Queen Serene just recently dropped, and seeing as I caught the band last night for the single release, wanted to be sure to give it some love on the site. What I love is that the raw energy of the tune translates well to the recorded version, as part of the tune feels like a fiery rock piece and the other half is this motorik psychedelia that courses along the Autobahn, and when they stop to let you breathe, the growling guitars bite at your ears, shredding your speakers as the tune pounds to an emphatic close.

Hallo Return with Worth It All

Starting off our morning slowly today, crawling out of bed to find this delightful new track from Austin’s Hallo. The group are finishing up the final touches on their debut album, and deliver this powerhouse of a tune, drawn to the fire of Tiana Stuart’s powerful voice. Those vocals operate between a Texas twang and a more angelic push, while the band behind her forcefully punches down; I love the burning guitar distortion that fills the chorus moments. It sets up for a great breakdown in the track’s latter half, dropping hints at the fiery indie rock they’ll bring to the table when they wrap up that debut!

Marry Cherry Shares New Direction

It’d be very easy for a band in Austin to slide into the traditional psychedelic path, as we’ve had the forefathers and modern torch-bearers, but I love how Marry Cherry never settled for that sound, despite being adjacent to the sound. They’ve been building their sound in a more pop broad sound for the last year or so, and perhaps with “New Direction” we finally get to the pinnacle of their sound. Those of you who love the cavernous worlds of acts like the Jesus and Mary Chain will find the band meeting up at the afterparty, only to venture off and hang with Primal Scream; I love how they’re building in these old school club sounds into their sets. Stoked to see where they go from here.

Club Coma Shares Changing the Rules

Our friends in Austin’s Club Coma haven’t stopped crafting music following their self-titled LP from last year; they’ve continued to take their approach to deconstructive pop even further. On this fresh single, they work for over a minute taking these appeasing elements of modern pop and twisting them into a blend of twisted noise and metal, setting the tone for the synthetic groove to drop right in underneath as they drive their pop sensibility into the listener’s ears. They’ll blend both elements of noise and pop into the single as it continues, continuing to see them taking apart pop music and building it up in their own image. And, if you’re in the ATX, they celebrate the single’s release tonight at Cheer Up Charlies with TC Superstar and more!

Voxtrot Share Esprit de Coeur Single

It’s been a lot of fun for us folks down here in Austin since Voxtrot returned to the scene; I’ve loved watching how they’ve fused their late work with a new direction, albeit one linked to their storied past in our city. Their latest single continues that growth, layering string arrangements around a continuous pop build. I loved how there was a bounce and bob in the opening moments, setting up a frivolous burst of joy before settling into the track as a set up for the vocal entry. Ramesh’s vocal performance shows his confidence in his abilities too, pushing his voice while still clinging to pop sentiments…a great moement at the 2:40 mark with some punctuated notes too. Keep your eyes peeled tomorrow for a very special show announcement concerning the band too!

Stream Cry About It LP from Liz Burrito

If you’ve hung out in the Austin music scene for the last decade or so, you’ve likely caught Liz Burrito performing in any number of your favorite bands such as Que Pasa or Kay Odyssey. But, this last week, while I was on vacation, she dropped her latest LP, Cry About It…and it might be one of my favorite things to come out of Austin this year. The songs bounce between country-fried ballads to dreamier textured pop tunes; I particularly keep coming back to playing “False Hope,” which reminds me of something Hope Sandoval might have foreshadowed. “Feeling Window” takes a nod from a lot of the San Francisco no-pop bands, drifting in like the haze from the agricultural burns down South. And, if you’re looking to something that feels akin to her more rock-oriented tunes, might we suggest out the closing ripper, “Spirits of the Hidden Cloud.” Get into the whole thing below.

Show Review: Say Anything @ Stubbs (6.28)

About 20 years ago I downloaded a copy of Say Anything‘s “…Is a Real Boy” from my university’s local file share server (sorry, Max). Wracked with guilt over the amount of times I played that album, I finally ponied up the cash for the album and a poster. While on summer break from college in 2007 my best friend and I hopped into her shitty 2001 hatchback, popped in the cd and made our way to Hard Rock Dallas in that sweltering heat to catch two of our favorite bands, Saves the Day and Say Anything. The show was electric and full of antics worthy of it’s own review, but I digress.

Dress Warm Release Backyard Single

We’ve been covering Dress Warm for a few year’s now, watching as the Austin trio found their musical footing. With their latest tune, you get this feeling that they’re finally settling into their skin. There’s this fragility that remains, particularly in the vocals, crafting this earnestness that’s capable of bewildering listeners. At the moment, I’m enjoying the way they’ve buoyed the sound, adding in textural strokes that move the song beyond just mere songwriter craft, then continue to grow that power into the track as it moves towards its close. Stoked to see what they’re working on, as this sounds like some of their strongest vibes.
