Feeling Small Share Arizona Driveway

Over the last few months, our friend Chase Weinacht from Marmalakes has offered us glimpses of what’s to come with his Feeling Small project. But, from my meaningless perch, this might be one of the most striking tunes he’s penned. Cleary, Chase’s voice can absolutely carry a tune, with or without accompaniment, but the stark nature of this performance places his sincerity and strength in the forefront. Light percussive touches and a hint of backing vocals carefully tiptoe around the guitar notes, all of it just giving enough lift to the tune as each note hangs, echoing in my ears for the time being…and perhaps yours as well.

Sundozer Share Double Single

Sundozer quickly amassing a collection of great songs, not to mention great musicians in their line-up; the newest singles feature Danny Reisch on percussion. Speaking of those new tracks, they’re taking their gloomy post-punk tones and spinning them in this glittery pop fashion. On “Charmed,” the bass bubbles as these little shimmering crystals fall into your ears; I love the way there’s these little syllabic punches delivered in the vocals on this tune too during the verses. There’s this great little turn before the 2 minute mark that opens up the song to this more vast vibe that stretches into a stabbing guitar piece atop the bass line. “100 Lives” has a different pulse to it, something that feels naturally frantic and energized. I love how the project keeps the mood circling about here, whilst still capable of kicking in some energy around those quick little jangles. One of my favorite ATX acts, so keep an ear out.

Genuine Leather Share Genuine Love

For almost ten years we’ve been throwing support by the shapeshifting styles of Chris Galis and Genuine Leather. While the early work of the band had Chris working with friends from the Austin scene, his later work reflects a bit more of a pop focus. Still, he’s always known his way around a huge hook, and that won’t change when he releases the Genuine Pleasure EP. I love the way this one slides in instantly, filling your ears with this sleek synthetic dreaminess; it puts the song in the current bedroom pop mold, only with a bit more bravado. Digging into the chorus, you can hear a bit of a funky R&B guitar slide, adding texture and style to the tune, clearly an indicator of how much time and dedication Galis put into his work for the LP. Think of acts like Tame Impala or Phoenix, sprinkling in just a bit more modern pop attitude. Genuine Pleasure is going to please a lot of ears on September 29th via The Animal Farm.

Single Lash Announce Ladida

I’ve been screaming from the ATH mountaintop about Single Lash years; they’ve been one of the only true gothic leaning bands in town…and they’re just absolutely huge live. With news of Ladida hitting, I really couldn’t wait to have some time to press play, and sit with the weight of this tune. There’s this heavy resonance here, with the band’s patience paying off huge dividends as it lets you just soak in the vast depths; I feel like its the musical equivalent of a late night bubble bath by candlelight. Rodolfo’s drumming is stellar, pounding out those machine gun fills, and Nicolas’ voice continues to mature with time, giving me chills when he delivers the line “ooh, what times is it there” with a faint quiver. They release Ladida on October 13th!

Half Dream Share Will I Still Bloom, Announce LP

I’ve been championing Paige Berry and her Half Dream project since they released the excellent Monster of Needing EP back in 2020. Now, news comes across that we’ll finally be getting the band’s debut Will I Still Bloom LP this October, and we’ve got the title track from Will I Still Bloom. This song’s filled with tons of little details that illustrate just how much the band’s grown; I love the little guitar tickles atop Berry’s voice and the thumping drums for the first 45 seconds or so. Then, at 53 seconds, the track shoots off, layering in a dreamier vibe from the guitars as Paige delivers a striking vocal performance. The band take a moment to flex their musicianship, then jump right back to the affair at hand, brooding in mood while we await the next huge chorus! Everything in this track just feels like a huge step for the band, and if Paige ever doubted herself, this song is evidence that she’s clearly blossomed into one of Austin’s finest songwriters. And, if you’re in the ATX tonight…the band celebrate the new single at Captain Quackenbush’s Soundspace, so come pregame with me as I DJ at Tweedys, then head to the show!

Semihelix Shares Downstream Single

In a city filled with solid artists, Semihelix have been on my radar the last few years for their distinctive sound; they fall more in line with a sort of traditional indiepop sound, albeit one that gets a touch fuzzy around the edges. I love the forlorn nature of Geannie’s guitar at the beginning, allowing the drums to sort of stomp their way into the bedroom as they set up to share their warmth. While the track rocks a bit of dreaminess, the bass grooves bring in this understated bop that makes me think of my favorite records from the 80s Australian scene. It’s really great to see the band take a huge leap from Recoil and continue to grow their sound. One of my fave ATX outfits at the moment, and this track will feature on a 7″, dropping later this year.

Daiistar Share Another Single from Good Time

Daiistar

I’m really interested to hear what Daiistar‘s debut album sounds like; they’ve been toying with me on every single they’ve dropped. Sure, they’re all in the same realm…psych, dream pop, shoegaze, but they’ve added in some layers to mix the tunes, which, for now, is keeping me on my musical toes. Plus, it’s all been really good, so you can’t argue with that start. This latest track from Good Time feels a bit like if Brian Jonestown just went off the deep-end into a sort of heavier realm; you can feel the weight of the guitars as the track swallows you up. Slow pacing only builds some solid tension, yet it never quite gets released, jamming out on the edges of dream pop as the song draws to a close. Fuzz Club will release Good Time on September 8th.

Just like the rest of the world, the Austin scene is just pushing out new music on the regular, and as we look forward to next week, I’ve got a few rad releases to make sure are on your radar. Obviously, one of the names and singles is already out there on everyone’s radar, but check in on what’s going on in our local scene…got some post-pop punk pop rock (Rival Waves), exploratory indie (Food Group) and some old school punk (Friday Boys)…but it’s all damn good.

Sundozer Shares Debut Single

We’ve always gotta keep our ears to the speakers in terms of Austin acts, as it seems there’s constantly something we can dive into, like Sundozer. Honestly, I don’t know a bunch about the project, other than its relatively knew, considering this is their debut single. This track has a bit of that late night chill to it, albeit washed over with hints of dream pop and jangling notes; you can hear the guitars dancing all around as the wash of synths coats the song’s core. Whispering vocals crest and fall into the track, sinking into the mix while the rhythm hits giving off just a bit of a kick to the tune. It’s a bit of everything, be it bedroom pop or indie pop, perfect for late night chills or daydreaming at your window.

Night Drive Share Cover Your Eyes Single

When this Night Drive song kicked in, I was intoxicated by the thumping pulse and the twinkling bits of synth that intermingled with the beat. Obviously, this song’s all about that stomping rhythm; you can feel yourself moved towards the club floor and pounding your feet into the cold floors as lights flash all around you. With the vocals, you get the band’s commentary on the difficulties we all face in living through the end of times, building in some ominous undertones to the pulsing groove of what lays beneath. Even with that, your body might be begging to just let go if you’ve got the volume cranked up high enough. Position II will be drop on August 4th.
