Miss Miranda Shares Daniel

Miss Miranda is the songwriting moniker of Miranda Haney, a recent Austin transplant via Baltimore who I met through my wife’s sister’s boyfriend. She’s been writing some tunes, though Austin hasn’t quite been treated to her songwriting often enough ( insert something about pandemic), so I figured I oughta share them up here. Her latest single is an intimate affair, mostly working with Haney’s voice atop the strum of her guitar. I love the faint quiver in the rising vocals when she meets the chorus for the delivery of “he’s got a voice like Daniel/and a voice you’d recognize.” That there my friends, gives you that 10 seconds of bliss I always crave in my tunes! Anyways, Mondays always end up fairly sedate, so figured I’d close out my day with this one here…a strong new voice from Austin.

Stream Abram Shook’s Satin Thief

A few weeks ago or more, I offered up a track from the forthcoming Abram Shook EP, but, I forgot to actually let you hear the entirety of Satin Thief. The EP serves as a sort of stop gap between albums, on one hand drawing from the funkier 2019 release, and a little bit of hazy soul from the as yet released new LP! I’ve really been digging on “Now and Laters” and its kind of funky groove working with Shook’s smoothed out vocal pop notes, but I reckon “Need” might be giving us a glimpse of what’s to come in the future. It’s Monday, and you need Abram to ease you into the day.

Why Bonnie Share New Tune

I think one of my favorite things of this whole pandemic has been the way many artists have reacted, releasing demos and rare tunes and the sometimes just recording a tune for the joy of playing. Late last night, Why Bonnie just upped a track with little information other than the tune itself, the first since the band released their Voice Box EP. This one feels like a mostly Blair tune, with quieted chords bending around her voice; it seems like an ode to taking a chance and saying goodbye, but perhaps I’m reading too far into the title. Regardless, glad to always have this lot putting something out.

Van Mary Share Connie Converse

As we’re already fans of Van Mary, it seems only appropriate that we encourage you to join us in supporting the band, and with this new single, it might be the one that grabs you. For me, the guitars are perfect, crisp and sharp, yet spinning dreamily, setting up Emily Whetstone’s booming performance. It’s interesting, those elements of that sort of dream pop fill in the negative spaces of the track, but the verses seem much more geared towards good old fashioned rock n’ roll; you can almost here the punch this would pack in the live setting. Plus, nothing wrong with tying yourself to the mysterious disappearance of Connie Converse…but let’s hope no one walks away from society or this band just yet, as they seem to be in peak form!

Alex Rieglman Shares Animal Ending

Our good friend Alex Riegleman is one of the members of our (and your) faves Big Bill. But, he’s been afforded the time to work on some tunes of his own, and we’d love to share one of those tracks with you today. The song doesn’t waste anytime pushing right into it, kind of like a classic rock meets Jeffrey Lewis; it employs traditional songwriting with Alex’s penchant for melody and creative wordplay. I love the heavy brief guitar solo in the tune’s middle, breaking up the style just enough to keep the song from growing stale. We’re always stoked to see what our friends are working on, aren’t you?

Announcing Gabe Hascall’s Realize What’s Real

We were more than thrilled to help Gabe Hascall, formerly of the Impossibles/Slowreader, get his last solo record Thousands of Thorns out there into the world. But, since its Bandcamp Friday and all, we figured we’d announce we’re doing another great record with Gabe, titled Realize What’s Real. The record is dropping in May, but we wanted to give everyone a heads up and share the first great single for you…in case you wanted to grab it before your friends! Artwork is done by Austin’s Antonio Bond, and as always, is really special. Press play and enjoy!

Dorio Drops Dorio’s Robot Friends EP

If you missed last year’s Yesterday the Sky Was Blue LP (Citrus City), then now seems like the perfect time to turn on some solid pop from Austin’s Dorio. Just yesterday, the band dropped Dorio’s Robot Friends EP, picking up on last year’s album and weaving the craft just a bit differently. The immediacy of the bounce in “Robot Friends” will hook you right from the start, only made more endearing by the perfect vocal combination that springs up here and there. Then the EP offers a couple of creative instrumental bits before turning you onto the screwed pop stylings, using the band’s penchant for pop hooks and chopping it up into this slow fizz. Hopefully this EP signals there’s more new stuff on the way!

Sasha and the Valentines Share Flower

I don’t know about you, Austin’s been pushing out some incredible voices this year; I loved Natalie’s performance in that new Tele Novella LP, and now there’s this great new track from Sarah Addi on the latest Sasha and the Valentines single. After a playful prelude, the song jumps in immediately with this energetic uptick; it’s got that sunny swagger, crossing the border between bossanova and casual cool. Of course, Addi comes in with this dreamy performance, letting her voice hang on the top of the guitars as they hit their high notes. The chorus allows her to soften a bit as the tune takes on a more expansive feel, albeit for a brief moment. This song feels like its perfectly times, hitting just as Austin seems to finally be gearing up for some warm weather. You can find this song on So You Think You Found Love, out on April 16th via Oof Records.

Missed This A. Sinclair Tune

Our friend Aaron has been writing and playing in bands for as long as he’s been in Austin; we’ve been fortunate to work with him before as the drummer for Grape St, the first LP I put out! But, he’s transitioned from his Frank Smith work to A. Sinclair the last few years, and with that, he’s really found his comfort zone. I love the warmth of his voice on this single, faintly reminding me of that glorious first Pete Yorn album. His guitar work feels super confident too, crisp and bending in all the right spots; this is definitely reaching the apex of his songwriting abilities. Look for his new LP Sunshine Ghost on March 26th.

Abram Shook Shares Sugar For Your Headphones

Our good friend Abram Shook reached out recently to hip us to some new work he’s got coming down the pipes; he has a new Satin Thief EP coming down the pipeline some time this month. He says the tunes on this EP are a nice little “gap between the more electro-funk of my last album, and the hazy, laid-back 70’s vibe of my next full-length.” So, while you’re waiting for another Abram release, settle into the undeniable hooks on display here. Part funk grooves, part space R&B, but the little vocal stutter of the chorus definitely has a way of sinking its way deep inside your brain. The Satin Thief EP drops March 12th, and keep an eye out as Abram promises lots more coming down the pipeline!
