Marcus Pina Releases You Are the Only One Here EP

Marcus Pina has lived a blessed life of sorts, touring the world playing music in various acts, from Roky Erikson to John Vanderslice (and more!), but he’s just now offering up his first solo outing, You Are the Only One Here EP. Bits of this collection have been mapped out in Pina’s brain for years, but the quarantine gave him the time to bring all the pieces together. One of my favorite tunes of the collection is the below track, “Great Divide.” It’s got this throbbing bass working, with little elemental atmospherics bubbling up from beneath the song’s surface. I dig how the guitar takes on a heavier focus in the second verse, giving this sort of melodic metal distortion to contrast Marcus’ melodic vocal delivery.

Sasha and the Valentines Share Witches Video

We tried to hip you to Sasha and the Valentines when they dropped their Green EP back in 2019, and now that there is a new LP on the horizon, we reckon you ought to hear for yourself why we’re so excited. I think it’ll be easy to draw some comparisons to early Beach House, particularly if you’re pulling your ears close to the blossoming of Sarah Addi’s vocal performance. Sure, those similarities can’t be denied, but I love the way there’s a bit more of a pull back on the reigns from the Austin outfit; they’re kind of allowing that sort of expansive sound to roll out across the great Texas landscape, rather than force hooks down your throat. Listen to the sound flow, like the smoke from the end of this song, billowing through out your speakers and into the great musical universe. So You Think You Found Love will be out on April 16th via Oof Records.

Sunscreen Shares Call Off Your Goons

Sunscreen is the solo project of our friend Miles who is 33.3% of the Hermits (we dropped their self-titled LP via cassette a few years back!). He just shared his new tune, build around a very careful sample and his distinctive voice. Knowing what a great musician he is, I really enjoyed the way he pulled back the pace and let the guitar line in this song sort of coast, like pedaling fast down a steep hill then just letting it ride as the rest of the song moves and turns behind it. Get lost in the warped pop mind below!

Indoor Creature Announce Living in Darkness

Our friends over at Indoor Creature have been hard at work prepping for the release of their new LP, Living in Darkness. Just this past weekend they dropped the debut single from the release, an upbeat pop swing that pulls in some R&B influences that are undeniably catchy. Lyrically, they’re definitely taking aim at the masses, taking to task all those seeking greed at the expense of their fellow citizens. Just be sure to save up your energy for the great little horn solo mid track…one of the many highlights in the band’s performance here. They’ll drop the new LP in May via the Record Machine.

Tele Novella Share Paper Crown Video

As anticipation builds for the release of Merlynn Belle, Tele Novella share one final video/single to entice your ears before it drops. And no offense to Jason here, but this track is completely Natalie’s show; her vocals are right in the front of the mix, showing off this insane range. Steady pop notes rise to meet quivering high notes, then dropping right into the max in this incredible playful manner; there’s also an emphatic punch that’s set up in the chorus, riding along the gallop of the drums. While I’ve always enjoyed the work of the band, this whole LP is starting to really really special. Kill Rock Stars will drop it for us all on February 5th.

Balmorhea Return with The Wind LP

Austin outfit Balmorhea have been mostly quiet since 2018, with various members of the band working on other projects. But, that time has allowed Michael Muller and Rob Lowe to really focus on creating expansive soundscapes, with ties to stories of French saints, Greta Thurnburg and general meditations on the state of the natural world. Their music, as always, is a truly immersive experience; you’ve got to let yourself go, allowing the slight nuances to move you in new directions in step with the song’s careful meandering. Never a bad day for a new track to come our way from this lot; they’ll be releasing The Wind later this year via Deutsche Grammophon.

Brother Sports Back with Dry Eyes

Lockdowns and quarantines have really pushed Austin’s Brother Sports into high gear; they continue to release jam after jam, with their iii EP, just dropping in this past week. One of my favorite tunes is “Dry Eyes,” which kind of has this sort of low-energy Strokes feel to it, if that makes sense. In my ear, it kind of takes that deep throated vocal charm, working it over some sharp notes that have this dreamier swagger in a slow-burn sort of way. Just seems like the band have a handful of infectious tunes up their sleeve at every turn, so I’m game to listen, and hope you are too!

Half Dream Share Christmas All Alone

Paige Berry and Half Dream released one of my favorite EPs this year, Monster of Needing…and today they’ve got a holiday tune Paige penned to share. While the song was written pre-pandemic, the thematic relevance to this year’s holiday season is blatantly obvious in the title alone. The core of the song really focuses on Berry’s voice, which is a marvel, draped over a heavy strum and some accents in the song’s background. Always down to celebrate a great voice, and perhaps we’ll all find solace knowing that we’re all alone together.

Aaron Troyer Announces Trappings of a Golden Myth

After several moves across the country and back, Aaron Troyer has found a new home here in Austin, and he’s already set to release his first bit of music; Trappings of a Golden Myth is set to be released on the first day of the new year, courtesy of No Coast Recordings. It’s interesting that Troyer should now call Texas home, as his voice sounds built for the landscape, carrying this huge heavy-toned troubadour feel. The music is right at home too, feeling a bit of a Western influence while sprawling across the great expanse of the song (or the Lone Star state). If you dig it, be sure to pre-order the cassette before No Coast runs out!

Redbud Release To the Moon Video

Another day and another new Austin voice to turn my attention towards. Redbud, an act that wasn’t yet on my radar, dropped this wonderful tune Friday via Porchfire Records. The song’s a touch on the brief side, but the group tries to maximize that time with the striking voice of Katie Claghorn; as soon as it drops in around that guitar line you can feel yourself entering a dream state, lost in your thoughts. I like the detailed quality of the guitar, but when it hits the 1 minute mark, it has this resonation that really sealed the deal for me, as far as just loving a good sound. Trust me, if you’ve got 2 minutes to spare, this is where its at!
