Imp of Perverse Share Despair Puff

The great thing about living in any so called “music capital” is there’s still stuff you haven’t discovered, like Imp of Perverse. It’s the recording project of Sean Lochridge, who seems to have honed in on my love for really solid collage pop. He’s built layers of poppy little guitar riffs, buoyed by nice little textural synth touches that add some dense atmosphere to the track. The vocals are hidden, quiet in the mix, but it’s perfect in the way that it feels just like an added texture in the track, yet still stands out on its own. Happy to get turned onto this, and then hopefully get you hyped on it too!

New Pelvis Wrestley Tune + Single Release

Pelvis Wrestley have two things going for them: 1) an incredible band name 2) the music to back up said band name. They’ve got this great new single, “Susanna,” which they’ll be celebrating here in Austin over at Cheer Up Charlies (w/ Fanclub and Lord Friday the 13th). This new track revolves around a really heavy synth beat, propelling the song forward while Benjamin Violet hangs his pop sensibility along the vocals; I really love the rise and fall factor that coincides with the chorus on this one, particularly as it takes the song toward a soaring close. Come join the band tomorrow night at Cheer Ups if you’re in town, and keep an eye out, as rumor has it, there’s an EP on the way in 2020.

Fresh Fanclub Track

The indiepop scene in Austin has its ebbs and flows, but over the last few years, Fanclub have been keeping it going, pretty much on their own. Today they share their newest tune, another propulsive guitar pop number with Leslie’s voice offering that textured softness pop fans fawn over. As always, they employ a fair amount of synth samples in their work, which add that energetic pulse, building in layers sound to avoid the banal pitfalls of the genre. As always, they’ve nailed the perfect balance in this tune, and let’s hope that another single and news of an LP follow in the very near future.

ThunderStars Announce Number Stations

If there’s one thing I love supremely, it’s the dreamier side of guitar pop. Luckily, there’s a new act in Austin playing about by the name of ThunderStars. It’s a pretty heavy guitar tune, kind of like taking great bits of Galaxie 500 and filling in the edges with even more fuzz. The rhythm section seems to exist mostly to provide the song with a natural heartbeat, only erupting when called upon to take a little bit of a musical excursion to build some texture into the tune. It’s all the bits of all the sorts of good stuff, be it dream pop or shoegaze or just alternative; the fuzz here just curls my pop toes. They’ll be releasing their album Number Stations on January 10th.

Chill Russell Share New Single + Hotel Vegas Show

Our friends in Chill Russell love to brandish their pop rock licks all over our town, and tonight they’re going to be doing so with a new set of tunes beneath their belt. They’ve got a show tonight at Hotel Vegas, and they’re very likely to play this brand new single off their forthcoming EP (recorded with Frenchie Smith). They toss out some solid alternative riffs and attitude for the verses, but this track definitely gets its punch in the chorus; it almost sounds like they were listening to The Breeders “Cannonball,” with just a hint more venom in there. They release the single and celebrate in style over at Hotel Vegas at normal adult hours, doors are at 7 PM.

Bauwaves Share Early Morning Summer

Austin outfit Bauwaves are gearing up for the release of their new LP, U R Everything in January, so today we’ve got their new video to share with you. The track has this jagged little indie rock vibe to it, almost as if the band can’t contain the music they’re about to unleash on all us. You can feel the tension in the vocals, the way the syllables are shaking to get out and crash down upon us; it’s a great way to set up the chorus from Lew Houston, who describes the song as a cathartic morning walk in Austin, helping him cope with a deep depression. Scuzzy and catchy, my favorite sort of indie rock; the tune appears on the new LP, out January 10th via Salinas Records.

Xetas Announce The Cypher

We here at ATH have been waiting to hear what was in store when Xetas much anticipated new LP was announced. Today the whole world gets to hear the power the band brandish with the new of the Cypher. Immediately, there’s this dangerous energy with the rhythm section crafting a steady stomp while the riffs knife their way in and out of the tune. The vocal delivery is almost a call to action in the way its delivered…save for the chorus which brings in just the slightest hint of pop sensibility to the band’s sound. It all fades into a wall of crashing noise, drawing the song to a close. It’s energetic, touching on hardcore and punk, while building in some insatiable hooks; this could be the record that blows the rest of you out of the water. The Cypher drops on January 24th via 12XU.

Orthy Shares Which is Better

Monday’s can be a struggle, even on your days off, so you’ve gotta be sure to get something energetic to really get you moving out the door. It’s a good thing we have the latest single from Orthy hanging about; it’s the upbeat dance number I didn’t know I needed. The guitar’s have this angular dance to them, seemingly nostalgic, while offering that frivolity that makes it easy to live your best life. I love the depth of the production on this one too, adding this rhythmic pulse to the tune, only furthering the hook of the guitars. It’s all the Monday you need wrapped in a 4 minute present. Just another reason to get hip to Orthy before the band drops Fable Living in January of next year.

Cosmic Chaos Share Average Legs + Show Tonight at Cheer Ups!

Austin’s Cosmic Chaos have been making quite a name for themselves since the release of their Ca’os EP back in 2018. While they’re clearly cut from the same cloth as many other psychedelic acts in town, they’re flexing some musicianship that definitely elevates the band. Take their brand new single here, and while you can hear that swirl of garage emotions, the song’s latter half gets pumped up with this huge saxophone solo…which is not an uncommon inclusion in the band’s sound. I’m also really drawn to Laura Mendoza’s voice; it has this youthful exuberance, whilst still seeming like she’s challenging the world and the status quo. The band celebrate the release of their brand new single over at Cheer Ups this evening with The Boleys and Geranium Drive. If you’re not there, then look for the band’s new LP in the early 2020.

If you weren’t aware and trying to hate, the ATX music scene is still very much alive and well with new music coming out all the time. My evidence of the vibrant scene comes today from locals brother sports and their new track “I Still Remember (siempre)”. I like the relaxed, cool vibe of the song which plays nicely with the infectious beat and hazy themes. It seems as though we better start paying attention to this up and coming band as they continue to put out solid new music.
