The Living Pins Drop Gold Video

I love a band that offers no bullshit. They get up on the stage, turn up the amps and just rock it out, much like you get when you catch the Living Pins. Their recorded music is much the same, as you’ll hear in their latest single. The band notes that the tune takes its roots in a bit of classic rock sound, but as the vocals hit with those stuttering riffs, there was something that felt like a rocking version of Alanis Morissette, which I actually think is really cool. The rhythm section holds the swagger, letting the edges kind of get fuzzy with psychedelic tinges and feedback while the rest of the group just give you straightforward rock. Give a listen, won’t you.

Day Friend Drop Blackout Single

Over the last year or so we’ve been hyping up Austin act Day Friend; they played our SXSW show with SOTO, then dropped the rad “Brainworm” single. Today, there’s a fresh tune that I’m particularly excited about; it’s got a bit more of a pensive post-punk nature, taking time to stretch out the guitar sound a bit. But, don’t think they’ve gone soft as the cymbals and drums still smash through the mix, and you can hear this slight little growl on the vocals. But, if you stick around, you get to hear a little plot twist, which is one of the many reasons I love the group, as they take on more of an explorative psychedelic beat blasting off towards the track’s close. Be sure you jam this one.

Thanks Light Return with the Valley

It was just a few weeks ago when Austin band Thanks Light were making RayRay and I nostalgic with their ode to Costa Rica. And, they’re right back at it with another fresh single from the current cycle, this one hitting more of a traditional indie folk sound. You get a steadily marching drum to open the tune, awaiting its union with light strings and a barroom piano line; it’s subtly uplifting, yet solemn once the heavier tones from the vocals sweep into the picture. They ride those moments up until the chorus, where gang vocals lift you up so as to swing you right back into the tilt-a-whirl feel of the verses. Another solid number from the ATX homies.

Obligatory Die Spitz Post

Austin quartet Die Spitz are all the buzz in our fair city. Admittedly, I have a hard time writing about them, as I taught several of the members when they were wee tweens listening to Twentyone Pilots. But, I’m proud of them, and their recent signing to Third Man Records indicates their meteoric rise; I know our friend Marc from THEMM is an absolute huge fan. So, here’s a new single and video from their forthcoming LP, Something to Consume. Circling Back to the Stayres

It isn’t always easy to keep up with the constant flux of new music coming out of Austin (though our friend John at 101X Homegrown crushes it on the weekly). So, it seems like we missed this new record from the Stayres, and I wanted to hit back on that to make sure I’m giving their Duplex LP a little more love. They embrace a sort of early 90s rock aesthetic (and no, not grunge), more of a kind of mixture of punk and late Replacements vibes. They mix it up too, so each track, while tied together, has its own vibe; I’m quite partial to “Don’t Touch the Humans” and “Cora,” with each one operating a slight bit of bravado and assuredness. I’ll drop those two tones at the bottom and encourage you to check out the rest of Duplex HERE.

Nuclear Daisies Drop Infinite Joy Single

If you are marking things down on your calendar, you might want to pencil in August 1st, as that’s the drop date of the new LP from Austin’s Nuclear Daisies. The band features Alex Gehring of Ringo Deathstarr, which should build in some expectations of their sound, but, like many folks in the shoegaze genre they’re flexing their craft and making it into something a bit more refreshing. This single has a heaviness to it, almost an industrial brand of electronica, hitting with wave after wave; it’s balanced out by distorted guitars driving the rhythm into your brains. That big sound gets split right through the middle with Alex’s voice hitting some angelic dream pop notes, creating this tasty little melodic center you’ll want to bite right into. First Taste of Heaven hits on August 1 via Portrayal of Guilt.

Stella and the Very Messed Share Big Familiar

The news of brand new Stella and the Very Messed has been sitting in my inbox for a few weeks, and I’m so excited about this record I couldn’t wait to share the news with you. Stella Maxwell, formerly of Cruiserweight, has been a powerhouse in the Texas music scene for several decades, and despite my love for all her previous works, this new single is just a straight hit. A light strum opens before the drums crash in with a wash of heavy guitar riffs, hitting you right in the face as Maxwell’s voice belts out notes with an assuredness of an indie rock veteran. The way the band pull back to kind of offer a little moment of rest, then blast back just builds this huge wall of power that washes over you again and again. You’ll be able to get yourself a copy of their new record, Big Familiar, this Fall via Double Helix Records.

Thanks Light Share Costa Rica

If ever a song was justified as existing on this site, it would absolutely have to be the latest track from Austin’s Thanks Light. You see, both RayRay and I have spent time in Costa Rica, myself having lived there for some time, so the thematic reference of the happiness of that country definitely feel like they hit home. They’re offered in a playful style, sort of like a Texas version of “pura vida,” with twanging guitars being bent and stretched beneath a summery heat whilst elegant keys give the track a little more proverbial meat. Just a gentle sway in the breeze, like sitting beachside and sleeping in a hammock, “way down in Costa Rica.”

Gus Baldwin Drops Brand New Single

From the looks of things, Gus Baldwin is going to have a pretty busy year; he’s already released one album with The Sketch (which we raved about), but now we’re hearing that there’s a pocket full of solo releases lined up. Our first listen is a bit of back and forth banter between what one can assume is an AI robo-date and another character of Baldwin’s design. There’s this plodding back and forth for a moment, then the track opens up into this more garage-psych realm, using stair-stepping guitars and blasts of fuzz to guide us on this journey into the hedonistic realm of skronking horns and swirling madness. One of my favorite Austin acts, you dig?

Whalers Drop Cross My Eyes

Austin outfit Whalers are not strangers to these pages, and as their singer Gus is currently living outside of the country, the group have opted to sprinkle in some of their recently recorded tunes to fill in the gaps until his return. Speaking of the vocals, they’ve got this grab that borders on a psychedelic romp and a more soulfully weighted pop feel; it’s the rise and fall of each note that allows the group to work in and out of the gaps, filling it with these really incredible moments of lush pop. Honestly, its the last twenty seconds or so that sold me, with this sort of euphoric push to a close, raining melodies and hooks upon me. Always love to hear from this lot!
