Pastel Ghost Shares Mercury

If you’ve not heard of Pastel Ghost, then we advise you to revisit Abyss (2015), as you’ll see how the artist has risen. But, Vivian Moon has relocated from Cali to Austin, with her sound fitting in nicely to the current dance/electronic scene the city’s fostering. Listening to the latest single from Ethereality, I can’t help but draw comparisons to Crystal Castles…the good pop songs before we discovered that guy was trash. It’s got a huge driving hook that bounces while the vocals come in with just a bit of effects in order to blend the voice into the track’s natural texture. Seems like a great dance tune for late at night, or, as is the case, early this morning; feel the song power through you, let your arms wave free in the air! You can grab the new LP from Cleopatra Records now! Austin fans can catch the act on October 5th at Elysium for the album release party!

Ramesh Returns with West

Ramesh has been going it alone since his famed Voxtrot outfit called it a day. Fortunately, he works at his own pace, offering singles from time to time, always enjoyable. This new track has a huge vocal performance from Ramesh, with the instrumentation slowly building throughout the song’s core. Perhaps its because we once released a Ramesh LP, or just because I spent a ton of time with Voxtrot, but his voice always has this famliarity to it, with an added emotive power now that guitars have quieted a bit in place of synths. His keen ear for orchestrated pop is clearly on display below, so enjoy.

Samantha Glass Drops New Video

Ever on the front lines of Austin’s electronic music scene, Holodeck Records have got another star-in-waiting with Samantha Glass. But, before the full length drops, we should lend an ear and eye to their recent video for “Cruel Anxiety.” The track builds with layering hollow percussion atop synth lines for a solid minute, with these distant atmospheric noises popping up. The tones of Beau Devereaux are heavy, adding to the dark undertones the track provides. But, much like the juxtapose color scheme of the black and white video, Beau’s voice has this slight melodic inflection as they deliver lines, allowing everything to come full circle. Nine Memories Between Impression and Imprint will be out on October 12th.

Borzoi Drop New Single

Austin’s Borzoi released the excellent Surrender the Farm EP, and now it looks like the band have a brand new LP on the horizon for 12XU. Our first taste offers some great insight into what we can expect, and from the sounds of the song’s opening minute and a half, they’re looking to take an exploratory route to post-hardcore. Sinister guitar notes hang in the air, battling subtle bass lines while the percussion works underneath. Once the vocals come into play, the track takes on an ominous tone, almost picking up pace before unleashing a wall of noise onto listeners. Then it recedes, only to return with a stabbing pulse of angular noise while it sounds like the band are tearing through your speakers. Clearly the band just doesn’t care what you expect, and that bodes well for A Prayer for War; it drops on 12XU on September 21st.

Charlie Belle Are Back

The Austin indiepop duo Charlie Belle have had some ups and downs in their brief career, from NPR praise to leaving their label, they’ve seen it all. It seems that’s helped them keep things in persepective, and with their forthcoming EP, it looks like they’re back to basics working around the centrical force that is pop music. Jendayi has this sparkling voice, proudly defiant at times and quiety coy at others; it works well against the circular riffs from her guitar. The band will release their Like I Love This EP on September 25th, with another EP already being readied for Spring of 2019.

Show Preview: Smokescreens at Hotel Vegas (8/23)

Thursday night is as good a night as any for a rock show, and all of Austin is in for a treat, should they choose to visit Hotel Vegas on said night. You get two great traveling acts in the Molochs and Smokescreens, the latter associated to our site’s highly regarded fave label, Slumberland Records…not to mention a Terry Malts/Business of Dreams connection. If you haven’t, as we suggested, picked up Used to Yesterday, then we suggest you do so now. The Molochs, for their part, will likely play a good deal off their forthcoming LP, Flowers in the Spring, so why not sneak a peak? And, both Tres Oui and the Zoltars will be peforming on the night, both ATH approved! Doors are at 9!

Another Charmer from Molly Burch

It should probably come to no surprise to us, by now, that Molly Burch would charm us all over with her latest single. For my two cents, I love the playful, almost tropicalia-esque guitar chords being used in the distance. It plays as the great set-up for the deep smoky tones that dominate the various verses in the album. She also takes on a more crystaline vocal during the chorus, once again illustrating what a powerful music tool Burch’s voice can be. Her new full lenght, titled First Flower, will be released by Captured Tracks on October 5th; it’s probably going to be ridiculously good.

Summer Salt Release Another New Single

Long ago, we could claim responsibility for helping Summer Salt to new heights, having released 2 EPs with the band on our label. But, now all the success is on the band and their hard work; they tour non-stop, driven by playing to all their fans. Andwith that success comes new label, Epitaph, who will be releasing the group’s newest effort, Happy Camper at the end of September. This is perhaps the best way for you to start off your week, with the band offering their take on traditional harmonies, maximized by Matt’s ever-powerful harmonies atop the band’s work.

Welp. We’re just a week away from the release of the brand new Exhalants LP, and why not bring you one final listen before it hits the streets. This time around the band toy with you, and their sound. Guitar lines quietly trickle before a rush of crashing noise lands atop you, and then it recedes. It sets listeners up for a a guttural growl that bursts through the wall of smashing sonics, then again, recedes; it’s a beautiful representation of the power the Austin act brings to both their live shows and their recordings. Look for their self-titled LP to drop on August 24th via Self Sabotage Records.

Single Lash Ready Prepare You for Providence

Single Lash might be one of Austin’s most under-appreaciated acts; they quietly released a beautiful LP back in 2016, and now they’re prepping Providence for you. The shoegaze element that resonates with most folks lurks in the background of this song, though I’m drawn to that cleaner guitar cut that seemingly dances its way through. But, Nicolas’ voice has this deep seductive quality that’s hard to ignore; it’s both powerful and soft at once, letting the guitars ring around his every note; it’s almost as if he’s calling to you through the noise in your speakers. I love the sublime fade out offering more of a shimmer as the tune turns to its close. Look for the album to drop on October 26th via Holodeck Records.
