The Electorate Return with the Great Divide

Having played in the Aussie music scene for some time, the mates in The Electorate are coming at us with a professionalism that, honestly, we just don’t get that often nowadays. The arrangement boldly builds, only to pull back so that the lyrics can join in, moving towards that sweeping jangle I adore. Light little bits of accented vocals give emphasis to the main mix, creating this budding heaviness that washes over the listener as the song seems to spin into sonic territory that borders on shattering all the pop sensibility they’ve built up. Yet, the restraint and production are such that they never seem to step out of line, making their new album, By Design, seem like a forthcoming highlight of our year; it drops on May 30th.

e4444e Shares Crutch Single

Australian artist Romy Church, aka e4444e, is one of my favorite acts from Australia at the moment, and the latest single from his new LP is an absolute pop journey. When it begins, it sort of feels mostly atmospheric, perhaps an echo from the glory days of Animal Collective, but then it begins to blossom and grow. Layers are added to the vocals, with a heavier wash of instrumentation crashing against the shores of the song. Then suddenly, it’s all peeled back, aside from a faint echo and gentle strum, letting a vocal casually float down from above. Little echoes fill in the space as the tune burns to a fine ash; you’ll definitely want to immerse yourself in Authentic Natural Tradition, dropping on May 31st via Dinosaur City.

CLAMM Share No Idea

There’s a lot of softness on the site today, so I wanted to make sure I included something a little more abrasive to satiate those punkers out there. CLAMM have been one of Australia’s hottest rock acts over the last few years, and their new album Serious Acts aims to continue the meteoric rise, and they kick right into gear here. The aggression pushes the tune’s message with urgency, delivering lines like “this can’t be it/we must make change,” and we all can see that if there ever was a time, that time is now. Turn the volume knob to the right and keep an eye out for Serious Acts, dropping May 20th via Meat Machine.

Dumb Things Share Outta Time Track

In a little over one wee, my current favorite Aussie’s, Dumb Things, will release their latest album, Self Help. They’ve been teasing us since the record’s announcement, and we’ve got one final single to enjoy before we double down and play the album on repeat for weeks. “Outta Time” caught my ear at first because of the percussive element on this track; it’s quick and snappy, whipping the song into a frenzy, despite the rest of the group trying to pull back on the reigns. For me, that matched up with the refrain “feels like I’m running outta time” that courses through the song’s entirety, and how often do you get to say the lyrics and rhythm section match up? Then of course, there’s overlapping harmonies and the group’s affinity for crafting melodic magic, so again, Self Help is out next Friday and you’re going to need to listen!

SXSW Interviews 2025 – Hachiku

SXSW Interviews 2025 – Delivery

It is upon us and here people. SXSW music officially kicks off TODAY and while most of the ATH staff is stuck at work, you should be out and about or at least prepping for the week ahead. We are super pumped today to finish off our preview interview series with possibly our favorite band coming in to town this week, Australian buddies Delivery. Dumb Things Announce Self Help LP + Share New Single

If you come to our site from time to time, we hope you uncover something that’s possibly overlooked but worthy of repeat listens. Dumb Things is one such band, and their “Self Help” single was one of my absolute favorite tracks last year. The Aussie outfit have just announced they’ll be releasing their Self Help LP this April, and with that, they’ve sprinkled this delighting ditty to satiate your pop needs. Steady drums march you into the tune, then the sweetness of the vocals from Madeleine hit you right in the face; it’s enough that her voice sparkles in the verse, but when that chorus drops, aided by the rest of the group, I was just crushed. Really excited for the group, and for you to get to hear these songs! Self Help is out April 4th.

Shrapnel Share One More Single

You only have to wait a handful of days before Shrapnel unveil their latest LP, and we’ve been helping cover as much as we can on the lead up, and now there’s one final peek under the covers. This number has this sharpness that pushes some bravado, though their melodic vocal mixture belies their natural pop sensibility. They begin to push that more and more as the track progresses, which ultimately takes the tune into the psychedelic territory; it then becomes apparent you’ve been on this mystical journey all along, only you had no idea where they were taking you until they come back in with a punchy drop of riffs that ride off onto the horizon. Sedan Center is out Friday via Tenth Court.

Skeleten Release Let It Grow Single

If, like most parts of the US, you’re in need of a little musical warmth, you can turn to Skeleten this morning, as the Australian offers a fresh single from his new LP that seems perfect for a blanket and a cup of tea. Like most of the work we’ve heard from the forthcoming Mentalized LP, things are more contemplative, letting the beat work slowly evolve into its own experience. On the vocals, here, and elsewhere, there’s a R&B bend, illustrating a little bit of pop influence leaking into the craft. Mentalized will be released on February 7th via 2MR, but feel free to immerse yourself in the listening experience as most tracks are streaming currently.

We’re already looking forward to the SXSW lineup, particularly as they’ve listened, relatively, to some of the noise surrounding their sponsorships (though the artist pay bump could still be higher). But, one of the main things I love, and I know a shit ton of folks who over look this benefit, is that it allows bands to apply for grants from their governments to come perform in our country…and Coldwave is one of the group’s just announced for a trip to our shores. The Australian band reminds me a lot of Shame, though they’ve got a larger group building in the texture, as you’ll see from this live video they recorded for “Italia ’06.”
