Give This New Beaches a Listen

Today, news made its way from Australia that Beaches will be releasing their new double album, Second of Spring; accompanying the announcement was this driving swirl of psych rock that should definitely alert you to your next favorite act. From the get go the band pushes the heavy pace, waiting for the vocals to carefully enter the picture. I like how the focus is on the song’s emotive powers; the lyrics are good and well, but they almost seem an afterthought as you hear stabbing electronic beats and varying layers of guitars drag you into your speakers. Look for the new record to hit on September 8th via Chapter Music.

Another New Pregnancy Track

Pregnancy is the the project of various members for Australian hit-makers like the Ocean Party, Totally Mild and Ciggie Witch. There’s a brooding no-wave vibe to the track, with vocals delivered in a matter-of-fact manner while guitar chords dance playfully in the background. While much of the track dwells in this manner, there’s a dreamy moment that closes out the track with just a hint of energy. If you’re looking for a solid day starter, then this track is the one for you. Look for the band’s debut album, Urgency, to drop on July 14th via Lost and Lonesome and Emotional Response.

Playful Summer Pop from Crepes

Australia is home to the great bands, and added to the mix recently is the work of Crepes. They’ve been relatively quiet since 2015, but here they are bouncing their way with this playful sun pop that recalls the hook-laden singles of Woods; it’s nostalgic, yet rooted in the present with the various layers of tinkering synths and vocals. This is the best sort of pop in the summer time, both warm and groovy, which continues to build my expectations for the band…they promise to have a full length LP coming our way real real soon.

Go Listen to the Suss Cunts EP

Suss Cunts first caught my ear with their playful video for “Shit Friend” that ran a month or so ago. Now, you lucky friends in search of some bouncing rock n’ roll can go ahead and stream the band’s brand new EP. “Shit Friend” is definitely a stunning track, especially once the band locks into the groove, but I’m remaining partial to “Sweater Vest;” its got a slight jangle to it, but also this brattiness or fuckall attitude that really gets you…but dammit if the chorus hook of “Julianne” isn’t just as spot on! The EP is now available from Emotional Response.

The Triffids Reissues Come Out Friday

I spent the first few days of my break finishing off “Grant and I,” which mentioned the Triffids as one of the other early Aussie acts that influenced the country’s musical landscape. I’d only listened to the band casually, as they weren’t as dear to me as the Go-Betweens, but I’m really excited for the reissue of Treeless Plain and In the Pines this Friday. I love the way the band seems so relaxed in their songs, seemingly foretelling the country’s flare for casual pop. Here’s a little ditty I’ve been enjoying over the last few days to hopefully pique your interest and have you revisiting the band’s catalog along with these reissues.

Brand New Music from Pregnancy

Want to talk about a super group? Well, then you should meet Australia’s Pregnancy, featuring members for The Ocean Party, Totally Mild, Ciggie Witch and more. Our first introduction to the band has the group looking at angular dance-laden grooves, fronted by Zac Denton of The Ocean Party; he offers up a smoothed vocal that’s met in the background by Ashley Bundang. It’s an upbeat number with insatiable groove that promises excellence when the band release their debut later this year via Lost and Lonesome/Emotional Response.

Video Premiere: Treehouse Drop Hammer on the Door

I love to fawn over Aussie acts, as the world probably knows, and lately, I’ve taken to enjoying the work of Treehouse. The band is letting us share this playful video, which might be the perfect introduction to the group…if you’ve yet to have them cross your radar. Musically, “Hammer on the Door” almost holds onto a dreamy quality, allowing the guitar work to walk the fine line between heavy alternative and jangling pop music. The vocals are a touch more impassioned, always ramshackle, creating a nice dose of tension between the brooding pop sensibility and a near-live quality. You’ll be able to grab a copy of the band’s forthcoming Centre of Their World EP on 12″ vinyl courtesy of Bedroom Suck Records; it’s being released on April 28th, and preorders can be grabbed HERE.

Brand New Ocean Party Track

One of the great things about having a multitude of great singers and songwriters in one band, such as The Ocean Party, is that they never seem to stop writing music. They’ve returned home from an extensive US tour, which surely won them more fans; and, they return home with a new track for your ears. How do you listen to pop music like this and not fall in love; it even includes a nice little horn serenading you in the song’s latter half. All we know at this point is the band plan to release a new album at some point in 2017, so stay tuned for even more great pop.

New Music from Blank Realm

Blank Realm haven’t released anything new since they dropped Illegals in Heaven in 2015, but perhaps something is on the horizon. Our first hint is the new single they’ve tossed into the Split Singles Club courtesy of Milk! Records and Bedroom Suck Records. This has an old-school vibe to it, almost as if one of the Britpop forefathers opted to come out of retirement to bring us this skittering little club burner. Bedroom Suck Records to Reissue Good Morning

I’m not typically one to get into the reissue game, as far as posting goes, but I feel like Australia’s Good Morning has been vastly overlooked…though I pointed them out here long ago. Luckily, the good folks over at Bedroom Suck Records will be re-releasing the band’s Shawcross and Glory EPs on one 12″, with additional singles like the delightful pop tune lurking on the pages below. To me, this feels like what’s really going on down in Australia, offering sublime pop sensibility in a casual manner that begs for listen after listen. Look to get your hands on a copy come July 7th.
