Last Week’s Jams (4.3 – 4.7)

There was a ton of great music dropping last week, which seems to be the norm for this Spring…not that we mind one bit. I tried to give some love to our Austin friends like Jana Horn and Letting Up Despite Great Faults, who both dropped new releases…and new tunes from Batty Jr. and Born Twins too, so keeping the ATX alive. It was good to hear new stuff from Estonia’s Pia Fraus, who’ve always crafted great landscape shoegaze. New stuff from Cindy and Beach Fossils wasn’t a bad way to slide into the week either, but we closed it out with a fun feature between My Favorite and Holy Wire. Check it all out.

Batty Jr Share Table is Gone II

As we ride into the middle of the week, I wanted to be sure to kick in with a little bit of a midweek ditty, brought to you by Austin’s own Batty Jr. here. On the horizon, the band have DO A U E, their latest LP, but for now, let’s rejoice in this meditative bit of cool folk pop. You can’t pull away from the natural groove presented, with that rhythmic pulse pushing things up and down and back again. A dual vocal performance ties into the folk heritage, but I love how the song still feels charming in the most playful sense, like we’re being let in on some little secret that makes us all smile. But, while there’s definitely a band brandishing the joyousness of their craft, there’s also some serious musical chops, so be sure you stick through to hear the strings and a little boogie woogie guitar take you to the close!

Premiere: RG Lowe Drops New Single + Release Show (2/2)

Last year RG Lowe stepped out of the limelight of Balmorhea to begin crafting an R&B influenced album, Slow Time, which was met with rave reviews. He’s already back with a brand new single for Western Vinyl, and you can stream the A-side of the release below. You’ll marvel at the power of his voice, and delight in the little guitar lines moving just beneath the front of the mix. To celebrate the release of the single, RG Lowe will be playing a ridiculously stacked bill over at Sahara Lounge. His labelmate Caroline Says will be playing, along with perennial ATH favorites Taft and Batty Jr. Plus, it’s an early show, so you can roll right over after that work happy hour; Doors open at 7:30, with music kicking off at 8. See you there!

Austin Show Spotlight: Dreamboat @ Sahara Lounge (Tonight!)

dreamboatA few weeks back, I watched something like 75 bands play in various spots across Austin, but only a few of the newer acts stuck; Dreamboat was one such band. They play this evening, bringing their energetic pop; it’s all hooks and all fun all the time. Plus, they’ll be joined by AMA, another one of my favorite local acts from Free Week. The show begins at 10 PM over at Sahara Lounge, also including Batty Jr/Ponyboy and the Horsegirls. Stream the great Strong Legs EP from Dreamboat below…memorize the songs so you can sing along at the top of your lungs.
