Last Week’s Jams (5.6 – 5.10)

What a wild and crazy week that was. Tons of music, and tons of great albums. We suggested you listen to the latest LPs from Lunchbox, Amy O, Gregor and Stephen’s Shore, among others…so go back and revisit those records if you’re into full-length listens. But, if not, some of our favorite acts popped up after a bit of an absence; there was new stuff from both Quivers and Emma Russack, so the Aussie contingent was representing with new music. This My Best Unbeaten Brother track that opens up the playlist is a ripper, but don’t you dare skip beyond new Yea-Ming or Cats of Transnistria. Just a bunch of great jams for you to enjoy, so just get right to it!

Baula Shares Heaven Knows

Swedish duo Baula have been working pretty hard to get folks into their new release Heavy Heart, No Tears. Personally, I’ve really dug the way they feel like a dark wave version of the Raveonettes; they carry the same cinematic nature in their presentation, while operating as a duo with driving guitar lines could also be apt areas of comparison. In this tune, Karolina’s got some angelic turns of tone throughout this song that take it from dreamy to almost fragile, and those slight turns added in this layer of tension that gets ridden out through the end of the tune. If you’re digging this style, you should definitely give their Heavy Heart, No Tears LP a listen today!

Last Week’s Jams (4.1 – 4.5)

New music comes hard and heavy during the Spring months, as its the perfect time to set up summer releases and tours. We tried to get to as much as we could, and grabbed 24 new songs for you to settle into on this Monday. New stuff from Austin’s Variety assures the band is still on the rise in my eyes. I’ve been really into the tunes from Bibi Club‘s new LP, and they throw a plot twist with some English sparkle on it; it matches up well with the dark wave from Houses of Heaven. Friends of the site like Gabriel Birnbaum, Kaspar and Snowy Band all had new work to share with the masses., plus be sure you taste the new Babehoven tune hanging out for you at the end. Press play for joy!

Baula Share Santa Fe Single

Swedish duo Baula popped into my listening rotation a few weeks back with the excellent “Mercury in Retrograde,” and now there’s another single to whet your appetite before they unleash Heavy Heart, No Tears. They’re an outfit that’s flirting with the darker underbelly of good pop songwriting; you can hear them flirting with melodic structures throughout this track, though it still has a smattering of noise. Growling guitars and thumping drum hits work in contrast to the sharp softness of the vocals; the chorus also utilizes a perfect set up before cymbals crash and guitar lines cut through the mix. Nice follow up, and I’m looking forward to the record, which drops on April 26th.

Baula Share Parasite Single

Baula popped up on my radar a few months ago with their single “Mercury in Retrograde,” and this new tune has them playing in familiar dark pop territory. There’s a forceful nature to this track, opening with this thunderous guitar line that carries massive power within it. They balance this dark brood with a serene vocal, carrying a bit of wistfulness that allows the song to reach for a perfect future amidst the cloudy background they’ve built up around it; their ability to balance the light and dark spots of their sound is what has made their songs so captivating. Their debut album Heavy Heart, No Tears will be out in April.

Baula Share Mercury in Retrograde

It’s Friday, and I feel like I needed a song that would be great for rolling the windows down and going for a drive, and this jam from Sweden’s Baula is absolutely perfect. It instantly hits you with this growling rhythm section, rushing you right into the song’s center, where the curtain’s pulled back to offer up a little sugary treat for you to devour. Swirling about, the vocals billow through your speakers, all the while the drums continue their thumping pulse from the background; you’re going to find yourself locked right into the groove, unable to pull away from the infectious nature they’ve captured…and ultimately, you’ll press play because nothing says “windows down” like this hit!
