Being Dead Announce Eels

When Horses Would Run hasn’t even been out one year, yet Being Dead is ready to return with a brand new batch of tunes to bang out across America. Having watched the band for years (and maybe putting out a 7″), the first 45 seconds or so completely encapsulates why they’re so endearing; they pummel your ears with these huge riffs, yet while you rock, you’re completely caught off-guard by their ability to seamlessly blend in hook after hook after hook…just listen to the directional change at 52 second mark. They continue with their non-linear songwriting, moving in a more melodic folk group direction around the 1:02 mark, before soaring through those distorted metal riffs as cymbals shatter in the distance. It all melds into this slow draw that closes, giving the listener a moment to absorb and reflect. But, if you’re catching them live, as you’ll be able to this Fall, they won’t give you that rest, as they’ll be bounding off into another song before you can catch your breath. Look for Eels via Bayonet on September 27th.

Beach Fossils Release Seconds

With a little under a month to go, we’re about halfway through the new Beach Fossils record, as far as singles go. Today comes one of my favorites from Bunny, holding tight to where the band first caught my ears long ago, but with a more modern charm, as I’ve hinted at previously. There’s something in this that feels like it’s jangling pop, though worked through the lens of an act like Papercuts (who’ve always felt jangle adjacent); there’s this sharpness combined with this pastoral calm, all of it coming to a head when the snare hits snap and the “ahh” vocal soars. It’s really hard to dislike anything from this band at the moment; Bunny drops on June 2nd via Bayonet.

Listen to Smut’s Power Fantasy EP

Having already shared Smut‘s pop rock hit “Fan Age,” I wanted to make sure you got a chance to listen to the whole of the band’s new EP, which just dropped on Friday via Bayonet. If you didn’t check out my original piece, I called “Fan Age,” the EP opener, a perfect blend of the Beths and Best Coast; it offers up a soft meandering dream in the fist 1.5 minutes before dropping the pop rock hooks that keep your attention. “Power Fantasy” revels in that dreamier world, sparkling with these melodic vocals that cut through the dancing/jangling guitar chords and shimmering cymbal work. They close the EP with a piece of down-trodden pop, again building the tension until distorted guitars craft this noisy wall in a delightful chorus. Fans of the dream-pop, shoegaze genre will find a nice home here; it reminds me a lot of Seablite in certain ways too! Grab the Power Fantasy 7″!

Kevin Krauter Shares Pretty Boy

I really enjoyed last year’s Toss Up from Kevin Krauter, so I’m looking for him to keep the pace with this new follow-up single. It’s almost as if he’s afraid of his voice here, scared he might frighten himself, so he turns his tones towards an overwhelming gentleness. This suits the track perfectly, giving room for the guitar to sort of rise and fall and rise and fall, all the while ensnaring the vocals in their own trap. In the end, it’s you the listener that is likely to fall for the trap, ensnared in the song’s natural hypnotic state. Quite a nice return, if I must say.
