We’re drawing towards the end of the year, and while that means arbitrary musical lists of things, what it also means is that we’ve got a few more records hanging out to enjoy before the year is up. Personally, there were some great new songs from trauma ray, EggS and the Wickies, which indicated that these acts have a lot of promise to deliver. Best Bets dropped their latest LP, which was on our radar, not to mention the new release from Being Dead and Feeling Figures. Loved the introduction to Coldwave, and it never hurts to wrap up the end of the week with new music from Constant Follower!

One of the great records I’ve been listening to over the last few weeks is officially out today, and you’ve got to just crank this one up to the max. Best Bets have delivered perhaps “the” hit power-pop record this year, delivering on the promise they delivered with On An Unhistoric Night. They added songwriting credits this go round from band member Joe Sampson (Salad Boys) and he’s infused this immediacy that blasts the hooks into your face the instant you press play. Seriously, if you do anything today, just listen to this record and revel in the pure joy you feel as you continue to turn that knob up to feel the power. The Hollow Husk of Feeling can’t get here soon enough, but with the new Best Bets records still a few weeks away, they’ve offered up one more sneak peek into one of my most anticipated LPs of the Fall. The energy of this tune totally fits where I’m at this afternoon, kicking out some high-octane power-pop while the vocals are being stretched to the max. Again, not sure of the album as a whole, but it feels like they’re touching the highest peaks of the genre, flirting with edges of punk while adhering to a sensible melodic approach you can’t ignore. Make sure you grab a copy from Meritorio Records before the release date on September 27th.

I reckon we have a few more months of solid hits before the world settles into Year End Lists or what not, and while I may be swamped, I’m really enjoying the great music that just keeps pumping out. This week we had all sort of old favorites and new, with our pals in Humdrum announcing a new LP, while other reliables like APTBS were doing their thing. Really got into the new stuff from Weak Signal and Mo Dotti, not to mention that lovely track from Little Oso. And then, we were able to close out the week with Jim Nothing and Dancer dropping fresh songs? Yeah, just out here crushing it!

We were ecstatic when we got news that there was a new record on the way from Best Bets this year; the first single was reminiscent of new member Joe’s work in Salad Boys, but this one dives full on into blissed out pop rock. You’ll hear two distinctive guitar lines riding through, one creating this curtain of distortion while the other kicks off in the front of the mix, dancing a little jangling jig. There’s a cooled earnestness on the vocals, almost feeling like you’ve got al little hope left for you in the world. The Hollow Husk of Feeling will pleasantly fall into our laps on September 27th via Meritorio Records.

What a great Friday! New I Was a King, and now we’re on board with new Best Bets, a band offering a similar yet distinctive brand of power-pop. If you crank this up, you’ll hear one difference (if you’re comparing and contrasting) in the volume; the New Zealand act are punching up with a slightly more aggressive bit of ripping. Still, you’ll likely hear some familiarity in the craft as Joe Sampson gets the songwriting credit this go round; you may know him from fellow New Zealand act Salad Boys, and that serves as a great reminder of his power pop pedigree. If all the tracks on the new album, The Hollow Husk of Feeling, are as solid as this one, we’re in for one of the best records of the year; it drops on September 27th via Meritorio Records.

There were some great new tunes last week, and I certainly can’t get enough of some of the LPs that dropped, which we pointed you towards on Friday. The Dehd track that hit last week is for sure one of their best of late, but I’m still really partial to jamming to that Guy Capecelatro III album. Some intriguing tunes from the likes of Maria Chiara Argiro, Team Play and Rose Mercie make a nice appearance in this weeks track-listing, plus there’s a bunch of other tunes to get you started on Monday morning.

Here we are folks, another Monday. We’re starting off the week, as we always do, looking back at last week’s hits, just in case our five followers missed a song or two. We’ve got new indie pop stuff from Red Sleeping Beauty and Jeanines, plus new tunes from long-time ATH faves, Stephen’s Shore. If you’re feeling, like me, a bit overwhelmed on this Friday, and just want a minute to turn up the noise and bang your head a little, then hit up this new track from New Zealand’s Best Bets. It’s a rocking from the get go, hitting with heavy riffs and guitar noodling after the band count it off at the start. The vocals definitely are filled with passion, almost sounding exasperated in their tone, but with just enough melody in the tone to make it feel like a solid bit of pop songwriting. Earnest and loud, which makes for great guitar pop all around. Grab On An Unhistoric Night from Meritorio Records.
