I have a confession to make. I asked to go to this show to shoot Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. I was really more excited to see Chad Valley. That said, I ended up being quite impressed with the Dale Jr. Jr. on the eve of their big Daytona 500 win. How did they get there in time? Jr.

There was a rabid crowd that showed up early to reserve a spot to dance in the more personal small venue version of Emo’s, thankfully now divided by a proper curtain bisecting the room at the soundboard to tighten up the sound a bit versus the camouflage net previously used.

Show Pics: Young Girls EP @ Lambert’s (2/20)

Pretty straight forward night of jams to celebrate the launch of the Young Girls EP. We got a little silly, we listened to some music, we watched the Rockets lose. Nathan was happy about that, Pete was not.

As the big bonus, we got to hang out with ATH old friends like Shivery Shakes and more recent friends like Reservations. I’ll just let everyone know now that it was a dream local lineup for Team ATH and we were there to the bitter end shimmying despite duties as assigned in the morning.

We were all fearing the worst, with the impending doom of a second ice-capade invading the city of Austin on the certain horizon. But, like most great cities with great people, we donned our heavy coats, scarves and beanies, making our way to Red 7 for a great evening of music.

The Best Gallery Of The Year

I had a fun year.

I took a lot of photos. I met a lot of artists. I took some portraits. I got jumpshots. I found the interesting people in the crowd, friends and strangers alike. I rejected releases and used my cell phone (looking at you Adam Ant). I went to festivals and went elbow to elbow with besties, frenemies and national media to get you the goods. I got to shoot The Cure and New Order. I saw new great bands breaking out and great bands before breaking up. I took pics of bands for which Nathan released records. I had a fun year.

Show Review: Brazos @ Holy Mountain (12.12)

There were a multitude of reasons to attend the show on Wednesday night over at Holy Mountain. You could go for the return of Brazos. Or the rising star of Jess Williamson. Or, the Top 50 worthy Ski Lodge.

FFF8 In Pictures – Saturday Edition

Saturday featured legends and legendary performances, though usually not at the same time. Johnny Jewel gets best performance of the day with double duty killer jams from Chromatics and a manic dance party with Glass Candy. MIA eludes me. I just don’t get it, but okay, the kids like to here abbreviated beats up and down. Ice-T let Bushwick Bill freestyle. Deerhunter had the most epic sound check ever, reconstructing “Marquee Moon” to test the levels.

Show Review: Laura Marling @ Central Presbyterian (11.6)

The last place I expected to find myself on a Wednesday night was in church, but I had good reason to be there: Laura Marling. The unique songwriter was holing up at the Central Presbyterian Church for the night, and the acoustics alone guaranteed great sound, so we had to be there (I didn’t burn!).

I’ll be honest right here. I went to catch Desaparecidos out of nostalgia, which I think was probably the case for a lot of people. When I left, however, I felt something different. Aside from my ears ringing, I sort of felt bad.
