EZTV Sign with Captured Tracks

ezWhen Captured Tracks signs a new act, I generally take notice as they’ve become one of my favorite labels to follow.  So, when they announced that they had grabbed EZTV for a new 7″, I immediately pressed play and fell in love.  For some reason, the guitar work sounds rather reminiscent of Television; it’s crisp and angular, then filled in by some really soft vocal tones.  This is a sound that’s rather fond to my heart, offering just enough rock n’ roll with classic pop ballad nods.  The label will release the band’s Dust in the Sky 7″ on April 28th, and let’s hope we hear even more from them in the future.

Show Pics: Craft Spells @ Red7 (3/3)

Craft SpellsTuesday night had a couple of shows and this time around, we made the tough choice to go with the touring acts hitting Red7 over a sweet local show at Cheer Up. We know it is overwhelming right now, trying to think about waht bands to see with SxSW just around the corner.

Craft Spells brought along an ATH favorite The Bilinda Butchers; call it a Captured Tracks mini-showcase. Locals Whiite Walls opened the night. I ended up shooting in black and white just for fun.

Hope you enjoy. Click through for more thoughts and plenty of pics…

Show Preview: Craft Spells @ Red 7 (3.3)

Craft-SpellsThere’s always a lull right before SXSW, so you’ve got to grab onto the great shows while you’ve got the time.  Tuesday night offers the dream pop of Craft Spells, and you’re really going to want to be in attendance for this gig. The band have capitalized on two great albums, Idle Labor and Nausea, both on Captured Tracks; they’ve built a name for themselves on creating music that will entrance you, erasing everything around you so that you’re lost in their work.  Personally, I’m also really excited to see openers The Bilinda Butchers who I’ve been onto for years, and locals Whiite Walls.  It’s going to be a beautiful night of tunes, so join me at the show, won’t you?

Here’s song from Craft Spells and Bilinda Butchers. Tickets are $12; you can buy them HERE.

I Love You But I’ve Chosen Juan Wauters

juanHow many more times can I tell the world about Juan Wauters? He just announced a new album, including this great new single, which has already won me over.  And, it doesn’t hurt that a few of the “press” folks have been given access to the same song in Spanish; it’s just as great.  Based on this track, his poetic nuances continue, and I like the distinctive quality in his voice…there’s nothing that sounds quite like Juan.  His new effort is titled Who Me and will be released by Captured Tracks on May 12th.

Stoked on This Reissue of the Apartments

apartamentoMy hat goes off to Captured Tracks; they do a great job with their new acts, but they really go for my heart with their reissues.  Earlier this year they tossed out a Stockholm Monsters reissue I quickly picked up, but now they’re prepping this one for The Apartments.  The on-again off-again project of Peter Walsh.  It’s a good representation of what was going on musically in Australia in the late 70s/early 80s, as Walsh had his hand various projects. Aside from the distinctive vocal delivery, I love the guitar sound on these tracks…usually built around an acoustic guitar.  The reissue is titled the evening visits…and stays for years, and it’ll be released on March 31st.

Enjoy This New Nic Hessler Tune

unnamed-4A few weeks ago I hit up a Nic Hessler tune, and I wasn’t entirely sold on it.  That’s until I got hooked on this new single, which made me realize how great Nic’s work could potentially be going forward.  It’s an example of perfect recording, starting the song off a bit slow, then waiting to explode in this huge swell of pop magic.  It’s surprising that more music ins’t being crafted in precisely this manner; it seems so simple (though I’m sure it’s not) and so easy, yet that’s precisely why I give Hessler credit, as I don’t think everyone can perfect it in such a manner. Look for Soft Connections in stories on March 17th via Captured Tracks.

This Nic Hessler Tune is Pretty

nohomoThere’s this really soft quality to Nic Hessler.  There’s twinkling guitars walking back and forth, meeting up with Hessler’s distinct voice.  But, it’s also a pretty awesome power ballad.  Despite the song’s ability to sound flowery, it’s got these little touches to it that make the tune seem like it could be a great stomper live: cascading guitars, solos, banging drum parts.  I love when a band can bring something totally different to the live stage, so I’m excited to see what comes from Nic when his debut album, Soft Connections is released. Look for it on March 17th via Captured Tracks.

Musical Poetry from Juan Wauters and Carmelle

11183_JKTHey. You. Do you have 13 minutes? Want to listen to some of the better lyricists in the indie realm? Well, then it’s best if you spend some time with the new EP from Juan Wauters and Carmelle. Juan released an excellent album last year, but it seemed drastically overlooked, so I hope people start to take notice of his work.  He’s working with his friend Carmelle for this great one track EP, with lyrical potency at the forefront. The music’s carefully done, but sitting in the background for the entirety.  You can grab the Wearing Leather Wearing Fur EP from Captured Tracks, or stream its brilliance below.

Let’s Dance With Pale Blue

mikesThe music of Mike Simonetti most likely has followers due to his work with Johnny Jewel and the duo’s After Dark project, but he’s since stepped away from Italians Do It Better to being a new project under the moniker Pale Blue.  The tune below still draws from the dance floor, and it’s exuberance during the latter half definitely draws me into the song.  His new project will release the album, The Past We Leave Behind, via his new label 2MR and Captured Tracks, so be on the lookout for it in April…for now, just dance.

New Track From The Soft Moon

15408a93-08d7-4e3f-b05b-2dc72648dac4Our friends at Captured Tracks sent over news of The Soft Moon‘s latest album. The album is called Deeper and will be released March 31st. Along with this news comes a stream of the lead single called “Black”. Way too soon. I have to wait four months? I broke my SxSW rule of not seeing a band twice with these guys (erm, guy in that the band is actually Luis Vasquez).

Deeper is the product of isolationism in a new country and if this lead track signifies anything, it may be the best yet. Dark, sparse but huge, bottled aggression…
