Nothing Natural Return with Cold Star LP

We were on board last year when Nothing Natural unleashed their NN EP, and now that they’ve got a full length ready to rock, I’m definitely ready for the band to unleash hooks and heavy noise right into my ear canal. You’ll notice they punch right away, almost like they’re brandishing walls of guitars borrowed from late 90s alt rock acts. They turn those big chords into hooks, however, letting the listener dive deep into the cool waters of booming power rock. Such a powerful statement that hopefully has you considering more from the band; they release Cold Star on October 18th via Cherub Dream.

Pocket Full of Crumbs Drop In My Hands I Hold a Lucky Cricket

Another week and another great track from San Francisco and Cherub Dream Records. First, I’d like to applaud CDR for dropping releases on old school Tuesdays; I hate Friday drop dates for albums. Now…the below song from Pocket Full of Crumbs offers the perfect blend of slacker ethos and grungy vibes that rattle the speakers upon pressing play, which is a lot of what you’re going to expect when you press play on In My Hands I Hold a Lucky Cricket. Those of us inclined to love crashing discord will certainly hear the appeal, while the vocals settle you down; it’s like a scene where the vocals are the kid on the couch while the rest of the world swirls and moves in double speed around them. Loving this jam, so crank it up and stream the whole LP.

Stream Flooded, the New EP from Parallel

We’ve tried to hip you to Parallel recently, and today you can finally stream the entirety of their new Flooded EP, which is the second release we’re covering from Cherub Dream Records (it’s a co-release with Play Alone) plthis week. Initially we recommended “Painkiller,” but as the whole EP is now available I think I’m also in love with opener “Death or Oblivion,” which forced me to evaluate my own listening habits, as they use this track to build up the sound for well over a minute before offering any vocal morsels. Pulling back on the immediacy, the band encourages you to absorb the whole of their songs, not just the most exciting moments, ultimately making their whole EP feel like a full-length listening experience. Welcome Strawberry and Quinine Split 7″

ATH fans are likely aware of Welcome Strawberry, and as followers of the group, we just got turned onto Quinine as well, with the groups announcing a split 7″ today…and both tunes streaming below! Both songs rely heavily upon brash noise in the front of the mix, with Welcome Strawberry centering their track around a softened vocal feel; Quinine allow their voices to kind of hang on the shadowier edges, though the second vocalist takes on a bit more of a modern emo approach. I love how on both songs the chorus sets you up for an energy push, illustrating why the two were perfect for a split release together! You can grab the 7″ from Cherub Dream Records!

Pocket Full of Crumbs Share In My Home

While I’d love to pigeonhole the entire scene from San Francisco, you clearly can’t define a town by its largest exports, as shows by Pocket Full of Crumbs. Rather than offer up the dreamy nature that’s been a scene highlight, they’re bringing in something that feels a bit more menacing, running with these growling guitars that are reminiscent of the earliest Sonic Youth or Dinosaur Jr LPs. I suppose if you listen to the set up, there’s still an abstract dreaminess that runs through, guided by the velvety vocal notes that run right through. This track appears on In My Hand I Hold a Lucky Cricket, out July 16th via Cherub Dream Records.

Parallel Share Blister Video

There’s such an incredibly vibrant scene going on in Oakland these days, and I’d love to add Parallel to that list, especially now that they’ve officially announced Flooded. There’s certainly a familiarity in the sound, with ringing guitars introducing a melodic element; it’s bright and crisp, despite darker intentions hanging about. Soft vocals accompany the sound, like a a voice from the past just whispering through, light and airy; the heavier vocal creeps in during the verse, building in this bit of inner turmoil, taking the song into the shadowy realms. At times, you can hear similarities to shoegaze and the like, but it’s almost as if the band’s not entirely convinced there, choosing instead to make it entirely their own sound, with genre nods merely there as a foundation. The band are slated to release Flooded on July 10th via Play Alone and Cherub Dream.

 

Christina’s Trip Share Companion

This churning bit of guitar pop from Christina’s Trip has totally won me over, and thus, warranted an early morning listen for you all. You’ll clearly hear a bit of nostalgia in the craft, something that clings to a sense of sincerity and indifference at once, particularly in the varying vocal approaches throughout the tune. I definitely fell for the sharp meandering of the guitar notes to, especially when they bent and twist around the drawn out style vocals. Bits of this sounds like early Rilo Kiley too, like that all encompassing earnestness that makes you want to get up, grab a guitar and start your own band. This song features on the group’s new LP, Forever After, out soon via Cherub Dream Records.

Sucker Drop Seein’ God EP

You’ve really got to check out the new EP from Sucker; it dropped today courtesy of Cherub Dream Records, and though its brief, I can’t say enough positive things about it. In my ear, the band feels like they’re spinning the modern infatuation with noise and discord around demos from the Halo Benders. There’s this definite penchant for smashing guitar work, like on tunes such as “Drop,” but the vocals come across as unsettling, sort of making you tune your ears into the sound, drawing you deeper into the natural emotion of the work. When you get to “Lackluster,” it’s anything but, turning this mess of cacophony into a piece that’s dripping with natural beauty. Go give Seein’ God a listen right now!

Welcome Strawberry Share New Single

When Welcome Strawberry sprang onto the scene last year, they were blasting us with the perfect balance between noisy bits and tasty melodic morsels. They’ve got a new Scared to Look EP coming out Friday, and for this tune below, they’ve mostly pulled the noise away to reveal a warm blankety of meditative melody. The entirety of this track falls in love with this dreamy guitar line that works over a thump that’s merely meant to keep the pace. Sprinkles of ambience shimmer in the far off distance, but they always seem intent upon staying out of the way of the vocals, so the song’s more pop-centric. New EP is out Friday via Cherub Dream Records.

Softie Share Gauzy Single

I have no idea whether anyone has coined the term fog-gaze or not, but I feel like Oakland’s Softie would certainly encompass the moniker, if we were to use it. For me, the sound has this weighted mass that just creeps through the speakers and into the corners of your room as you listen. All the vocals feel like ghostly whispers, like echoes from a distance you can’t quite make out as you fall under the spell of the warbling melody riding through your speakers. Definitely a sound that should have you listening in really closely, and with fingers crossed, we’re hoping we’ll get a new EP. Track brought to you courtesy of Cherub Dream Records.
