Last Week’s Jams (5.29 – 6.2)

Felt like we covered a whole lot of territory last week, which was mostly me just working super hard to keep myself occupied over summer vacation. There were so many great songs that I felt people overlooked in the big indie world, such as the new stuff from Wireheads and Big Blood. Or maybe you can go on with the old dependable from Balmorhea, the Clienteleor High Water Marks. Going back through, definitely appreciating stuff like the Sheeps track and the Chopper tune too, so you’ve got plenty to be excited about when you burn through this playlist. Get on it.

Chopper Drop Touch Video

My brain is running amok today, leaving me musically all over the place. So why not work this new dance track from Denmark’s Chopper into the mix? Jonatan Magnussen is working towards the release of Shockpop Vol. 1, and you can hear him pushing his sound with a little vocal help from singer Ama May. There’s something nostalgic in this sound, like old school club bangers, getting you all worked up and sweaty on the dancefloor. May’s performance has this little bit of coyness, like a secret wink between the listener. It’s just a freeing little dance-pop number to kind of get your spirits up in the middle of the day.

Kiwi Jr Drop Night Vision Single

Kiwi Jr have a slew of really great records under their belt, so it’s no surprise they’ve got the support of Sub Pop. I spent a lot of time with both Football Money and Cooler Returns, so I’ve got high expectations for the forthcoming Chopper LP. This new tune sees the band kind of branching into this warm pop territory; it reminds me a lot of the last Strokes record (which I don’t mind); I think the fading vocal in the chorus hits just the right notes. It’ll be interesting to hear the whole of the record, as it seems like the band have less of a Pavement nod and a bit more polish this go round…still, a good jam is a good jam, and this is certainly one of those. Chopper is out August 12th.
