Last Week’s Jams (12.11 – 12.15)

Unfortunately, this is probably the last of Last Week’s Jams for 2023. Not because I don’t want to write about new tunes, but because, for some reason, folks just stop putting out music and let the world dwindle to a compilation of year-end lists. But, last week we still had tons of tunes to cover, with a whole lot of Austin represented. We revisited Fantastic Purple Spots, plus had brand new stuff from Big Bill, the Infinites and Fading Yellow. Got a bonus with one more Maureens track, which might be my favorite on their latest LP, and a fresh Club 8 hit that came out of nowhere. If you’re pressing play, you can’t tell me that the song doesn’t immediately get stuck in your head! Club 8 open their latest single with a thumping single, tossing you into a toe-tapping frizzy as that infectious groove locks you into good times. Of course, the band always play with catchy notes while fusing it with really warm melody, and they do that here, with both singers trading verses back and forth with one another to charming effect. There’s no word as of yet about a new album, but hints of a slew of singles coming our way in the new year, so we’ve all got that to hang our hopes atop.

The Legends Return with Loser

Johan Angergard’s a seasoned hitmaker, playing roles in Club 8 and Acid House Kings, but it’s his Legends project we’re hear to listen to right now…and it might be my personal favorite project of his. This latest single immediately grabs you with this snappy little snare bounce, giving your leg that uncontrollable need to go up and down with the beat. In the guitars you’ll find the driving rhythmic nature that makes a good pop song, though its careful to hide beneath the vocals, only popping up in between to display the musicianship. Vocals, as you expect from Johan, are drenched in sugar, with duties shared with Club 8 bandmate Karolina Komstedt. Can’t wait to hear a new LP!

The Legends Share For Love Single

Johan Andergard has his hands in a lot of the great Swedish pop music I adore, from Acid House Kings to Club 8, but his solo work as the Legends always seems to always find the perfect home in my heart. This song, with an admitted study of the Field Mice, feels like is got this splendid gallop to it, like riding your horse through some sun-filled valley with flowered rolling hills. There’s just something about the vocals that lift your spirits, allowing you to peak in step with the tune itself, and a subtle backing vocal mixed in behind the front of the mix, furthering the song’s natural charm. Johan’s working on tons of tunes for 2022, so hopefully we’ll hear more soon!

Playful Pop Number from Club 8

I couldn’t imagine a better way for you kick off week than with this brand new single from Sweden’s Club 8. I honestly can’s stop pressing play on this one; it reminds me a lot of Chairlift’s “Bruises” in a certain sense, but still feels slightly refreshing. That’s entirely due to the interchange of the male/female vocal roles, and perhaps the more subtle organic feel of the song. You never really know what you’re going to get when this lot drop a release, but I do know one thing’s for sure…if you press play, you’re going to be wishing you could listen to this song for the rest of the day. Bet.

Another New Club 8 Tune

Swedish group Club 8 are forever shapeshifting, though always revolving somewhere in the realm of great pop music. Their latest single is no different, featuring this heavy groove in background while the vocals sort of ride the natural wave of the song’s melody. There’s a slight lift in the vocals during the chorus, soaring just a note or two higher, empowered by the increased tempo of the beat. It’s a short number, and maybe I would have liked another thirty seconds or another chorus, but if you listen below you’ll see what’s before you is more than enough to capture your attention.

Club 8 Return with New Music

It’s been just over a year since Club 8 released Golden Islands for Labrador, but amidst the release, they begin to work on a batch of songs they hoped would end up as a double album of sorts. We now get a first listen, and while it definitely plays into the hands of the band’s pop history, this furthers the band’s experimentation with its usage of space and lush arrangements. The vocals are so careful, you sort of get that sensation of weightlessness, feeling your body sort of release and float off into clouds…at least that’s what I hope it feels like…unless you’re Marge Dursley. For now, we wait for future news, but in this glorious fashion, lets just get ourselves lost.

Pulsing Electro Pop from Club 8

For some reason, and perhaps this is all on me, but I always thought of Club 8 as a purely indiepop hit machine. Sure, they stretched the form a bit, but from what we’ve heard off their 10th album, it looks like they’re really emphasizing the club punch on this go round. This jam has this throbbing pulse, kicked up by these electronic punches. Interestingly, the notes coincide with the breathy vocal delivery, matching note for note. It’s the sort of tune where you expect to sort of lose yourself within the confines of a fog filled club, lost in the beat of song; the chorus is pretty special too. Fire will be released January 26th via Labrador.

Club 8 Share Single from Golden Island

While we’ve covered Club 8 quite a bit during our tenure, I feel like we’ve really taken the Swedish outfit for granted; they’ve recently announced Golden Island, which will be their 10th LP. Perhaps even more impressive than their long career is this new tune; it’s a very purposeful piece of pop music. The first 40 seconds or so are pretty sparse, dominated by what can only be described as a deep pulse. In the vocals, you almost have them used as an instrument, despite their polished beauty…especially when the sampled vocal enters the picture. It’s hard not to appreciate a band that continues to involve, and in such an emphatic fashion; look for the new LP on January 26th via Labrador Records.

New Club 8 Hit

Not only are we Labrador Records fans, but we’re also huge fans of Club 8. They just dropped this darkened electronic gem to announce their brand new album Golden Island. For the most part, this number takes on more of an atmospheric vibe than the band has presented before, with the vocals coming across almost as carefully exerted breaths in the front of the mix. The song’s construction and minimalism illustrate that the group can work on varying levels, not just hitting you over the head infectious pop; this is pop music for those that think. Look for the new record in early 2018!
