Weary of getting to lost in the wash of morning pop vibes, the Wind-Ups just dropped their newest video, and it offers a different side of pop music. It’s a gritty number on the surface, but lurking beneath is the sense of playfulness that the group manage to capture on the recoding of their most recent LP, Confection. Chanting at first, they use a not to Laverne and Shirley to kick off the noisy wash of grooves that suck you immediately into their exuberance; it’s like a call and response of sorts, with a willingness to just have some fun while you’re cranking out the volume. I have been cranking the Wind-Ups new stuff pretty consistently, with each hit scratching a different little itch. Their latest sing is a bit grimier, almost in a sort of Misfits meets the Spits sort of way; it’s got a buzzing that’s consistent and forceful, pushing your speakers to the max as you turn the volume up. Still, what’s great about the group is their ability to work both heavier edges and melodic pop moments into what they’re doing; this is what has me enthralled as we proceed towards the release of their new LP, as it seems no sound is wrong on this record. Confection is out next Friday via Dandy Boy Records.

If you need your hair blown back today, might I suggest you try on this fresh track from the Wind-Ups? It begins with a spoken sample and a growling gurgle of guitar beneath the surface; the marching tone sets the tune afloat, letting you kind of bounce your body in step with each snap of the snare. But, at 40 seconds, they jump down on the pedals, erupting with this huge wash of noise and volume, driving home both an adoration of noise and pop hooks. You’ve got to stick around too for a little while, as they’re expertly throwing plot twists into their songwriting, like the hook-laden section just after the 2 minute mark. The water in Oakland must be tasting might fine right about now; you’ve got two powerhouse labels like Slumberland and Dandy Boy just dropping hit after hit…and today is no difference with a new tune from The Wind Ups. It’s the perfect track to crank as you march out the door for a day full of ass-kicking; it employs a scuzzy wall of noise on the surface, but it’s the special hooks living beneath the surface that make the track an ultimate joy. The stomping drum kit and tambourine shaking almost make you feel like its all about to fall apart, only to get dragged back together with the infectious vocals and pure pop sensibility.
