I felt like I had to make up for missing out on some key hits the prior week, so I doubled down and the team and I brought you 27 brand new tunes. BGray was in love with the new Nations of Language, who he also caught up at the Kilby Block Party. Me?? Well, I fell in love with the women in the music scene, even getting into some new voices like Star Moles who I hadn’t been acquainted with before new singles hit me. Old ATH faves the Mary Onettes returned with a new single, so that was nice to hear…plus a new Pot Pot record is on its way via Felte. Oh…and did anyone write a better song than the opener from the Jeanines on this playlist? Indulge my friends.

Cory Hanson Loves Lou Reed

While we have all grown accustomed to Cory Hanson‘s work in Wand, I feel like the masses generally sleep on his solo stuff; I can’t believe he’s already up to his 4th solo LP. This new single drops in an elegant bit of balladry, working with a piano backbone that allows for negative space to be filled with string arrangements and saxophone work. There’s also a bit of dry humor too, while Hanson brings up Lou’s quirkier traits, such as his role as a “tai chi master.” Throughout, there’s this solemn reverence that you can feel in each note on the piano and in the quieted fragility of Cory’s voice. Really looking forward to the entirety of I Love People; it drops July 25th via Drag City.

Cory Hanson spends the majority of his time kicking it in his band Wand, but he’s recently been working on the release of his solo effort, The Unborn Capitalist from Limbo. While there are hints of similarities to his main project, I think the orchestration in this new single demonstrates how much he’s elevated his sound. The utilization of strings provides the perfect balance to the way his voice creakily unfolds. Drag City will be unleashing the new album on November 11th, so you’ve got time to invest in Cory’s new project before making a decision.

SXSW Interview: Wand

SXSW is just around the corner, and while the beast seems to be laying somewhat dormant this year, I wanna make sure we keep you posted on what’s coming up, and who we’re excited to see. I sent some questions to Cory Hanson of Wand, who released Ganglion Reef last year, and are releasing Golem this Spring.
