Adult Share No One Is Coming

Let’s face it, the world is a shit show, and every day we’re waking to watch the Decline of Western Civilization, so we’ve go to turn to the artists, like Adult. The Detroit punks are issuing both a warning and a call to arms, set to a thumping bit of synth punk; it’s oddly danceable despite the messaging. The constant refrain of “no one is coming” serves as a reminder that we’ve got to start taking back the spaces that we value the most…be that political, or more importantly, local communities. All of this is weaved into a track that swirls with infectious noise, stomping in your ears as Nicola delivers her sermon to the masses. The group will release Kissing Luck Goodbye on March 27th via Dais.

Heavy Jam from Trauma Ray

I definitely spent a lot of time jamming to the debut LP from Trauma Ray; it was heavy in all the right spots, with the faintest hint of melody lurking to keep pop fans like myself enthused. Well, yesterday they dropped an EP announcement with this new single and it’s totally bringing me back to mid 90s shows at Liberty Lunch here in Austin. The heaviness of the riff work recalls a number of acts from that era, though the earlier Deftones LPs certainly come to mind. I think the way they flirt with soaring vocal melodies is reminiscent of Water and Solutions by Far, mastering heavy riffage with a huge set of pipes! Think the group’s new Carnival EP will be pretty solid, out February 20th via Dais Records.

Begging Dog Share Common Place

I have really been enjoying the jams from the forthcoming Begging Dog LP; there is something in the rhythm section and the buzz that works beneath that seems to nod towards Blank Dogs…on the production side at least. That buzz and pop keeps the track punching forward, but the draw is the way the vocals get delivered, hanging in this sort of cavernous fashion that feels like everything is echoing off the walls. Every time I listen I hear different influences, and the video provides another layer, with Jeff Kleinman stalking a stage much like Ross Farrar of Ceremony…or any other rad band you love. Demo 1 is out December 12th via Dais Records.

Dais Records Sign Begging Dog

There’s a pretty solid stable of creative horses over at Dais Records, and today they’ve announced that they’ve added to that, signing Begging Dog. The group is the working moniker of Jeff Kleinman of Choir Boy, and upon our first listen, he’s offering his own version of bedroom pop, a little bit traditional and a little bit unsettling. Musically, there’s a snapping beat and a light strum that keeps the energy high, setting up the slight melody of the chorus. But, what stood out to me is the way the vocals kind of dwell in more of that modern post-punk delivery, sitting deep in the mix and spoken as matter-of-fact, rather than sung, aside from a slight lift in that chorus. It’s a pivot on expectations, and with that, the project has my interest; the label will release Demo 1 on December 12th.

Trauma Ray Share Bardo Single

This new Trauma Ray record is going to get a lot of play at my house, and this new single sees them reaching back into my own early listening habits as a teenage, bringing back to the present. The track wastes no time in hammering you with noise, hurtling riffs right at you as they lock into a pseudo-metal thrash. Still, there’s something in their craft that reveals little melodic moments, sort of like the light shining under a door in a darkened hallway; it reminds me a lot of when Deftones switched to more melodic notes during White Pony, but were still able to bring the noise. They release Chameleon on October 25th via Dais.

When looking back at this year’s albums, trying to figure out what will wrap up the Best of the Year lists, I’m hoping that this new Trauma Ray LP ends up on a lot of lists. This new single builds quietly, creeping along in the shadows with this slowcore styling. Suddenly, it erupts and drops in this block of noise, billowing through your speakers, and with the appropriate volume, rattling the inside of your house. It’s both quiet and loud, and always moving and morphing, which I adore as a listener. You’re really going to want to grab a copy of Chameleon, out October 25th via Dais.

Don’t run when this new Trauma Ray song greets you with a huge wall of earth-shaking noise; it’s meant to be there, building in the perfect bit of contrast that will help make this track one of your favorites of the day. Once the noise subsides in the opening, you’ll fall into a feathered vocal that caresses your inner ear, albeit for just a brief moment. Those soft moments briefly pull you into the core, only for the discordant noise to rain down upon you time and time again, breaking things down slowly as it rocks you all the way to the close. A lot of love for this Texas outfit; they’ll drop their debut LP, Chameleon, on October 25th via Dais Records.

TR/ST Share Dark Day Single

As you’ve probably noticed over the last year, I’ve definitely been indulging more in the electronic side of the industry; it’s always been part of my listening, but maybe got pushed to the side as I was trying to keep up with the Joneses…and now who cares. So, here we are with a new bop from ATH faves TR/ST. Alfons distinctive delivery continues to hold me in its grasp, particularly as it gets manipulated in and out of his delivery. This tune’s build up until about the 1:26 mark before dropping into the club thump is just perfect, letting you get your feet under you before you dance off into the club’s shadows…which is my style as I’m mostly a soloist dancer. Performance will be out on September 13th via Dais.

Geneva Jacuzzi Drops Scene Ballerina Video

Dropping into my afternoon, and dropping into some pure nostalgia as we bump this new track from Geneva Jacuzzi. The lyrical content is all about that one person who always steps up to steal the spotlight, take the attention…and probably ruin someone’s night. But, musically, its pure glitzy pop, straight out of the Madonna playbook. The beat matches up with the punctuated vocal delivery of the verse, then the tonal vocal change certainly feels like it channels the old-school approach. There’s even some spoken word layering beneath, which definitely feels Madge-esque. A fun tune as you dance about and get ready to grab a copy of Triple Fire, out August 23rd via Dais Records.

TR/ST Shares All At Once Single

Not sure where or when it was that I first caught TR/ST (who went by Trust at that time), but I do remember the inclination to let my body free itself and immerse myself in what was before me. Now, years down the road, I’m still devoted to the work of Robert Alfons, and I’m definitely excited there’s a new album coming our way, with the first single hanging out below. That freeing sentiment is definitely omnipresent in his work, like the propulsive beat here; you may commence air-punching and foot stomping in your room after craning the volume to an appropriate level. Alfons vocals are distinctive, like a darker version of Anhoni, but built for late night dance floors and shadowy corners. Performanceis out on September 23rd via Dais Records.
