Greg Mendez Shares Two New Singles

Perhaps it’s unfair to work Greg Mendez‘s name into the realm of Elliott Smith, but when you listen to these new tracks, you’re really going to find it hard to ignore the similarities, particularly on “Gentle Love.” Whether it’s the fragility in Greg’s voice or the lightness of the strum being brought into the mix, you’re going to find yourself wishing you were in a quiet listening space while Greg quietly offers his vision. “Frog” is a bit more of an experimental piece, almost like a little sampling of where Mendez’s brain was during the writing process; I hope that the frog has forgiven him. Beauty Land is out on May 29th via Dead Oceans.

A strong day for songwriters on the site, now with Greg Mendez announcing his new album, Beauty Land. I always tend to marvel at how impactful the work of Greg is, particularly when he delivers such emotion in a short span of time. I know it’s particularly unfair to Greg, but the way the recording highlights the fragility of his voice mixed in with the heavy strum of the strings on the guitar. There’s a little trickle of piano added in, with Mendez intent upon maximizing the emotional tug; he’s such a magician with these slight details he builds into his work. Beauty Land is his debut for Dead Oceans, and it hits on May 29th.

For all the post-punk resurgence that’s gone on, I stand by that I think Shame do it best. Their live shows were dripping with sweat and tension, but they’ve also adhered to a style that’s certainly an amalgam of indie rock sounds, making their records far more interesting. Here, it almost sounds like a kind of garage rock shimmy to kick off, sort of jittery and frantic, but run through an acoustic punch. I think that contrast between the kind of galloping guitar and the growl in the vocals is the perfect set up, but also one that is supremely rewarding. I’m all for being aggressive, but the way they balance the soft and heavy fits perfectly into my old man ears. Their new album Cutthroat drops on my kid’s birthday, September 5th, so double the reason to celebrate; it’s out via Dead Oceans, followed by a big North American tour in early 2026.

This is Greg Mendez‘s world, and we’re all just living in it, and gratefully so. Just recently he announced his singing to Dead Oceans, with plans of an EP and a Reissue of his S/T LP. Now, there’s a brand new single that completely breaks your heart, and there’s no way from avoiding it; you’re going to find yourself willingly driving head-on into this downpour of melodic emotion. Something about Greg’s voice just breaks you; you can hear it strain, while the strum of the strings reverberates in your speakers. That added vocal texture on the tune only deepens the appeal, making this new 7″ an absolute must have; it drops this Friday!

Last year was a huge year for Greg Mendez, as the singer finally seemed to received the accolades that have been circulating about his name for years. And, what better way to follow that up than by a signing with Dead Oceans, as he’s just announced today. While the song itself is fairly simple, mostly working with a keyboard and Greg’s vocals, there’s something about a careful listen that really unfolds in this magical way. You can hear the tape rolling, detailing this innocence that seems to come with Mendez’s craft, letting you know and think that you’re the only one he’s singing to, in the most special way. First Time/Alone EP is out on October 18th.

After returning in late 2023 with Everything Is Alive, it seems like the world’s been abuzz with Slowdive and their return to form. They’ve been touring throughout the US this past month on the back of all that success and praise, and those of us in Austin will finally get a chance to glimpse the quintet live when the roll into Moody Theater on Sunday. It’ll be interesting to see how far back they go…will the set be equal parts Creation Records and Dead Oceans or more weight given to the most recent albums? Either way, you get to enjoy a night with some of the most beautiful noise blowing through the Moody Theater. Opening up evening will be LA’s Drab Majesty. Marlon Williams Announces My Boy

I very vividly remember running with my iPod around 2018; I was listening to a bunch of stuff on random that I had downloaded from various PR folks. Marlon Williams “Beautiful Dress” came on, and I immediately stopped to see what on Earth was making that voice. I’ve been a fan ever since, so I’m looking forward to Marlon’s new LP, My Boy. The release promises a more playful Williams this go round, which you can hear in the style of this track, so it’ll be nice to hear him attached to something a bit different, though equally as moving…as you can see. Probably a redundant post on my end, as I keep talking up the new Shame record. Perhaps there just isn’t too much on the heavier side of things that I’ve been able to get into this year (Idles sounds like a shitty Hot Snakes/TxisR). So here comes Shame, building in the song with this anxious post-rock for the first minute before the vocals enter the fray; they stick to their own formula in bits, though the release here is tamped down on its first entry, and honestly, an afterthought for me. What I do love is the melodic venture the song takes around the 3 minute mark, almost charming listeners before starting to sputter into discord and noise. I am interested to know why a lot of the band’s videos feature the lot in motorized vehicles, but save that for another time. Check out “Snow Day,” an homage to the 2000 hit movie! The moment we’ve all been expecting has come to be; Shame, today, announce their brand new LP, Drunk Tank Pink. There have been hints that something was in the air since the release of Songs of Praise…but I’m actually referring to the musical style they’re brandishing on their latest batch of singles. They seem to have discarded the formulaic call and response post-punk that’s become quite the fad, instead favoring a more elaborate approach, often slowing things down to let notes ring out and build that internal tension for the listener. There’s still a solid release, but there’s time to reflect, rather than just be bashed over the head by blunt rock. Drunk Tank Pink will be released the day before my birthday on January 15th via Dead Oceans.
