Missed This Crepes Tune

The Melbourne scene continues to prove to be one of the more diverse, and prolific, music scenes across the globe…and rising act Crepes dropped a tune from their latest album that I completely missed. Their first single from Channel Four was an energetic number titled “Sexyland,” but they pull back on the rhythm here and let this gem just flow. Lyrics are delivered in the most casual manner, with the bass line the most prominent musical element in the mix…yet you’ll hear synth lines sparkling in the far off. You might also hear a brief nod to Phoenix in the vocal twist during the chorus…but that could just be us. Channel Four is being handled by Deaf Ambitions and Spunk, and is about to hit the streets!

Playful Summer Pop from Crepes

Australia is home to the great bands, and added to the mix recently is the work of Crepes. They’ve been relatively quiet since 2015, but here they are bouncing their way with this playful sun pop that recalls the hook-laden singles of Woods; it’s nostalgic, yet rooted in the present with the various layers of tinkering synths and vocals. This is the best sort of pop in the summer time, both warm and groovy, which continues to build my expectations for the band…they promise to have a full length LP coming our way real real soon.

New Video from Hollow Everdaze

Going to start off our day with a little love for our Oceanic brethren, kicking things off with this brand new video from Hollow Everdaze. I covered their earlier single, but this newest jam has a much more pop-centric vibe to it. The stop-motion vid locks into the band’s psychedelic tendencies, but you can’t deny that the snare snaps and the way the melodies are draped across this song that the band are anything other than a huge pop band in waiting. The group are set to release their new album, Cartoons, on June 23rd via Deaf Ambitions.

New Music from Hollow Everdaze

I’m a troller of labels, and Deaf Ambitions is one of those that I haunt, just waiting for them to toss me something delicious. They just upped this great hit from Hollow Everdaze. It’s an upbeat number, though it’s rooted in the leftover heaviness from modern psych. I love the little twists and turns in the tones on the vocals, with an almost tropical guitar jab cutting through. This song is constantly swelling, building an energy that demands you turn it up louder with each spin. Such a cool vibe, both psychedelic and summery. Look for the band’s new album Cartoons late this year from the label.

Another Track from Pure Moods

PURE_MOODS-BLooks like we’ll be spending some time over in Australia today, as we first ran a Lower Plenty track, and now we’re here with this Pure Moods hit. I’ve really taken to the band’s approach; they seem to take the pages from the Mac Demarco notebook and slow it all down…like the DJ Screw of indie rock. There’s a nice meandering bit of guitar jamming out right after the 2 minute mark, but even that has a subdued wash to it. To me, this is chillwave, but with instruments! Looking forward to the group’s debut self-titled album, out November 4th via Deaf Ambitions.

More New Redspencer Tunes

redspencerYou know I love a good bit of casual indiepop, which is precisely what Redspencer has been offering us since they announced their latest album. If you’re basing your expectations on the new single, then you can expect relaxing guitar chords with just enough sharpness to near a jangle. The tones are bright enough throughout to match the album’s art work, and the backing vocals definitely provide an added texture of warmth. Perks is high on my list for year ending releases, so please don’t avoid the great pop music these guys keep putting out; their album hits on November 18th via Deaf Ambitions.

Premiere: Redspencer Offer New Single

redspencerMelbourne’s Redspencer won me over with their debut EP, so I’m stoked that they’re getting ready to release a proper full-length. They’ve been kind enough to share with us this new single, which takes on the guitar-pop of their early work, but elevates it to the next level. The hooks are still present, and coolly float out, but I think there’s some bits of Blur‘s casualness in the way the lyrics are delivered. So, take some mid 90s Brit pop, add in some textural elements from Aussie guitar pop, and you have this gem of a tune. You’ll find this tune on the group’s debut LP, Perks, which is being released by the uber reliable Deaf Ambitions.

Meet Melbourne’s Pure Moods

PURE_MOODS-BHow quickly the Melbourne music makes its way over to our side of the pond, just like this Pure Moods track that’s blowing up rather quickly. There’s an interesting dynamic to the song, with the chiming guitars taking on more of a dream pop sensation while the vocals have that relaxed attitude that’s been popularized in the city over the past several years. As of now, the band’s in their early stage, just tossing this catchy piece in your ears while they head back into the studio to finish up work on their debut album for Deaf Ambitions.

Dream Pop from Zone Out

zoneoutIt looks like Deaf Ambitions are the newest hit-makers over in Melbourne, putting out some of our new favorites from Australia such as Cool Sounds (who I wrote about yesterday). Today, we’ve got this new Zone Out track from the label, which will be featured on the group’s upcoming album, Transience. This track is all about textures, melting beats and synth layers in order to create the backdrop for Ashley Bundang’s voice to do its thing. You’re going to find this song serving as the backdrop to the rest of your day; I just have that feeling for you. Look for the LP later this year.

More Dreamy Pop from Cool Sounds

coolsoundListening to this song all morning, and I can’t believe that the name Cool Sounds hasn’t already been chosen by someone. That being said, I think it’s a pretty easy way to get into the group; it’s a simple explanation of the band’s pop construction. On their latest single, you’ll hear a deepened dream-state just tinged slightly with some jangling guitar work. While I initially think there was some horn catching my ear, the only thing I ended up focusing on was the calming effect of the vocals. It’s good to see a pop band taking on some different vibes. This new single is stand-alone for the moment, but promises to be included on the group’s forthcoming LP for Deaf Ambitions.
