Last Week’s Jams (11.17 – 11.21)

Okay, okay. So we didn’t crush it this last week, but I still feel like if you’re looking for a pound for pound playlist of solid hits under an hour, our coverage is primo. We’ve got brand new stuff from We Are Joiners, featuring one of my favorite chorus moments of the last several months. Plus, if you haven’t heard Lola, which I hadn’t, you should fix that before it’s too late. Like me, maybe a subtle guitar pop tune from the New Tigers makes your week, or maybe you want to get swept away in the synth pop of Pet Owner. I’m not sure where to lead you, but I promise there are worst places to spend an hour of your Monday.

Diles Que No Me Maten Revisit Manos de Piedra

If you’ve been on board with Mexico’s Diles Que No Me Maten, the odds are you’ve either heard this song live, or you’ve heard it on their earliest album, Edificio (2020). But, as the band have grown both sonically and as humans, the song began to take a different shape, ending up in a different space than where it was before. So, as they’re currently working on a run in the US, it seems like the perfect time to circle back and rerecord the tune for new audiences. I was really drawn to the pronounced punctuation at the 2 minute mark from Jonas, before the song goes bleak and begins to space out into something like an accented piece of spoken word. Really love what this group is working on.

New Song from Diles Que No Me Maten

One of the disappointments of missing the last day of Levitation this year was that I didn’t get to see Diles Que No Me Maten, the Mexico City outfit who have just dropped this single from Mexican Summer‘s Sitting on the Moon compilation. There’s this sort of journeyman storytelling to their style here, accompanied by this subtle meandering of guitar notes and light percussion. They’ve incorporated some imagery from DF, celebrating the beauty of the city, tying it to the majesty of their songwriting. Totally enamored with their songwriting and storytelling; they’ll be hitting a brief tour on the West Coast, starting tomorrow.
