Last Week’s Jams (8.18 – 8.22)
We have to own up to riding the struggle bus last week; I’ve been back at school, but the kids were finally in my classroom, so didn’t quite get to as much of the jams as I normally would. But, even as I adapted a new routine, found some real joy in the week’s music, though I know there was tons more out there. We got some solid Austin love with fresh Jane Leo and Rad Gnar, encompassing both sides of the Austin area scene. RayRay crushed it with a premiere for new Living Hour track, so be sure to swing by that jam. Fans of my indiepop coverage will want to be be sure you get your ears on new Tullycraft, Love Burns and Massage, all worthy of some extra listens. Sneak in and enjoy a little dose of new jams. And B.gray threw out some news on the ACL Night Shows, if that’s of interest, dig into the site!

I’m kicking off a brand new school year today, and what better way to do so than by having my students walk into a room with jittering punk courtesy of Melbourne’s
It was a really strange week over on the music side of things; Tuesday blew up and we covered 10 brand new songs. But, then it’s like everything died and there were no new tunes. Alas, we managed to get into about 25 new jams, though one didn’t hit the DSPs, so we’ll have to have you play detective (or just go love Piggietails already). I got to meet some new bands this week, like Aussie’s Mana Pools, as well as My Generation, so be sure to keep an eye on both. Some diehard acts we love also came out with new tunes, such as Snooper‘s new album, Massage back in the fold and another Dancer hit from their forthcoming banger of an LP. Plus, the are is some ATX love from Nuclear Daisies and J’Cuuzi too! Get on it.
I felt like I had to make up for missing out on some key hits the prior week, so I doubled down and the team and I brought you 27 brand new tunes. BGray was in love with the new Nations of Language, who he also caught up at the Kilby Block Party. Me?? Well, I fell in love with the women in the music scene, even getting into some new voices like Star Moles who I hadn’t been acquainted with before new singles hit me. Old ATH faves the Mary Onettes returned with a new single, so that was nice to hear…plus a new Pot Pot record is on its way via Felte. Oh…and did anyone write a better song than the opener from the Jeanines on this playlist? Indulge my friends.
Last week started off with a smattering of great tunes, but I’ll admit to wearing out by week’s end…for some reason just felt like there wasn’t a whole lot out there tugging at me! We were really excited to share some great ATX stuff like the latest from Feeling Small and Johanna Heilman…with Alien Eyelid‘s great new single just a few hours away from our home base. Lots of acts we’ve been harping on had new singles, like Daisies, The Soft Walls; we also got a new single from one of our SXSW raves, Lifeguard. Oh, and we’re starting off with the Particles, as we’re over the moon they’re getting some reissue treatment from
Not too long ago we brought you the album announcement from
For some reason I felt like we were nursing a SXSW hangover, just a week later than normal. But, in all that, still found tons of great tunes to write about and share. Good to see personal faves like Lachlan Denton and Greg Mendez popping up (with that Greg tune getting tons of love), plus some videos from the likes of Low Praise and 7ebra gave us a chance to revisit some singles we’d been keeping an eye on. Also, some local love for Troller and Houston’s Alien Eyelid, so trying to keep it Texas ya’ll. Stream on!
