Last Week’s Jams (5.1 – 5.5)

Last week started off with a smattering of great tunes, but I’ll admit to wearing out by week’s end…for some reason just felt like there wasn’t a whole lot out there tugging at me! We were really excited to share some great ATX stuff like the latest from Feeling Small and Johanna Heilman…with Alien Eyelid‘s great new single just a few hours away from our home base. Lots of acts we’ve been harping on had new singles, like Daisies, The Soft Walls; we also got a new single from one of our SXSW raves, Lifeguard. Oh, and we’re starting off with the Particles, as we’re over the moon they’re getting some reissue treatment from Chapter Music.

Dreams on Tape Drop Tomorrow’s Unknown EP

I have been really enjoying the craft of Dreams on Tape over the last year or so, with singles slowly trickling out across the Internet. Today, Jake Benfant’s recording project drop their latest, Tomorrow’s Unknown EP, with the title track running below. When I first heard it, I really loved the wash over the vocals; the coating has this thickness that reminds me of Blank Dogs, yet doesn’t lose any of the melodic cornerstones. Musically, you can certainly hear the drenched electronics circling back and looking at the pop of the 80s, mixing the darkness with little blips of pop; it kind of reminds me of some of those bangers on the last Strokes record. Give it a listen.

Last Week’s Jams (12.12 – 12.16)

The end is near my friends, at least for 2022. We’ll likely be popping in and out over the holidays, but songs (and motivation) will be minimal, so don’t expect too much from us on our end. That said, we do have one last Last Week’s Jams to run for you, with a solid amount of hits. I left out all the Best Of lists…but do check out RayRay’s Best Songs and my Top 50 Albums, if you’re so inclined. I made sure to cover the new Galore EP and Fine. LP, plus we got lots of all around jams from the likes of Classic and Packs and more. Browse, listen to it all. Do you. See ya with more jams in 2023!

Dreams on Tape Share 1999 Single

Jake Benfant is still working on the finishing touches to Tomorrow’s Unknown, the new EP for his Dreams on Tape project, and with that, he’s given us another peek into what’s in store. This track feels a lot like its pulling from Julian Casablancas solo record, texturing these cavernous electronic pieces atop one another, letting the vocals hang heavily coated in the middle of it all. There’s this sort of heartbeat to the way the song pulses and moves up and down with those melodic vocals, giving the track this sort of dark pop lifeblood. Give it a listen while we wait on the new EP to finally get here!

Dreams On Tape Release Nostalgia

A wee bit ago, we were turned onto Florida’s Dreams On Tape, the bedroom project of Jake Benfant. Today sees the release of the Nostalgia EP, and I’d love to give some more hype to title track here. It’s a familiar pop sound, one that early fans of Wild Nothing will likely find super enjoyable, employing solid bouncing rhythms and a nice little dream meets jangle guitar line hanging out there in the wind. There’s a bit of longing in Jake’s vocals here, which ties into the concept of reflecting on the past and how we tend to see it with a sense of longing. Don’t you dare tell me that chorus isn’t a hit! Enjoy.

Dreams on Tape Share Home

Dreams on Tape is a new bedroom project coming out of Florida, and the mood of the latest single kind of fits in with my Friday vibe. It has that turning jangle in the guitar, but has that sort of breezy wistfulness, like you’re looking off into the horizon daydreaming about what’s next in your life. It’s all served up to you with these thickly coated vocals and a nice little subtle beat that steadies the song nicely. There’s just this natural feeling of hope here, which might be a great way to sort of close out 2020. Look for the Nostalgia EP real soon!
